all they are gonna do is "blackeye" the hobby by showing "digging " on the air!
in my view ya CANNOT show that in back yards! it will beat us up
in the eyes of the public!..people will NOT care about the rest of the show,
they will just disdain the "digging!" count on this! watch out! just sayin'
Ok, maybe I am missing something in the above posts. I'm very interested in metal detecting; not just for my own benefit, but as an historian. I may be naieve, but my impression of the Spike/Digger series is that they are going to "private properties" (with permission) to discover articfacts that may never be discovered otherwise) and really, who cares who profits from the discoveries as long as they are discovered...and maybe, just maybe, metal detecting can be seen as an environmentally friendly hobby where detectors aren't raping the land, but are leaving it unharmed after exploring. The series may educate the public about metal detecting as a responsible group of researchers.
Am I "detecting" some hysterical paranoia here..........??
I have the same first impression of the show as Joe....that is, they will be searching with permission on mostly private properties....not nighthawking. Is this series much different from Meteorite Men? I haven't seen or heard of any backlash against metal detecting from that series. Although it does fill me with a great desire to go searching for those extremely valuable little blobs from space.
Can't wait to see it myself....might just learn something useful for my next hunt.
The show will probably have a fringe viewership anyway. I'm more concerned with the guy that trespasses and leaves uncovered or unsightly holes and doesn't clean up behind himself. That does more to damage public perception of our hobby than anything else IMHO.
Hi Montanagold, Please correct me if Iam wrong ,but the "laws already on the books" were most all written by Archies. and their "interpretation" when and if ever needed, is most always allowed to be done by some" Archie in charge. That is a bit simplied but I believe is the way it has worked now for quite awhile. So, their "right to dig" is more or less written in stone and geared in their favor to have Free Rein over all such matters. Read um and weep! And,as I mentioned, please correct me if I am wrong.I have been saying for years that the UK system may not be the best, but overall we are screwed before we dig the first dirt. HH, Charlie
Of course it matters. If you're going to offer praise and support for the show (and others like it) you should at least mention if you are personally involved in one of them.
It's equivalent to someone leaving multiple positive reviews for a restaurant, but failing to mention the fact that they work there.
I couldn't agree more Elton - this shines that "evil" light right on the rest of us. That one bad apple in the barrel.....

I don't know how many people will read the info posted up by Spike............ But if they read the responses posted by individuals underneath.
We're going to be viewed very differently when out doing our hobby...
I didn't read them all, but of the many I read. They were all negative..
Yep, we are all screwed. Im watching it now. Now when i go to a house and ask for permission they are gonna think im like the two wackos on the tv show and the word diggers is the worse possible name for it. WTF
I didn't watch for two reasons. 1. I own 5 metal detectors, but not one television. 2. Whether it was good or bad I think I would have cried knowing what it's going to do to this hobby . Also, since I don't own a TV the other shoppers in the Walmart electronics section would probably start laughing at me.
It is what it is. Like it or not it was fun to watch and there you have it. BTW I have not been rude to anyone so I would expect the same curtisy. Thank you.
i ordinarily would agree with those sentiments you just expressed
however, this is NOT what is going to transpire here!.the public WILL make
a "negative" connection with the opening of holes on the air! it does NOT matter
whether the holes are "properly covered" or not, because the actual act of "digging"
is disdained by the public in general.THIS is what will hurt us as "hobbyists"the general
public does NOT understand the digging of holes on public ,or private property, regardless of the necessity
of it in recovering targets.to be perfectly truthful,i have been a hobbyist for more than 33 years
and even though i am virtually an expert at covering my holes,i STILL am paranoid WHEREVER,and WHENEVER
I "open a hole",BECAUSE i am not sure even after all these years,IF i am going to be asked to leave.THIS is
the "main thrust" as to why this show will bring nothing but grief down upon all us hobbyists in the field!
you just cannot show opening of holes on national television!.IT JUST LOOKS BAD!..PERIOD!
Maybe if your so worried about getting kicked off sites, and constantly paranoid you should rethink your choice in hobby. Your gonna give yourself an ulcer with all that paranoia. We hurt the hobby every day when we post in forums and look its still here.
I did watch the pilot shows last night. They seem like decent guys, but maybe a little over-excited about finding stuff ? And the nicknames they are giving for their finds are embarassing. I think there should be a disclaimer at the end of the show stating that absolutely "no one" except them, call a colonial find a "cologne" ... or however it's spelled. It's not a "Toke" ...it's a token. "Juice" and "Nectar" ?? Really? The TV producers must have insisted that they act like 10 year olds to make the show interesting.
And of course .... they are selling their finds ..... that leaves a bad taste in the mouth.
I knew it was going to be a huge POS travesty before it even aired. Let's see, National Geo doesn't really like detectorists, so why not put on a show that totally misrepresents the hobby & majority of the hobbyists....a show that serves NG's real hidden agenda......elimination of detecting except by archeologists...........read the non-detecting general public's posts on this show.....they are seeing these guys (and now all) detectorists as archeological robbers/pot stealers. Great job guys
Feel free to email NG and tell them to stop misrepresenting our hobby.
I am going to make a prediction. If this show is archy driven to put our hobby in a bad light, I predict that these guys will "find" something that "requires" the archys to come in at the end and "save the day". It will be the "climax of the season". just my two cents. And imo, these two fellows hurt themselves personally by the way they allowed themselves to be potrayed. I think they will regret their behavior on tv as it is not realistic for folks who are digging in the field. Lick a jellyfish? That right there removes any credibility these guys might have had. Now joe q public sees someone detecting in a park and will associate that person to the behavior he saw from these two fellows on tv. These guys may only be pawns.....time will tell.
