What is it about the Compadre?

I find it interesting how many of us that have multiple detectors, often hunt with and post finds using the Compadre even though we have more upscale detectors in our arsenals. I guess the niche filled by the Compadre is a perfect match to the machine and the performance for the price is great.

I am addicted to the Compadre. It has found me my best stuff to date. I just cannot get over how simple and effective it is. I take it on every hunt unless I am trying to learn a new detector, because i know if I take the Compadre with me I will revert back to it every time and I will not learn the new detector. It never ceases to amaze me as to what i find with it. It is hard to explain to anyone who does not own one just how great this detector is. It is fantastic. HH

I agree I have both the 7" and the 5.75" haven't used them in a week or so only because I'm learning my Lobo ST. Had someone try to offer me $75 for one at which I laughed and easily declined. I most likely will always keep at least 1.

I think people get the Compadre initially because it is simple and inexpensive. They find a lot of good targets and then feel the need to "move up". When they do, finds tend to drop. Too much information gives you excuses not to dig, which a a trap for those high end detectors.

TID information, even on the most expensive detectors, is questionable at any depth, but really unreliable beyond 6".

The Compadre is a perfect blend of technology that is geared towards finding very small targets like gold charms, while offering a true all metal mode.

It may not get the get the depth of an E-Trac or a V3i, but it will hit on 90% of the same targets either of those machines will.

Next question, are those 10% of targets worth the extra $1300.00?

I've seen some pretty cool video's on youtube where people were using it for beach hunting. I'd never thought. lol Very cool tho.

Here's the thing about hunting beaches or fields of good size with any small-coil detector , for one thing you tend to get frustrated feeling like you are trying to dig a pond with a small spoon. Even if you grid these large areas into small sections, how do you know where you left off when returning on a different day ? If you leave grid stakes, what are the chances they will still be exactly where you left them ? When you think of the things that could happen to those carefully placed stakes, it's a gamble, especially on beaches regularly visited by large numbers of adults and curious children. Of course, some detectorists might have the willy-nilly attitude of Scarlet O'Hara's maid Prissy in Gone With The Wind, and just wander around happily swinging their detector and humming a little tune. Can you get a mental picture of Prissy swinging her metal detector ?

Very well said, and true.

It's a horrible little detector! You guys need to get rid of yours and let me suffer being the only Compadre user left. I will take the fall for the misery this machine causes. I mean it beeps on the SLIVERS of aluminum foil and I even once found the ball in a ball point pen refill. Who wants to fool with that? Horrible machine!

Thank you for your sacrifice, but we are good people. We are willing to join in your suffering. No one should be alone.

It's the story of my life-I try to help others and no one listens. Did I tell you about the time..........:sadwalk:

I also suffer through using this silly thing.
I use it to try to find foil and tabs and zinc pennies, but gold and silver rings and silver and gold chains keep popping up.

Hope we can meet,, have a beer or two, and cry together.

...Back in the 70s when Detectors were basic and simpler to use machines we were all happy digging everything that went `beep`..Everything we dug was a surprise to us ,good or bad.No beep was left undug. Then came the `discriminator`and everyone started getting picky about what they dug.So when it said `junk` most of us walked away.Just think about what was left behind....Remember those `iffy` signals that were dug and turned out to be a nice `keeper`?..So much for discrimination!!.Now we see manufactures starting to go the way of the cell phone, where you can do more than just call someone. Its not your fathers detector anymore(or phone)!.Now we get color displays, pictures of `possible`targets, multi tones,gps,110 adjustments before you can start swinging the (heavy) machine and price tags that have no end.. Were being taken out of the equation as detectorists...when it says dig...you dig.Just like when the school bell rings!...`THATS` what it is about the Compadre..Its a back to the beginning, make your own decision, affordable, easy to use, lightweight, find everything detector.....just my 2cents worth..Ralph

well stated Ralph :detecting:

Man!
For the price of my new CTX lower shaft,,, I could have purchased one of these darn things...AND THEN SOME!
Maybe my kids could use one.....

I started this thread because there are so many references to the Compadre. I recently picked up an older model with the 7" coil to replace the first one I had and foolishly sold. IMHO the Compadre is a perfect match to the niche for which it was designed. One knob simplicity, light weight, simple to use and very effective for the price. AND JUST PLAIN FUN!!

What is with all you guys?
Ahh...I get it, now!

For a long time this has been considered close to a toy, not a real detector like the big boys on the block.
Something you buy if you only have enough money for a beginners unit, or for a child.

Sure, a few had them, and tried to tell the world that they were more valuable than it's price would lead people to believe, but it mostly stayed a little secret that only it's owners really ever truly knew.
The secret that it would find things, valuable things that the other machines with more knobs and buttons and glorious screens could mostly only dream about...and it would find them easily.

Not all of the owners knew this secret, either.
Some bought them, found a few coins and maybe a couple of nice things, but never really got to know the Compadre as a friend and a partner, or understood the true nature of this meek and mild Clark Kent of a detector, never realizing the Superman like senses it really possessed.
So into the closet it went, replaced by a newer and shinier replacement that held the promise of riches and coins and the most valuable of metals...and it was forgotten.

Now, a resurgence, an awakening, and far and wide the word is finally out, a secret no more.
Rejoice!
Longtime closet dwellers are again seeing the light of day, new machines are being ordered, and this time, thanks to an enlightened few disciples like Slingshot and Skiwhiz, and Tabdog, the Way of the Compadre, a new religion is being born before our eyes.

Spread the word, brothers and sisters, use your Minelabs and Fishers and Whites and Garretts, but unless you also have a Compadre in the arsenal, you might never truly know of all the riches that lie beneath our feet!
