Spent the week with the 3 kHz coil

why would they, you said NOTHING wrong, I agree with you 100%
I appreciate the technical details, but I know some members, just want to go have fun w/o being too complicated, no problem with that

I think you are underestimating the cognitive skills of the X-Terra user's on this forum. I realize you took an extended leave from our fourm. But in your absence, we've evolved into quite a knowlegeable group of X-Terra users. We have dozens and dozens and dozens of accomplished detectorists from all corners of the World and all walks of life, posting on the forum. And hundreds, if not thousands more, reading those posts. Frankly, that is the central theme ............. A group of people with a common interest, sharing their thoughts, in an effort to better understand the capabilities of the X-Terra. As such, I don't understand how reading this forum will take "all the fun out of what this is all about". If someone simply wants to beep and dig, reading this forum shouldn't change that. But for those wanting to maximize their efforts, and better understand the functionality and versatility of the X-Terra platform, this forum ain't a bad place to start. As to your chosing to make your comment when you did.....Barnacle Bill (a moderator) had addressed a post to me,(the other moderator) asking if I had noticed the 705 had lower audio tones than the X-70. Recognizing that the 705 is relatively new in the marketplace, and knowing that others may read the response, I answered with an explanation as to which notch segments (of each model) had differing tone frequencies. I also made a comment on an audio difference I recognized between the X-70 and 705, on deep targets. I did not attempt to educate anyone on the intricacies of the 705 audio reverberation. I'll save that for a new string of posts.

You said: "If the truth was known, most are looking for basic down to earth tips on an easier way to use the X-Terra's.",.................. it is ironic you mentioned that............more than 3-years ago, I introduced a series of articles I called "Coinshooting" which do exactly that. For those who are interested, those posts can be found in our FAQFAQ section, along with many other informative posts. If someone can't find the answer to their question there, the SEARCH feature works quite well. If someone has a specific question, they can do it the old fashion way and post it to the forum.

And finally, I took no disrespect from your post. Nor did you make me angry. This forum is what it is because of the people who participate in it. Some posts may be more interesting to certain users. And other posts may interest another group. If people are bored by, overwhelmed by, or get confused by what is being discussed in a specific post, they can either ignore the post or ask questions. That option is at their fingertips, literally. It is not our intent to alienate anyone. But we are not going to avoid a technical discussion for fear of "taking the fun out" of the hobby. Not when so very, very many have expressed interest in those "techie" discusssions. HH Randy

I appreciate it.... HH Randy

I have to go with Goes4Ever; this kind of discussion is what I look forward to on the forums. Unless they become personal, differing opinions shouldn't offend anyone. There's a lot of food for thought here.

You are no doubt right and all Minelab products have made leaps and bounds in their technology. I have taken an extended leave as I am the sole Moderator of a much smaller forum based in New Hampshire. Plus I spend time selling and teaching the basics of all Minlab products. I work with people that are new to the hobby or product. My limited experience is In the Field with hands on use.
Maybe I am the Dinosaur here so hopefully that would be taken into account. Your information is on my desk top, not because I'm new to detecting. But because I find it a well worth adding to my library.

Which coil (DD or concentric) are you testing the ground mineralization with to determine your ground balance number (above 28 or below).

Not sure who you are addressing the question to. But I always try the concentric first. Simply because the majority of the sites I hunt have moderate to low mineralization. And concentrics give more depth and better TID at those sites. If I happen to be at a site where the concentric sets up at less than 29 on the ground phase indication, I swap out the concentric for a DD. Again, nothing scientific about it. Just my preference, based on my experiences in this part of the Country. One exception........ I am hunting an area with tons of modern trash, regardless of the mineralization, I always use the 6-inch DD for it's separation characteristics. HH Randy

Randy, thanks for the info. I now have several new things to try. I am really enjoying this forum since a lot of good information is readily shared and I am new and can use all the good tips I can get. Most of the guys I hunt with are more proficient with their machines and less at sharing good info.

You're more than welcome. Glad you are enjoying the posts and hopefully learning more about your X-Terra. No two of us hunt exactly the same. So don't be afraid to try different settings and procedures to determine what works best for you at your sites. With perseverance, patience and a little luck, your hunting buddies will soon be asking you for tips and wanting to borrow your X-Terra! HH Randy

If you find yourself at a trashy site which 6" coil should you use, the DD HF or the concentric MF?

Until they come out with a small DD coil at 3 kHz, I'll keep using the 6-inch DD at 18.75. Although I find the higher frequency a bit more "sensitive" to aluminum and ferrous targets than the other two freqs, the separation is better with the DD than the concentric. Both are good coils. But I like the separation better on the DD. JMHO HH Randy
