I think I have all ready let Larry in on this one but it was one of my most fun hunts.
My wife has a cousin that lives south of Decatur that has a excavating business and he was taking out an old basement were a house had been and had a couple of loads of dirt and brick that he had hauled away and was finishing up when the person that the place belonged to came by to see how he was doing. He shut down his equipment and they were standing talking when they looked down and there was a trail of silver coins from his truck back to he cellar hole. The went to the cellar hole and found what was left of a crock that had held these coins located in the wall. the owner pulled the cousin off the job. The family retrieved all the coins and then went to the cousin's were he had dumped the loads of dirt & brick and used rack's to sift through the dirt to see how much they could find. After they had got all they thought they could find the wife's cousin called me and told me about it and wanted to know if I would be interested in taking a detector around the dirt and bricks and see what they had missed. I couldn't wait to get down there and check. I spent the best part of a day and found some Half's, Quarter's and a few dimes. Nothing real old but most from the 40's. They offered to let me keep let me few halves.
I had never seen anything like it and I wanted to see what they missed at the cellar hole but the owner said no. They wouldn't say how much was in the cache but I found 35 halves's and Quarter's.
All ways wanted to go to that property and see how much was run over by the cat and shoved into the ground. Still would like to check that place but the same people still own it last time I checked with the cousin.
That was in the early 70's .

Wow Roy,I know that must to have been fun.....Make you wonder what was found there and what may be there now......thanks for the story Roy,If you will tell us somemore......God Bless......HH........Dan

Yes Dan It was a great experience. I would have liked to have gone over the wall's before he started. Liked to have had pictures of that crock hidden in the wall. Makes you wonder just how many crock's have been covered up.
Roy

WOW--What a story & experience Roy.---Maybe you could go back to the owners now & offer to "split" anything that you find with them.---That might make a difference in them letting you hunt the place (especially after this much time has passed).----Got another story for us Roy? --------Del

Thanks for pokin him Larry...apparently you hit the "on" switch. Keep em comin Roy, we'll never get tired of hearin stories like that.

OK...I got one that was told to me a few years back.....This guy had a friend that operated heavy equipment, they were digging a ditch for a water or sewer line by an old tavern....The operator was digging along and saw something strange coming out of the ground like oil but shinny. He got off the machine to investigate this strange sight. It was silver dollars mixed with oil and put in pickle jars. There were 5 jars if I rember correctlyand all the dollars were dated before 1921 I think he said...So apprently the tavern owner thought the coins would rust.....5 gallon size pickle jars filled with silver dollars and oil....I believe the guy that told me this and he believed his friend......Thats all he would tell me....Thats all he may know but that just goes to show you the good stuff is out there......HH.......Dan

Dan.
Pickled silver dollars. I would like five jars of pickled silver dollars.:clapping:
Thanks Dan good story.

I"ll share one, stop me if you've heard it already. I met a local guy several months back who made an all-world find. He had retired and decided to take up MD'ing so he picked up an MXT 300. Two months later he was walking through his neighborhood and noticed a house being demolished. After receiving permission to hunt he eventually got a confusing signal in the corner of where the garage had been that was registering a ferrous target mostly AND something else. After he dug down about 6-7" he came across an all-plastic purse and inside was 51 Silver Dollars with dates from late 1800's to more modern, some near-mint! After composing himself, he realized that there was no ferrous metal in his find so he scanned the hole and got a strong signal. A little deeper he came across a piece plywood and upon lifting it, discovered a steel file box approx16"w. x 12"h. x 10"dp.,( file-box size). Inside was stuffed with hundreds of silver coins ( including dozens upon dozens of silver dollars with a couple plastic tubes filled with near-mint cond coins dating back to early 20th century) as well as hundreds of silver coins of all denominations and dates. It also contained a box with hundreds of old, copper wheaties and the like. I have seen the treasure with my own eyes. He has never had them appraised, nor is he interested in doing so. ( although, I'm told, he was offered several thousand $'s for ONE of the more valuable Silver Dollar's ) The melt-weight alone is worth more than both my vehicles combined. Hope you enjoyed the story. He also found an 1853 ( I think ) half-dollar INSIDE a tree stump at his house but that's a story for another time.

Exactly Roy. He was opening up the tubes of near-mint ( to my uneducated eye ) silver dollars and just pouring them onto the hood of his 67' Mustang. I couldn't really talk, just mumble a little. I've tried to call him and see if he'd like to hunt together but he's a bit older than I and hasn't been up to it yet. He's made several unbelievable finds. I think he cheats....or he's a witch.

A Male witch is a warlock and I think he just maybe. As long as he don't turn on you might be a good person to hang around with:twodetecting:

That's what I'm thinkin Roy. In all seriousness, he's one of the nicest, humblest most unassuming people I've ever met. I just wish I could get him out hunting with me so I can get some of his luck to rub off on me. Thanks for the chat and I wish you well on your recovery.

BTW Roy. If he IS a warlock and you think that scares me, you haven't met my ex-wife. Now THERE"S something to frighten any man, AND she never found anything of value outside of my wallet ( WTH was I thinkin ? ) LOL Have a great weekend all and make some great finds.

Hey
Scott.
My youngest son called my wife ( his mother) witchy women. If she points her finger at you then you are in trouble. So I walk a line shore don't want her mad at me. She pointed her finger at some house's down the road from where we live and said something needs to be done about that mess and that mess and that mess and a few month's later a tornado came through and cleaned them up. Scared me
