I've been trying to figure out what was going on with the headphones and their not being able to shut down the speaker on the CTX 3030. I happened to read a short note from Gordon, the field tester from the UK, and he suggested that the "sleeve" wasn't being recognized by the detector when the plug was inserted. For those not familiar with the terminlogy, the plug has three sections, Tip, Ring and Sleeve. Naturally, Tip is the tip. Ring is the middle section and Sleeve is the section toward the cord. Anyway, I got out my ohm meter and traced all the leads down on my Gray Ghosts. With the toggle up, I traced the black cord wire going to the Sleeve, and the red and white were both connected to the Ring and Tip. That puts a direct short on the red and white wires. Only a guess, but this may be how the compensator switch shares audio signal with both sides of the headphones. I flipped the switch down, and now had the black and white wires connected to the Sleeve and the Tip, and the red wire went to the Ring. Knowing that I needed to keep the sleeve in the mix all by itself, and recognizing that red and white wires each should go to both speakers, I elected to use the headphones with the toggle in the up position, leaving the black wire connected to the Sleeve by itself. That now meant I had to separate the red and white wires, so they weren't being shorted when the toggle is up. I made several attempts at taking them through the volume control, but to no avail. What I ended up doing is clipping the wires inside the earcup, connecting the red wire from the cord to the red wire of each headphone speaker, and the white wire of the cord to the white wire of each headphone speaker. I insulated the new connections and put the foam and ear muff back on the headphones. When I plugged them into the CTX 3030 with the toggle up, the headphone icon appeared in the corner of the display, and I had sound from the headphones and not through the speaker of the Detector! :clapping: When I flipped the toggle to the down position, the headphone icon went away on the display, and I had volume from both the headphones and the speaker. Apparently, the Sleeve lead is needed to signal the detector that the headphones were plugged in, and to shut off the speaker.

I don't suggest or recommend that anyone try this. It didn't take much skill. And there may be some sort of adapter that could make this change for you, without tearing into your headphones. I'm now convinced that the problem involves the compensation switch of the headphones. By removing the "short" between the red and white speaker wires, and positioning the toggle so the Sleeve lead was allowed to signal the detector that the headphones were plugged in, the problem was solved. Like I said, there may be a device that makes this change for you...I don't know. But I know that this worked on my Gray Ghosts, and it did not affect their use on my E-TRAC or X-TERRA. HH Randy

Wow Randy awesome. I am guessing everything still works with the wireless unit also? The only reason I kept the module on the back of the detector was in case I had wireless issues in the field it would be a good backup to be able to plug in direct. It was concerning me about getting sand in the jack hole anyway so for now I am going to remove the 1/4" jack from the machine and put it in a bag with a mono plug adapter for emergencies. It may be really lucky with minelab that they use the waterproof to 1/4" connector on the machines if that turns out to be where a fix lies (if minelab does anything) Thanks for all of your help

If you two guys are as fun & funny on a hunt as you are on the Forum--I DEFINITELY want to go on a hunt with y'all!!---I'll even let the two of you split the expense of my first class air fare to get there, so one of you doesn't get stuck with the whole bill.----Do feel there is a bit of a descrepancy in the car color though as it was mentioned as being a "pink Lamborghini" when Ray stated that it in fact (only) had pink pin stripes!---Perhaps it is a two tone (darker color- shade) pink?--Colors can be deceiving at times--eye perception etc.! :lmfao:-------This blindfold "thing" is still bugging me!---Can't we just drive to the hunt site at night in my (grey) CRV?----Be a nice break in the routine & nobody but Ray would know where we were at nohow!!!---------Del----------P.S. Bob, I'll even let you use my Pro Golds----can't beat that deal!!

I think it is the wrong ear for seated quarters by the way

Just thinking ahead Ray. Someday I'll be as old as you and might need both ears to hear well enough.

Until then, I will try the other ear and see if that solves my seated quarter problem:thumbup:

Shoot, Bob has never even had a speeding ticket.I have to drive much more conservatively when he is along to keep his nerves calmed so as not to get an unfair advantage once we start hunting :twodetecting: Then after me being such a concerned host he has the nerve to guzzle a Monster energy drink and wolf down some chocolate cup cakes for an extreme energy/sugar rush so he can race ahead of me and hit the silver hot spots first......
I am thinking it will only get worse now that he will be using the new sleek, state of the art CTX3030 and I will be hobbling along with an old school E-Trac :)

The reason I drive so conservatively is because I have precious cargo on board....ME!!! And yes, 40 years old and never had a speeding ticket. Dang proud of it. Ray should be thanking me for all the money he has saved on speeding tickets since he is so considerate to my pre hunt nerves.

The Monster energy drink/ cupcake combo is a necessity hunting with Ray. He is like the Energizer bunny and can hunt sun up to sun down without ever taking a break. It still amazes me even after hunting with him the past couple years.

I may have some color blindness, on hunt days the only color I care to see is silver!!

And yes Del, we do have fun together. The finds we make are just the icing on the cake. Ray is a good hearted person and I'm proud to call him my friend.

I know they are Bob ("finds just being icing on the cake").-----There's a whole lot more to this great hobby than just the finds we make--and the friends & friendships we make along the way are right up there on the top of the list.----You two guys have developed a friendship and have had some great hunts together that you will both remember for years to come.------Lord willing, there are MANY more enjoyable hunts coming up for both of you in the future also.--------Del

Similar problem on my side with GG, but only when pinpointing  I did not touch compatibility switch yet.

I heard back from Detector Pro (Gray Ghost), they mentioned the adapter to me and they told me that Minelab is aware of the problem. It looks like they are in touch with some of the headphone manufacturers, so we will probably hear something soon. No further information.

Just found this from Minelab. They specify headphones with "Standard" Stereo or Mono wiring. Which means you can use any stereo or mono Audio heaphones with the proper reducing adapter, including earbuds.

Many of the 3rd party headphones did customize their compatibility switch wiring to suit the needs of detectors, and instead of following the normal Audio Mono wiring of connecting the speakers to both the ring and sleeve, they opted to tie both to only one, depending on how the Manufacturer chose to wire their headphone jack. Standard Mono wiring would have worked, as my Rats prove, as I can use them in both major types of detector headphone jacks, and they do not have a compatibility switch.
