where to go when it rains..

Last12know, I spoke with a lady who I work with who would be one year older than Clarence. She agreed with me about the common use of playing cards among kids of that era. She also said that it wasn't uncommon for guys to speak pig latin back then, I didn't know that. She also said that a guy probably buried the jar as most girls of that time were to prissy to crawl into a cave like that.

Another thing she told me was alot of kids were burying "time capsules" or putting notes in bottles and setting them adrift. A time capsule like yours may be from one person or several people, each one putting an object in the jar.

She had no idea about the antler, I'll ask my brother when I see him in a couple days, he is that age also.

I also thought of another use of the letters T.M.B. ........... too many beers!!! You said the cave was littered with steel beer cans.

went to another cave in the area... no beer cans or coins....... did find a bullet though. there is also another we will have a closer look at.. need two people though. would be a bummer to fall and break a leg and not have anyone around...

the beer cans in the first were all steel...so i'm thinking it was a real popular party place... will go back and look some more..

too many beers sounds about rite... :)

Be carfull in them caves. Are you worried about bears, or are there not many around? What about othere critters. Sure wouldnt want to meet anything in such tight quarters. They would have the upper hand.
It is interesting though. I doubt you find anything like you did,,, again. But who knows it could turn up something.I don't think it is worth the risk.
Good Luck

we did have a bear swim the river from iowa and into illinois north of savanna.. it headed up into wisconsin i think.. was a while ago... not many bears here.... would be more worried about bats.. but the colder weather is keeping them in.. they'll be in full hibernation mode soon i'd think... (first bear i'd ever heard of in the area.. was lost i'm thinking)

side note.. clarence called.. said the crystal lake newspaper is going to do an article.. said he'd send me a copy..

I just seen your news article on another forum. Pointed them this way,,Figured I move this thread back to the top.

well it was raining...so where do you goto look for stuff when it rains?..... a cave? so went to look for a cave... and found one. entrance had several pennies etc... had to crawl for a ways on hands and knees then a little bit a belly action... got to the back and worked our way forward.... lots of beer cans (old steel beer cans) all buried about a foot down... got about a 1/3 the way out and got a low tone... been getting them with beer cans but figured what the heck.. someone had to lose something crawling back in here... dug and found the lid to a skippy peanut butter jar which was attached to the jar wrapped in electrical tape... hmmm.. shook it and something was rattling around in there.... couldn't open the jar so we put it in the bucket and kept looking.. more pennies and a dime... will have to clean them up... got home and opened the jar... used a cement floor which worked well.... inside was a pair of roy orbison style sunglasses, a magnifiying glass, several playing cards taped together, an antler necklace on a leather thong, a note in a pill bottle and a 10k jostens gold class ring from 1962 cystal lake high...., a photograph of a guy in a black leather jacket in front of a swingset and a newspaper clipping...

unfortunately the papers where so damp that unfolding them to read it was nigh impossible... was able to see that it was addressed to dear finder... the middle of the note was unlegible.. and the end which stated it was buried in 1965... ending with a signature of t.m.b.

the newspaper clipping was also unlegible.... figure the guy had to be around 21 when he buried it .. maybe drafted? my history isn't so good.. maybe he buried it to leave something if he didn't make it back from vietnam? anyhow can't figure out what the magnifying glass was for.. kinda think it was to make out the clues on the playing cards etc.. but they got damp and i don't think they will be salvageable....

so .. think i can find someone fom crystal lake high? crystal lake is about an hour and half from here... three high schools are listed.... central, south and a third i've yet to find .. the ring has a big c and a big i on the sides.. anyone else try to research an old class ring? was surprised it was there as it says 10k on the inside and is heavy.. same company made mine.. i think it's jostens....probably mispelled it...

brian
SO that was you? I read that article. Neat find.

was surprised to see it everywhere....lol eventually i'll find time to go again before it snows i hope.... haven't heard anything new from clarence but if i do i'll post it..

Sounds like that cave you were in with the beer cans collapsed at some time...If it was littered with beer cans, it had to be more open than it is now...I would get really annoyed if I had to crawl on my belly every time I wanted to party...lol

HH,

good point.... maybe i'll go back and see if i can find anything this year.... surprised that it's been so long since i visited the forum.. too many hobbies and not enough time...

could something tragic happened to the person and glasses and ring were put there for a memorial and paper clipping told the story

Instead of a jilted girlfriend, how about one who's boyfriend was killed some how, accident, Viet Nam, who knows. Didn't you say the picture was of a guy with a leather jacket? Maybe a bike accident. The reason I suspect this is that about twenty years ago, on a beach here in Maine, I found a Skoal can deeply buried and it's contents were a Navy bosun's whistle, pictures of a guy in a Navy uniform and an engagement ring. There was a name on the back of the pictures, and through some research through the military, I found out that the sailor was killed in a car wreck a few months before I found the can. I returned the can and contents to the beach and re-buried them where I don't believe they will ever be found. Maybe your find is something similar.
