What is it about the Compadre?

+1 :)

Once upon a time in Arkie land, there was a character named David Brown who made the Compadre famous...I bought one recently because of him...Dave was ahead of anyone else out there with respect to this Little BIG metal detector. Dave is also known to a few as TABDOG...I see him occasionally on other sites, but in spite of everything he belongs on Finds..Any chance the mods and owners would invite him back??

...Back in the 70s when Detectors were basic and simpler to use machines we were all happy digging everything that went `beep`..Everything we dug was a surprise to us ,good or bad.No beep was left undug. Then came the `discriminator`and everyone started getting picky about what they dug.So when it said `junk` most of us walked away.Just think about what was left behind....Remember those `iffy` signals that were dug and turned out to be a nice `keeper`?..So much for discrimination!!.Now we see manufactures starting to go the way of the cell phone, where you can do more than just call someone. Its not your fathers detector anymore(or phone)!.Now we get color displays, pictures of `possible`targets, multi tones,gps,110 adjustments before you can start swinging the (heavy) machine and price tags that have no end.. Were being taken out of the equation as detectorists...when it says dig...you dig.Just like when the school bell rings!...`THATS` what it is about the Compadre..Its a back to the beginning, make your own decision, affordable, easy to use, lightweight, find everything detector.....just my 2cents worth..Ralph

Tabdog used to kick butt with his two differant (coils) Compadre's............even when other people were running with expensive machines.

Dig it all ! Know your machine so to get the most out of it.

I think my question is most important. HOW IS HE? I've searched on the forums I knew he was on- and the last I heard of him was almost a year ago. Hope he's fine and would appreciate any info.

He belongs to a private MDing club in Ark...........he's one of the main officers (elected for life I believe).

He was a great Ambassador for MDing...........I think he got tired of the snipes from stupid people & the arguments.

He showed people that even with a simple MDer he could come in behind somebody (with a more expensive machine) & still find things. 90% operator - 10% machine

Good Hunting----------------

Thanks, HaRM,
Just wanted to know his health status and that he's doing fine. Maybe he'll find another prehistoric dollar!:clapping:

I'm still new at this but have the vaquero and the compadre now,,, my state of mind when I reach for the detectors is the vaquero is more technical (more thinking) where I have to check ground balance all the time and then mess with the threshold if I'm near wet sand, but the compadre when I take that I know I'm thinking that I just want to turn it on and find stuff,,,,also I've yet to be convinced the vaquero will find something the compadre wont and I do love both....my battle is should I get the silver Umax,,,,,,,,,the compadre will always have a home here and I would love to get my hands on the bigger coild version some day.

I don't use my Silver umax near as much since I got the Compadre. And I can't imagine using it if I had the Vaq.

so I have the best of both worlds and should hold off on the silver??

My opinion is yes, if the have the Compadre, you really don't need a Silver unless you want a larger search coil.

Smudge is right....However, I don't like standing in one place with the 5.75 inch coil..Any area with a lot of potential masking, Vaquero gets turned off, and the 7 inch coil Compadre goes to town...I was intimidated by a 1266 X something Fisher. Didn't find any silver for two years. Sold it bought a new Silver UMax and the fun began..Started popping Mercs out of the ground... Tried the 5.75 concentric, sold it, got a clean sweep, sold that as well..Not enough depth for high grass. Sold the Silver UMax, and just purchased another...Have both the ten inch and stock coil. This one is going in an Otter Box to use in the local streams, swimming holes...Right now, I am trying to decide if I want to keep the 10 inch coil...But, the smooth coil with no holes , ridges, swings so much easier in water..... On the other hand, the 8 inch coil may make for better pin pointing in water..The stock V 8 by 9 coil makes a good butter churn in water... Fair amount of drag......
