I was'nt going to say "I told you so" ... but there it is. I don't think the show would be getting bashed half as bad if they were'nt going to try and profit from what they find.
Another bad idea in the long history of bad ideas ....
I don't care for archaeoligists ... but this show and the others out there are going to have an absolute negative effect on our hobby in the near future.

These two shows and their participants are selling out (and profiting) ... at the expense of every other detecting hobbyist out there. I hope they fail in the ratings miserably.
I don't know how many people will read the info posted up by Spike............ But if they read the responses posted by individuals underneath.
We're going to be viewed very differently when out doing our hobby...

Why should only archeologists get to dig relics up? We do it all the time. Any metal detecting show would be great to watch. I can't wait!

Does it matter? I support any show about treasure hunting. i have enjoyed Gold fever for years and i have enjoyed any show that hes been made in the past or that will be made in the future. The digs are on private property so what makes some educated archaeologist have more of a right to dig than us hobbyists. We love history as much as them, I wish it was more like the UK where museums have to buy what we find but sadly it is not we as a nation would prefer that the relics rott in the ground rather than have someone not qualified dig it up. Its time we quite hiding what we do and start showing that we pull out treasures that are valuable to museums and the nation.

It's equivalent to someone leaving multiple positive reviews for a restaurant, but failing to mention the fact that they work there.
Yep, its the for profit part that is really disturbing. The few relic hunters I've hunted with and myself never sell anything and in fact we've donated a few small groupings of artifacts to local historical societies and I donated some materials to a local school. I was an Archaeologist 25 years ago and I can tell you that these guys are doing a great deal of harm with this show. Its hard enough to get permission without this.

It might have some negative effect in the short term, but I don't believe that everyone who watches it will run right out and buy a metal detector. I hope they have a couple of shows that demonstrate one can't just go out and make a million finds. Long term? I doubt it will have much effect except that it might produce some good, professional metal detectorists.
I left a comment on Spike aimed at the archaeologist. I ripped him a new one
for being an *(%@&^*$#!, and thinking that archaeologists are the only people in the world that should recover artifacts. I regret now saying enough about responsible metal detectorists.

The sad part about this whole fiasco is that there are problems and bad eggs on both sides of this issue. I was an Archie at one time and I understand completely where they're coming from, however, one of the things that isn't discussed is just how many artifacts are rotting away behind the walls at countless museums because of a lack of funding to proper conservation. Also, you wouldn't believe the amount of professional jelousy in that profession that keeps some information from being shared, causing a lot of wasted research (more money lost). These were just a few of the reasons I left that profession. Also, I saw a few cases where valuable artifacts never got past the mobile lab trailer and somehow disappeared (they use a lot of low paid or no paid volunteers). But, to be fair the relic hunting community, unfortunately has a fair share of looters that really are in it for the money and to them no place is off limits if they can get into it and if they locate a spot that is rich with artifacts and not run of the mill type artifacts either (a CW Supply depot that had well preserved leather artifacts comes to mind), how many would report it to the local historical society or state Archaeologist?
As a result of the above you have like-minded individuals, on both sides of this, that want the same thing (preservation of history) fighting with each other and considering each other the enemy. Instead, we need to be working together to keep the dishonest, greedy, and destructive types out of the equation (no matter who they are). What I would like to see is a responsible program where the Archaeologist and relic hunter are working together in a responsible, respectful way. NOT just the Archaeologist lording it over the relic hunter and tolerating him either, but respecting the research he's conducted and helping each other.

A couple of years ago a buddy of mine was asked to assist with an archaeological dig here in Montana. He did so willingly. When he got to the site with his detector they said that he can only detect a pre marked area that was no bigger than 20 square feet and that he had to mark all signals and not dig any of them. He said that he marked all the signals but when his detector swung over the line he was getting some great signals. Long story short he found the only great relic of the dig being a cross gun emblem. The story was published in the Montana newspaper with no mention of his efforts. They cant say that treasure hunters are a bunch of hillbillies just in it for the money because we don't make any money, An archaeologist pulles in a hole lot more that I would make selling my finds so I think they are in it for the money more than I am. I hope that these shows and any in the future will bring us all together so we can stand up united for our right to hunt on lands that we have worked hard on to get permission. We should not put our energy toward keeping our hobby a secrete, we should show people that there are things out there that need to be discovered.
