Hi, I'm in western Mass and I don't think I've ever seen that deep of a hole. Wanted to take up privy digging, but I don't know if I would have known to go that deep. Are they always that far down???

No coin. They don't normally go that deep. This one happen to be from a very rich homestead,The owner was the flour King of Allentown and had the money to dig it deep,so they didn't have to clean it,and kept the smell way down.
Average pits around here are 6 to 10 feet sometime 15 is the house is big. We just dug one today, and it was only 5 feet wide & 6 foot deep. here is a pic of the hole and a Drakes plantation Bitters we got from it. I will post some of the better stuff we dug later. Thanks Rick

Hi, That quite a dig you had. I take it you're from PA? Wondering what you offer the landowner, if anything? Want to try it with some abandoned colonial sites that went up through the 1850's. I think if they were abandoned before 1830, the pickings would be slim. Would have to entice the property owners with something I would imagine? What do you think? Wondering how the coppers coins fair that deep in the ground. Are they really corroded like the kind we find closer to the surface?

Well it all depends on what type of people they are,Most are just plain old nice people and let us dug,we offer them bottles but most don't even want them, but we say we will fix the hole (better) then it was originally, because most times there is a slight sink in the yard, when we are done we fill it in,and keep coming back until it is done sinking.Sometimes we do odds and ends around there yard, but like i said most times its( go ahead and dig). This last guy was a renter he said go dig don't worry about it,he said give me a pack of smokes and its all good lol sometimes it works that way.But either way,you have to knock on doors and sell your hobby,or you wont dig privy's.Take with the No's with the yeses and keep on knocking.

As to the coins ,the ones we find are always pitted bad.the last one was a 1804 half cent draped bust. pretty well beat up.

Heres a cool little pot from the last pit 1857 (scarce)

Thats how it goes in the game of privy digging, but (Most) of the better bottles in this pit where whole. The elep Zone, the amber Master ink the strap sides.the green sodas ect the pottery was mostly broken, but even with that we had whole dishes. That pit was insane! :yikes:we will dig some crazy stuff this spring. The bottle gods tell me so.:yikes:
