NEW GARRETT AT PRO FAULTY PLEASE HELP

I wear sandals , no watch no mobile phone.
Garrett sent me a new ATP and I will receive it within the next days.

Hi maliaros

Just something I noticed here with the pictures you posted which may or may not help, but worth a look at, is your Coil Wire Plug-In Connection.

It doesn't appear to be straight and there is something Dark between the Male and Female part where they join like the O ring.

Either way maliaros, that coil wire is wrapped "way" to tight at the plug-in and could be be pulling on those wires from the inside.

Might I suggest you unwind the coil wire a couple of turns from the Plug-In to give more slack to it.

I use Velcro on either end of my coil wire to prevent pulling or stretching and works very well. Might be something to consider with yours maliaros.

Keep us posted and I'm sure others will chime in if they can, thanks. :)

And just to clear things up here about salt water, I live on the West Coast and use my AT Pro in all conditions including Salt Water and don't have "any" issues when I'm using the stock coil. The new 5X8 coil is in fact a bit skidish and my remedy to that is back off 2 notches on Sensitivity, Ground Balance, then bring it back up to Full Sensitivity or what you can get for your area before it starts chirping, mine is full with no chirping.

Just to clarify as well here, Is I don't use any notching-discrimination or Iron Audio, I run mine in Pro Zero "Wide Open" no problems in any Fresh Water-Salt Water-Snow-Ice-Hot Rocks-Black Sand with the stock 8.5X11 Coil (none) in my Area. Other areas can be different I'm sure, but to have as many problems with Slat Water that I see on this forum is really quite Baffling to me personally (but that's just me).

I know the AT Pros can handle a lot of conditions thrown at it, mine can (GB as low as 52 in Salt Water and as high as 93 in High Minerals) with no issues.

maliaros

Also check your batteries, my friend has an Ace 250 and he had lots of chirping from cheap no name batteries. He has since switched to Energizers (I use Dura-Cells) and he doesn't have any issues now. Someone else also mentioned rechargeable batteries can and has caused problems for him and he has switched back to Dura-Cells and no more problems for him either.

Just some a comment and suggestions here to look at maliaros that have caused chirping problems with the AT Pros (and Ace250).

:)

Thanks for the info.
Things are getting more complicated now!
The dealer call me today to go and pick the replacement unit.
I went and took the machine( a hole new and unopened package) manufactured 2 week ago.
I noticed that the first ATP was still there at his shop and after I asked him he told me that they just sent him the new but they didn't told me yet what to do with the first( send it at Germany or USA)

So I took the new unit tonight and head to the nearest beach about 15 miles from my house, park ,assembled the ATP and ops same shit deferend detector.
Again is impossible to ground balance.
Am out of clues

Am out of clues, I have to wait until the dealer send the first ATP to service and if its faulty then the new is also faulty.

Hi maliaros

If you picked the new detector up from a dealer, why not let him have a look at it then to make sure everything is the way it should be.

Also try another area besides the beach to see if their is any difference in your ground balancing problem.

Did you use the same battery Name/type in both machines or different ones in each?

Did you lube the "O" ring that the coil wire has before screwing it in? I use Die-Electric Grease on mine, it is "very" difficult (if not impossible) to properly get a good connection with the coil wire plug-in with out some kind of lubrication. It took me 4 tries when I got my AT Pro (with Die-Electric grease) to get that pug-in to seat properly (and I leave mine assembled).

The best thing to do at this point maliaros is to just leave the machine alone for awhile and just "think back" on things when you put it together. Was it done correctly? Did I follow the manual correctly?

This is the way I do things when they start to get overwhelming. Most times than not, I find the Answer/Solution to the problem. That's what needs to be done here before your final conclusions with the AT Pro.

I'm sure others will chime in if they can. Let us know how things work out maliaros. Thanks. :)

PS: Do you have "any metal" items on you or even a cell phone that could possibly cause interference? I have steal toes and my machine picks them up very easily and why I have to have my AT Pro extended almost all the way out to avoid that and that's almost 2 feet from coil to shoes.

The little steel loops in your shoes will make the AT Pro sound off as well.

Just some things check at this point. :)

I have made a video and sent to Garrett that showing the exact behavior of the unit during the ground balancing.
the only thing i noticed and can be the issue is that the coil connector just can't be inserted full inside.
have a look on the picture.

sorry

Looks like the connecter attaching the coil to the machine should be going in much further. Are the pins actually aligned???? They can be a pain sometimes.....but that just may be your problem----Dan

The connector on the box and coil cable on my machine is black plastic.

the one in the picture appeares to be metal, has garrett been using metal connectors lately?

Hi maliaros

As Idaho dan mentioned, the connector doesn't appear to be seating properly.

Did you use Silicone/ Die - Electric grease to help seat it? (important to use on that connector).

As for the color difference, mine is black and as ralph mentioned, his is black as well. I think it's because you have the International Version. Mine is (and maybe ralphs) are the Standard AT Pro version.

I looked at the Video maliaros (thanks for posting it) and I noticed the Ground Balancing Sound to be a bit different than mine, but once you finished and started swinging the coil, it was quiet and hitting a target without to much of a problem and I didn't here any chirping while you were swinging.

