Question for all posters on this forum....

Are we cutting our own throats by posting all these finds, and closeup glamour shots of them?
Will this eventually cause us grief?
I'd like opinions on this.
I have a keen sense of trouble before it approaches, and I smell something bad if we continue to "flaunt" all these finds.
What do you good folks think??

Stingy is a form of OCD to me. Those that are tight lipped about there spots and finds, will do more harm than good for this hobby. That behavior also spills over in other areas of their life also, and I have no use for that type person.
Those that see some of the great finds on the various forums and get into the "hobby" with visions of sugar plums going on in their heads, don't last long. Everyone who has spent time in this hobby, knows the hard work it takes to produce a good find.
I've avoided clubs since the last one I belonged to in 86, because I saw more of that behavior there than with the "lone wolves".
A ran into Amy M.(Shadow Amy) a few weeks ago, and we were discussing things like this. She came out with a great cliche. She called it "Maturing in the hobby".

Hey Bottomfeeder i agree with u 100% if everyone continues to post all their GREAT finds," Good News Travel Like Wild Fire" and we will have more company than we want on the beaches I believe for sure. My hunting buddy Gulfhunter has been after me to post what i find and i have been holding back i don't want or need any more company at the beach, i believe most hunters will agree but getting them to just show their junk finds will be a chore,

Coastwise

I agree Houndawgg, let the goodie pics flow!! E-bay is full of used 'tectors that people used once or twice and didn't come up with "The good stuff the first time out" and became disenchanted with detecting after realizing it ain't easy. Most people don't realize the time and labor required, not to mention money, to get those few treaures that are posted on the forums. Post your pics, Bottomfeeder, we'd love to see what treasures you've recovered. And don't worry, the loot is constantly being replenshed by all the sun-worshippers.

and then claim that they are the original owners and the items should be returned to them. I'm ok with that if they ARE the person who lost the item, but I'm worried people may lie and say a nice item is theirs. Posting pics with dates and locations makes it easier for these frauds to try a scam.

Barney Fifes, and especially the "archies' who would use it to portray us as a bunch of cultural and historical bandits. Yaddayaddayadda. like what are they?
We even pay those thieves to plunder our own property!!
I enjoy the pics too. But in this day and age!!

i do not think we have anyone like that

i know of alot of folks who only post their meager stuff and not there good stuff toooo

i for one do not post my g r e a t stuff...............i just save it in a pile with all of the other stuff and sometimes i just jump in with it and throw it up in the air like scruge McDuck does.

i think we are okay posting our stuff..............

got me going, I guess. I'd say post, but limit any info to anyone who seems a little TOO interested, or curious.
Example:
Wow! Cool diamond ring man. You the man!. Where'd you find it??
(Unsuspecting detectorist) "Thanks, I found it at the low tide line in front of the Riff Raff resort."
(Nosy guy) Cool!
Phone call to local authorities. "Wah, I lost my diamond ring in front of the Riff Raff resort, and this bad metal detector guy is showing it on the internet!! Help me, I'm a "victim"!!
Barney Fife guy: "all right metal detector dude, up against the wall, empty the pouch." Wow, look at all the "stolen" items here! Cuff him guys!:?:

I post few of my finds, I'm lucky tho in a way, I live in a small community where a jury of my peers will give me a fair shake....Nuff said..HH...Geo

sand hunter is not going to take the beating we surfhunters take. he said it was hard work, heck that is understatment...............anytime u get in the big waves said chest deep to neck deep and work, it is no fun..................b u t the lure of gold does strange things to us..............i worked the deep surf all day on sunday and got knocked over twice, had my headphones knocked off more times than i could count. i feel like i have been run over by a bulldozer today.

they can have all the visions they want, but there are only a few of us out deep.

granted a lot of nice finds are made shallow, but

gear is not the same, more $$$$$ than most want to spend...........have to have big scoop, hard on shoulders................dawg said ebay and he is correct..........most do not last long and do not want to put in the time required for the surf gold.

i like that...................:) :)

I've read all of the posts up until this point and I will say this:

- I have thought about this as well.

- I agree it's a matter of time until it goes sour on somebody.

- I agree that if everybody stops doing it that kind of ruins it for a lot of us that detect... the "sharing of the glory", the knowledge, as well as the "hope of what could be" for that next hunt.

I have clicked that "Post" button with some degree of trepidation each time I've made picture-post of some great find. So what is the right answer? Hmm...now you've got me wondering.

What I was told by my dealer was to never show valuables to anyone at the beach. Show 'em a pull-tab and they will leave you alone. If you need to show someone, show a fellow detectorist. If they ask me what I'm finding, I'm looking for metal, that's all they need to know.

Well said, Max isn't it wonderful to get a little surf pounding. Take 2 tylenol and post me in the morning!

using a somekind of clip rig.......snags open - good size, get them at outfitters store

and clipping on my harness

i think i am going back to the string and diaper pin..............

have a zippered right hip pocket. Anything good goes there. Junk and coins go into my velcro mesh bag on my utility strap that I hipmount my CZ-20 on. Out of sight, out of mind.
