Question for all posters on this forum....

If you post your stuff with pics of where you were when you found them then it's obvious to the person loosing the item who may have found it. Myself I try never to give any of that type of data away. Yes my username says I'm from Michigan but where in Michigan. I think we can still safely post our finds as long as the casual oberver can't tell who, when, or where. Personally I think it's a mistake to show pics of friends on the beach with you as this is a good way for the looser to connect the dots. If it was me I would take pics of the beach without any background landmarks or friends, giving away information.
Also when people ask what I'm looking for I always say metal. If they probe further I say pocket change. If that won't shake them off and they ask do I ever find any thing good, I say once in a great while something nice will end up in the basket. That always seems to deflate their enthusiasm and they're on the move again. Kids especially are a real pain but curious. I sometimes really want to tell them but catch myself before they become the beach loudspeaker.
I'm always just looking for metal.

then I read further where you say

"I don't have a detector yet,as many know." and "How can the next generation benefit from all the hiding, let alone newbies like me?Are you gonna need a "secret handshake" soon?Hope not."

All I can say is that I may be speaking for everybody on this forum by saying that we are all here for you in cultivating your interest in this hobby, but PLEASE walk a mile in our shoes before you judge us.

As a hobby, We are in the minority and you would not believe the opportunistic vultures that start to circle you when they see a person who sticks out like a sore thumb because of the "high tech" machine he is swinging around. Granted most are innocently curious but some on this forum have been stung by irrational and greedy people. For some reason in their mind (greed vultures) it is not fair that even though we do all the work, they are not sharing in the rewards.

And for your statement:
"As for the ones in the "secret society",I'd rather not join that club."

I respond with Hoss, YOUR KILLING ME!!!!!!!!!!!....if this was a secret society we sure as hell would not be posting it on a forum for the world to see!!!!!!!!!!

GET A DETECTOR, GET OUR HELP AND START HAVING FUN...FOR A CHANGE!!!

I have thought about this too.

In general, I think some degree of discretion is wise with this hobby.

But, I don't think there is much risk in posting pics. Our society seems to agree with the "finders keepers" rule.

And, I'm not worried about encouraging competition. Detecting isn't easy and requires perseverance and study and work. Few people have the determination to stick with it for long.

return all found items that were traceable. Class rings are the prime example. Other jewelry with a name on it may offer a clue but, usually, it pretty elusive.

I'll admit, finding the owner of a valuable piece of jewelry is a real conflict of interest. Sort of like the old line of watching your mother in law driving off the cliff in your new Cadillac.

Are you saying that if you found a diamond ring and saw the owner searching for it your would skulk off and not return the item? :poke: Any different then seeing it posted on the beach, office, newspaper classified, or posted by someone right here on this forum?

You said you are afraid the loser will "connect the dots." If it is really the person that lost the item, I thought that is what we are supposed to do, hard as it may be.

I think the original comment was about being concerned about "others" seeing an item posted and CLAIMING it was theirs. Now THAT would be hard to take. Finding a real nitro item and then finding that you had given it to a fast talking crook.:rage::rant:

I would not be surprised if some posters on this forum (and others) have already been approached (either physically or by electronic means) by those wrongfully claiming something posted in a photo is theirs. If it hasn't happened yet then I'm sure sooner or later it will. Let's just hope they choose one of the police officers on here first and get caught early on. ;)

For me I love to post photos of my finds (Garrett forum) and family out detecting too. If someone really wanted to track me down it would be quite easy from my posts (although expensive to fly to Japan!) LOL - hope that someone also has a detector in hand! :)

Would I post the same on a high profile Japanese metal detecting forum? (don't think there are any anyway)..... mmmmm.....maybe.....maybe not.....I would be MUCH more cautious than I am now though......and maybe my name would be e.g. 'MrYen' not 'Ian'. :)
These guys (sometimes I meet them at the beach) are part of the reasons I prefer just to show and tell on the English side of the Net and to very few Japanese also. My bucket full of trash works well for such 'meetings' at the beach. ;)
Click Here for who not to show and tell to in Japan.

Anyway, I agree with your hunch Bottomfeeder. Hope we are wrong, but the way the Internet is going, almost anything goes.
And I for one certainly love to read and see the posts of others on here, so don't like to see that change. A bit of long-term protection may be in order though. What form that takes is always open to discussion......

Just my two yen worth. HH.
MrYen :) @ the land of ninja and things.
