where to go when it rains..

well it was raining...so where do you goto look for stuff when it rains?..... a cave? so went to look for a cave... and found one. entrance had several pennies etc... had to crawl for a ways on hands and knees then a little bit a belly action... got to the back and worked our way forward.... lots of beer cans (old steel beer cans) all buried about a foot down... got about a 1/3 the way out and got a low tone... been getting them with beer cans but figured what the heck.. someone had to lose something crawling back in here... dug and found the lid to a skippy peanut butter jar which was attached to the jar wrapped in electrical tape... hmmm.. shook it and something was rattling around in there.... couldn't open the jar so we put it in the bucket and kept looking.. more pennies and a dime... will have to clean them up... got home and opened the jar... used a cement floor which worked well.... inside was a pair of roy orbison style sunglasses, a magnifiying glass, several playing cards taped together, an antler necklace on a leather thong, a note in a pill bottle and a 10k jostens gold class ring from 1962 cystal lake high...., a photograph of a guy in a black leather jacket in front of a swingset and a newspaper clipping...

unfortunately the papers where so damp that unfolding them to read it was nigh impossible... was able to see that it was addressed to dear finder... the middle of the note was unlegible.. and the end which stated it was buried in 1965... ending with a signature of t.m.b.

the newspaper clipping was also unlegible.... figure the guy had to be around 21 when he buried it .. maybe drafted? my history isn't so good.. maybe he buried it to leave something if he didn't make it back from vietnam? anyhow can't figure out what the magnifying glass was for.. kinda think it was to make out the clues on the playing cards etc.. but they got damp and i don't think they will be salvageable....

so .. think i can find someone fom crystal lake high? crystal lake is about an hour and half from here... three high schools are listed.... central, south and a third i've yet to find .. the ring has a big c and a big i on the sides.. anyone else try to research an old class ring? was surprised it was there as it says 10k on the inside and is heavy.. same company made mine.. i think it's jostens....probably mispelled it...

brian

Well the ring wasn't buried by its owner, hmmm. Thats odd, seems fishy to me. What are the cards and how were they taped? When dried are you going to be able to read more?
Its a caper??? for sure.

you thinking it was too valuable for the owner to have buried it? ok.. that is plausible... they were playing cards.. had a red back.. they were taped together with what looked like paper tape... don't think i'll get a whole lot more info.. will try. there was a photograph but the newspaper clipping if stuck to the back of it.. couldn't see it there was a name... it was good and deep on the side of the cave... no distinguishing landmarks to refind it by that i saw... this cave does not see a lot of traffic these days.. but it did see quite a bit when beer cans were beer cans...lol.. the kind that hurt if you got hit with one even mt...you want a photo? i didn't save the peanut butter jar... i'll go take a photo...

Call Josten's, I have heard that they keep records about their rings. You have the Initials. Maybe they only made rings for one of the three schools or maybe they made rings for all 3. Are there school colors on the ring? Maybe that c and i you mentioned is a clue. If you can narrow down the school, that school or the nearby public library may have a copy of the yearbook.

You said the the letter was signed with different initials than what are on the ring.. Not the same person.

Only way to find the owner of the ring is to find a yearbook and look through them. The school staff cannot give out any info on anyone period.

Yes some pics would be cool.

pictures anyone? the big C and I that is on the outside edges of the ring i think are school initials? usually personal intitals are on the inside band i think... didn't mean to imply i thought the initals differed...then again i guess they could be another person's initials....

pic of everything minus the jar...

so what do you all think? and yes...that is the dead language of pig latin on the bottom of the note...

That is really strange. Keep them items together and safe. Try to find who the owner was and if there was any fowl play with him.Alive or deceased. You may want to have the police involved ,in the future, depending on what you can find. Try to find the jar it was in.

