Question about age????

I'm 41. I've wanted to MD since a kid, but just got into the hobby two months ago with a second hand Fisher Coinstrike and a F4. I'm already looking at buying other metal detectors, so I guess I'll be in for the long haul :detecting:

I'm 46, been detecting for about ten years. This is a little deceiving...although I have had a detector all this time,
I haven't used it a lot. Maybe a couple times each year. Just bought a new detector, and really want to get more into it.
I hunt in Mich. HH Dan

[size=medium]I started in 1968 in Pensacola, Florida. Did most of my hunting at Spanish Fort and Ft. Blakly,ALA. Unbelievably, it was nothing to find 250 bullets in the morning and have to go back to the car to empty out my carrying bag before I went back out hunting.. My first detector was a piece of junk," Jetco". You could have stood in a garbage can and not found it.! My next was a great detector for using in the south, a "Metrotech". I found a lot of relics with it. When I got discharged from the Navy and brought it north, (I hunt Md and WV ) it just couldn't handle the ground. I've used just about every type detector, but still like my old Whites "Eagle SL II" and Now I've started to use the new T-2, as my arm is getting just as "old" ( 59 ) as the rest of me. Funny thing about detecting, I've never been all that lucky at finding the good things but still never gave up the feeling that "what's in the next hole could be great". Metal detecting has kept my interest all these past years, a lot longer than my 1st wife did!

Started detecting in 1972. Got the idea from Popular Mechanics magazine free plans for building a "metal locator - find treasures" using a transister radio and a loop circuit.Mounted the coil on a broom stick. Well, I found a flat piece of metal 1" deep in the fields and maybe two other hunks of metal. That got me hooked and I wanted a little better machine, but money was tight so I bought the least expensive Heathkit, $69, and did great with it even tho it had only All Metal mode. Found a lot of silver coins and dug tons of tinfoil. There was very few pulltabs back in the early 70's, but chewing gum wrappers were everywhere and up to 2 -3" deep. I was out of the hobby for about 15 years, back in 4 years ago. Age 69. Retired and physically fit, so I go out at least 4 days a week. Never too old to have a passion for this hobby. Keeps me feeling young still.

Hello my fellow addicts oops I mean td'ers. I started this fascinating hobby at the great young age of 48 and now two years later am still out there at least three times a week, health and weather permitting. I started with a bh 505 from wally world and then tried out the highly hyped but under performing viper trident and mp digital pushed by a major on line retailer who shall remain nameless as they did not push the sale I just fell for the hype, I am currently vacation in the Philippines and will be back late April. I will buy a new detector then. I am looking at a dfx and a tiger shark not sure which yet as wife says I can only buy one and want to be sure I can detect the wet sand. Anyway I think the age doesn't matter as much as your attitude and how much you enjoy this wonderful hobby we are in. I love it because being in forced retirement due to back surgery, it one gives me something to do and two motivates me to get out and walk as that is the only exercise I am currently allowed to do. Anyway sorry about the rambling just wanted to give a shout out to all. Good luck and HH Ted

Hi Thadious,

The DFX is a great detector, but it is heavy.

The Tiger Shark isn't light.

If you could find a good beach machine for not

too much money, you might concider adding a

Compadre as a back-up. It is a great little performer.

Not supper deep, but it is a joy to use, and an

under rated machine. Some discover this little

machine and some of their other machines start

gathering dust. Just a thought.

HH,

(See my orig post somewhere down in the string.)
765 hits is a lot of lookers.. This hobby appears alive and well with a lot of younger guys/gals getting involved.and I think thats a good thing. There are as many reasons for taking part in this hobby as there are detector models and makes. For me its the feelings I get when sneaking up on on old coin , using all my hard earned skills to locate and identify it as something good, and then digging out what I was looking for. .If you watch an experienced and dedicated metal detectorist sniffing out a good hit, its like watching a cat with a mouse. Its a truism that you can't find what isn't there , but you will soon learn that those who work on their hunting skills consistantly find what they are looking for. . When all their skills come together to produce a good find (whatever that find may be), a look of real happiness appears. I have seen some do a little dance as I have myself. .
I recommend a Website (THEGOLDENOLDE) .to those who would like to pick up on a little basic metal detecting philosophy. The guy who originated the site is dead now but he understood this hobby and could explain it with illumination. . He recognized that there are fast hunters and slow hunters, techno hunters and one knob hunters..
One of his basic observations was
"To really enjoy this hobby you First have to get over the thought that you look like some kind of idiot doing it",
Enough of this age thing already....Go do some digging and have some fun.. Don.

I'm 29 and just started, I found an 18kt 0.345oz mens ring on my second hunt. I love this hobby!!!

:usmc:

Just a word of caution. If you love this hobby now, it will be the same even after thirty years. That's more than I can say for my first wife!

I'm 32 and have had 4 detectors...1st was a radio shack at 16 only thing I really
found was a ring at school a girl lost in a puddle, and gave it back.
The 2nd was a Garrett GTA-450 bought from Finger hut..at 22 found an old steel
tipped push pole for logging, and some old window weights.I was caught up in dating
needed $$$ so i sold it.:beers: The 3rd one I inherited after my dad died A bounty hunter
2-d 707 at 29. I used it a little and found a silver centavos.Well I have been wanting to
upgrade so I just recently bought a Bounty Hunter Land Star and trying to learn it.

I hate to disappoint all you young guys out there but I was born in 1933 which makes me the oldest poster on this question. I have only been detecting about 3 years, I sure wasted a lot of time. I have only hunted beaches and some parks but try to get out 3 or 4 times a week. Sometimes I feel like 90 and sometimes I feel like 20, but both times I have fun...Dig a Gig...Speedy

I just spotted an older than me at 77, so I'm in second place which still pays good money but who ever remembers the sencond place guy? Have fun Speedy

to turn the tables completly, i'm 17, and have been metal detecting for the last 5 years.have a sovereign xs2, and im hooked!

COINNUT you have created a monster that has taken on a life of its own. Last count over 800 hits and still climbing. Dont ever do this sort of thing again. I.m turning 78 next month, if I live that lomg, and my mouse just died in my hand from overwork.:surrender:: hh Don

Played around for a bit in the mid 70s with a "Jetco" then got away from it for years. Started again in 98 and been at it ever since. Got even more serious about it around 2000. I'll be 67 in July and figure to stay with it until I can't or they bury me.

Not real sure about who is senior, but that don't make a lot of difference. It's a wonderful Hobby ,and thats what it's all about. It is much better than getting in the lounge chair and calling it Quits. Here is my story: This coming JUNE I will be 85. I love this hobby because it keeps my Sanity. NOTE: I am full caregiver for my wife who is 91. My job is 24/7 and I love it. We have been Married 61 years. This is how I get to pursue this hobby : My wife still likes to read. SOOOO... She reads in the car while MD. I must stay in sight of the car, if she needs ANYTHING she opens the car door to alert me. Most of the time that will be the end of the hunting day. I love this arrangement.
Number one it keeps my sanity. Number two it gives both of us a chance to get out and enjoy the Sunshine here in East Tenn. So far with the DFX...DD6x10....and DD4x6 We have found 630 coins A VIETNAM service Medal and a bucket of Junk. I am still trying to find the owner of the Medal. Born June 1923. Happy hunting.....wyandotte