I noticed you still have the Discrimination set to 35, might I suggest you just leave everything off for right now until you get the balancing sorted out?

Set everything to Zero/0, then ground balance (pump up and down "slowly" and don't touch the ground), the coil needs to be close to the ground before releasing the ground balancing button, then apply the settings you want (or just leave everything at 0 for now).

Your AT Pro is hitting targets just fine maliaros and it's quiet after the ground balance. Stay in the area you ground balanced to. I noticed after your ground balance for the wet sand, you walked straight over to the waters edge and didn't ground balance for that. When your that close to very different conditions in your area, you need to GB every time for it.
GB- for wet sand, GB- for waters edge or water.

I think the GB maybe new to you and where you may have to get used to GB properly.
-Pump the coil up and down slowly,
- Don't touch the ground at any time while GB
--Finish the GB just above the ground (swinging hieght)

Once everything is sorted out (Coil connection seated properly, GB done slowly), your going to have a much better and much deeper metal detector than your Ace 350 that's for sure.

Please keep us updated, thanks. :)

i have spent all afternoon to fit the connector the best i can and to set the coil cable.
then i went again to the beach to do the test and unfortunately i had the same results.
the thing i notice is that if i manually set the GB in low number and then auto GB in a spot that requires a high number to get quiet the auto GB works fine.
the auto GB works fine in 70s-80s-90s range if these numbers are needed.
Please view the pictures.

Hi maliaros

It really doesn't matter how long you spend on the machine to make it right maliaros, it's doing it right the first time that gets things fixed.

-Did you add Some non conducting lubricant like Silicone grease or Die-Electric grease (same thing but an automotive name for cars that works the same)?

-Might I suggest cutting all those tie wraps off as they all have metal in them and it's hard on the coil cable and very restrictive.

-Velcro is what most people use to hold the coil cable in place (including myself) and is much more suited for quick coil changes and does allow some give to the coil cable without binding it.

-Some people do use Electricians tape about 4-6" from each end of the cable which allows the shaft to be adjusted if necessary but Velcro seems to be the best overall.

-What kind and what name of batteries are you using in your AT Pro?

Thanks.:)

Hello and thanks for the response.
I put silicone grease every time I remove and insert the connectors, with or without the cable ties the result is the same so yes I will remove them and I have bought Velcro from the big auctions site.
The batteries I use are the ones that shipped from garrett with the detector (energizer alkaline).

Cheers.

Hi maliaros

I don't know if you have seen the Garrett AT Pro videos, but I came across one that may help a bit on Ground Balancing. I have watched all of the Garrett Instructional Videos a few times myself and they have been a great help for me in understanding the AT Pro that I have.

Sensitivity and Ground Balance:

AT Pro International Instruction Videos:

AT Pro Instruction Videos:

Every time I watch these videos, I learn something new from them. :)

That connector in your picture is not totally seated M..
Hold that straight piece of connector with one hand and move it up down left right in very small increments,
you should find a spot where that nut will become very free to tighten some more.
Myself! I use a pair of pliers but very very easily bring that nut home and then stop.

Thanks for the response maliaros, as knightsquad mentioned as well, the plug-in doesn't look seated.

I'm glad you are using the Silicone grease, this makes life a whole lot easier with that plug-in being such a tight fit. Keeps thing water proof as well.

Their was mention of the "Color" of the plug-in being Brass looking instead of Black. I thought the International version might be brass, but saw a couple International AT Pros that were Black as well. You mentioned this is a very new machine off the assembly line a couple of weeks ago, you should send that picture to Garrett where the plug-in is Brass and appears to be not seated properly for their inspection.

I think Garrett will be able to see what's been done here and give you a good analysis if their is something odd with that fitting.

Thanks for the response maliaros, I know you will get this sorted out.

As for the batteries, Energizers are good, My friend uses them in his Ace 250 and I use Dura Cells in my AT Pro. Both have a good and reliable rating to them and what I would recommend staying with (those two name brands). Dura Cells are my preferred batteries, they seem to last a bit longer than the rest in my machine.

PS: One other thing here maliaros.
Coil Covers, do you have one? They are a great investment if you don't. I bought my coil cover shortly after I got my AT Pro and I'm very glad I did. Something to look into if you don't have one yet.

Please keep us updated maliaros, thanks. :)

i have a coil cover but i remove it since the first ATP and people told me that in beach hunting can cause issues if sand and saltwater is trapped within.
now am thinking about visiting the dealer and take the first ATP body to test with the second's coil. i will spend another 30$ in fuel and 2 hours in traffic but i believe it worth to give it a try since i don't remember to have connectivity issues with the first.
my luck is that i am the only ATP owner in the island and i have nobody to call and compare and the dealer is a very good and helpful guy but he don't know even where is the on-off button in the machine.

cheers.

Ok, if you think it will make a difference.

That's a good point about the coil cover.

My coil covers ( 8.5x11 and 5x8 ) are Siliconed in place and water tight all the way around and not removable.

Let us know how things work out maliaros, thanks. :)