I'm not real sure about the initials on the ring but I thought the outside initials were the owners.

sheesh.. now your worrying me.... see the prints on the playing cards? hmmm...? the jar is gone.. compactor.. was taped completely up top to bottom in electrical tape.. only the center of the lid reading skippy was visible.. foul play?

someone wanted it found... was only luck we went to that cave and crawled up into the back end of it.. if i hadn't been bored and if it hadn't been raining.... nobody in their rite mind would have gone back in there with a metal detector... i'm thinking they didn't really think it'd be found...

the foot down for the beer cans was probably more like eight to ten inches.. if they'd been smaller i don't think they'd have registered... sometimes only got a signal from one side and then none for a bit and then back...i mean sheesh it was dark in there..lol

I happen to have that same model of magnifying glass I think. Is the handle knurled and the overall length of the glass including the hoop and handle 4-7/8" long and the diameter of the hoop around the glass 2"?
I have attached a photo of my magnifying glass next to a US quarter.

I got the glass from Santa in about 1959.

very similar... this one measures four inches long and 1 1/2 inches across the glass....could very well have been made by the same folks...

The owner's initials are C.I. That is who you should be looking for. The mascot on the front (lion?) will identify the school from others in the community. The pig latin, well I never heard a guy use it, just the girls. T.M.B. is the person who buried the jar. Probably a jilted girl friend who told him, he will never get his ring back. Could be her initials or something he called her " The Mad B****".

Knurled handle Mark? Good word. Comes right after knucklehead in the dictionary. My family had one just like the ones shown,so those were very common in those days. The sunglasses might have some value, being over 40 years old.

I'll try to google the pig latin and see if there is a clue there.

This is straight out of the Nancy Drew mystery: The case of the sunglasses, class ring, playing cards, antler necklace, photograph in the peanut butter jar all hidden in the cave. The only difference is the magnifying glass.

Go figure???

The pig latin translates to "sep of nineteen sixty five" (September 1965). Doesn't tell us much except that the ring was probably buried at the beginning of the guys Junior year.

last12know, if you ever get down toward the Kewanee area let me know. We'll go hunting sometime.

the jilted girlfriend theory seems to be the most probable scenario i've heard so far... i think it's the one i'd follow up on... so c.i... hmm... i'll have to goto facebook again... i really can't picture a girl going in there to bury it though... really was up in there a ways.. and i'm thinking there were critters in there forty some years ago as well. maybe it was a little more open then.. the cans were buried quite deep... maybe running water carried the dirt down.. did kind of head up into the bluff... as it was the few bats we saw weren't going to be bothering anyone. tried to goto classmates.com but if your already using the email it doesn't seem to let you search other schools? kewanee is what little over an hour or so from savanna? did a search and there is an iowa illinois club out of davenport? or geneseo? got a few other places that should be just as interesting at that one... we were actually looking for something a little more mysterious..lol can't say without giving it away.

i buried a jar full of change when i was a kid... was thinking i mite try for that next.... have to wait for it to quit raining for that one though.

I agree now with the girlfriend thing, or at least possible. Thought it might be something different before translating pig latin. I went and checked it out too. Didnt know could do that, learned something new.
Still very strange, whats up with the cards?? Must have meant something to whom ever buried it.

Maybe some crazy girl needed these items to put a spell on him. Could transfer to the person who finds it.

well guess what?..... there is a clarence iversen class of 62 from crystal lake central high..... now how many guys have the intials c and I? not many with i in a class of 62.. we could have a winner... i sent an email with enough details to sound plausible... left some out.. will have to see it's his.. i'm inclined to think that it is..
brian

as far as crazy women... i don't need help finding them.... spell or not i've gotten the attention of more than a few... :)

It seems to me that all these things belonged to this guy. The sunglasses, the deer antler, the playing cards and the ring. Probably the guy in the picture.
Maybe he would go over to this girls house and play cards with her. Back then a girl didn't take a guy up to her bedroom, if he came over to the house, on a date. You either watched TV or sat at the kitchen table and played a game or cards, somewhere where the parents could keep an eye on you.

You are not letting any grass grow on this. Just posted this hours ago and might have er figured out soon. If you find the owner of the ring I sure he can make things clear.

You know what happened to the people in Raiders of the Lost Arc? Lock the doors tonight, there's some voodo going on here.
