New to the forum thought I would share some pix

I still want to dig with you guys!

I find the best stuff in dump's not privie's a wider selection!! I can digg a farm privy in a twenty min depending on the depth of the privy!!! I find a the lantern alway's and few whiskey bottle's and coin's . If the bottle chipped or crack it get's tossed it not worth wrapping or pic too!!!

Cool:thumbup: we dig dumps here and there but privy's are where the OLD stuff sleeps.you can find old dumps
but they are hard to come by,they are there but most times they are badly over grown and hard to locate
Here are a few pix from older dumps we did over the years.

Here are some bottles i got in a dump
behind my house ....A few black glass ales
A yellow 3 piece mold
some commons
And a scarce amber Danial Ritter Allentown hutch. This one made the whole dig.close to $1000

Nice finds! Do you hire helpers for your digs? Thats quite a hole! I know where this is a 3 seater from an old Railroad Hotel that was burned down years ago. I'm pretty sure the hotel was pre 1870's, I used to own the house next door that was built around 1872. My dog used to dig for me as his dog house bordered the hotel property. Never thought much about bottles then, wish I did, would have bought him extra treats! Thanks for sharing, Tim

No its just My friend Paul and I. Thats how it has been since the start.Where was that hotel that burnt down at? in NY? We have a big dig coming up in May,a huge 1840s hotel in Ny state. But we have to wait until the ground is thawed,I herd you guys had reallllll cold weather up there. We have a summer home in Henderson Harbor on the Harbor.

We dug a pit today it was turn of the century stuff to new for us,but I got one cool bottle from it. QUICK DEATH poison flask.with 3 embossed bugs on top.

Hi Mr Seitz, I live in the Finger Lakes Region of NY. The Hotel is located approx. 20 miles north of Watkins Glen. My family owned five properties in this small area including the hotel. The hotel was very rough and the town would not issue a permit to have it fixed or restored. When my dad was alive he owned it back then and allowed the local fire dept. to do a practice burn on it. They leveled the place and today there is a trailer there. The three seater actually bordered my place next door which is still in our family as I sold it to my daughter. My wife and I were discussing obtaining permission from the family who bought the lot from my dad. No one knows about the privy except for us as we bought the place in 1988-89 and it was fairly covered then, the new owners have only been there for about six years. It was covered with old railroad ties so no one would fall in but they have long since been covered by dirt. We know the people who now own it and believe they may give us permission. The only obstacle I see is their propane tank is fairly close to the privy. Where-abouts are you coming in the spring? If it is close enough I wouldn't mind observing to enhance my education! I have many friends here in the Mennonite community, (something like the Amish), they bought many of the farms here and I was just given permission to metal detect one north of Penn Yan, NY. Looking forward to spring! My name is Tim, nice to meet you!

Hey Tim .....
I am not sure how the dig in Ny will unfold yet,I will let you know when the time gets closer. As of now it is only my buddy and my self aloud since we had to get insurance to be on the site. Rick

Hi Rick, I understand, look forward to you posting photos though! Have fun and keep us posted. I will have to figure out some diggers for my locations as I am just not able, I may hire a couple of the Mennonite's, (something like the Amish), they are good Christian people that aren't afraid to work! We drew up a Release of Liabilty for Metal Detecting, I'll change a few words to use them for privy digs. I now have two great locations picked out, both run along the Railroad tracks, 1870 or older, one 3 seater and one 2 seater. Tim

Are the outhouses still standing? the 3 seater. If so I would stay clear of that one.:yikes:

No, these outhouses have been down for years, I happen to see the rotted 3 seat board when I owned the property next door. Then I found some railroad ties placed over the hole, that was back in 1989ish, the 2 seater had a building standing until about 8 years ago, even at that there was quite a lot of brush grown up around it and it was pretty rotted. Thanks, Tim

cool...are the holes filled in?

The 3 seater has been filled in for at least 20 years that I know of but probably well before that as 20 years ago the Hotel was barely standing to the point where the town wouldn't issue any permits to rebuild even though it should of been a preserved historic site, the 2 seater probably for no less than eight but probably much longer. I remember the 2 seater approx. 8-10 years ago was still standing although barely, and the door was hanging from one hinge. The house (a 7 bedroom), has had modern plumbing and septic for years. About 8-10 years ago they had to replace the holding tank and a new septic tank was installed. So basically that tells me the outhouse has not been used for many years even before it crumbled as the house is now on it's 2nd septic! Tim

Yeah its best when old homes got plumbing early, just say a house that was built in 1850 got plumbing in 1910 (witch some of the homes around here did) there is usually around 3 to 4 good old pits in the yard. The rule of thumb is privy's lasted 20 years give or take. The later the house got plumbing the more pits in the yard and there will be a new new one somewhere. We hate the new new ones  We like when they filled the pit in early, one got a few that where filled in in the 1850s 70s 60s thats when your day is going to be GREAT! :surprised: because you will find old stuff right from the get go,maybe a few new pieces on the very top from when the pit was sinking, but after that its alllll old.

Why do you have cabin feaver? dont you dig in the winter? Id dig in hell if I could get back out.:hot:
