hey spdnj

thanks for the detailed update hope your right that a firmware patch can fix this problem, don't see its anyone's fault but minelab all the phones have been around long before this detector so hope your right that the module on the detector can be replaced or a patch either way i am not happy but this what happens buying early before the bugs are ironed out.

thanks again!

BP

Really? You expect Minelab to make sure every make and model of 1/4" headphones around the world works with their machine?

It could be the way the jack is wired, or it may be the impedance is not triggering the speaker circuit to cut off, or a combination of both.

Here's a chart that shows the 3 possible ways detector jacks can be wired. It seems coincidental that both Minelab and Garrett are wired the same and both the CTX and AT Pro/Gold are having the same issue with some headphones and the 1/4 to waterproof adapter..

I'd give a stereo to mono adapter a try just to see if that is a possible temporary workaround.

so the Garrett AT pro can use land and water phones too ? must be something going on then, guess it means i have to use those krap i mean koss phones till they fix it :rage:

do they make 1/4 to 1/4 stereo to mono plugs will have a look around anyway

Thanks Randy. I just tried my new headphones and they don't work either. They are Killer B (model - Stinger) Also, as we already know, the Grey Ghost Deep Woods don't work either. I've tried every switch combination. This is frustrating for sure.

Grey ghost ultimate, Grey ghost NDT, and Rattlers won't turn off the speaker either.

I've been trying to figure out what was going on with the headphones and their not being able to shut down the speaker on the CTX 3030. I happened to read a short note from Gordon, the field tester from the UK, and he suggested that the "sleeve" wasn't being recognized by the detector when the plug was inserted. For those not familiar with the terminlogy, the plug has three sections, Tip, Ring and Sleeve. Naturally, Tip is the tip. Ring is the middle section and Sleeve is the section toward the cord. Anyway, I got out my ohm meter and traced all the leads down on my Gray Ghosts. With the toggle up, I traced the black cord wire going to the Sleeve, and the red and white were both connected to the Ring and Tip. That puts a direct short on the red and white wires. Only a guess, but this may be how the compensator switch shares audio signal with both sides of the headphones. I flipped the switch down, and now had the black and white wires connected to the Sleeve and the Tip, and the red wire went to the Ring. Knowing that I needed to keep the sleeve in the mix all by itself, and recognizing that red and white wires each should go to both speakers, I elected to use the headphones with the toggle in the up position, leaving the black wire connected to the Sleeve by itself. That now meant I had to separate the red and white wires, so they weren't being shorted when the toggle is up. I made several attempts at taking them through the volume control, but to no avail. What I ended up doing is clipping the wires inside the earcup, connecting the red wire from the cord to the red wire of each headphone speaker, and the white wire of the cord to the white wire of each headphone speaker. I insulated the new connections and put the foam and ear muff back on the headphones. When I plugged them into the CTX 3030 with the toggle up, the headphone icon appeared in the corner of the display, and I had sound from the headphones and not through the speaker of the Detector! :clapping: When I flipped the toggle to the down position, the headphone icon went away on the display, and I had volume from both the headphones and the speaker. Apparently, the Sleeve lead is needed to signal the detector that the headphones were plugged in, and to shut off the speaker.

I don't suggest or recommend that anyone try this. It didn't take much skill. And there may be some sort of adapter that could make this change for you, without tearing into your headphones. I'm now convinced that the problem involves the compensation switch of the headphones. By removing the "short" between the red and white speaker wires, and positioning the toggle so the Sleeve lead was allowed to signal the detector that the headphones were plugged in, the problem was solved. Like I said, there may be a device that makes this change for you...I don't know. But I know that this worked on my Gray Ghosts, and it did not affect their use on my E-TRAC or X-TERRA. HH Randy

Headphones wired for a true stereo is the key. My DMC IIB(custom) headphones function properly on the module and the detector plug. Randy has it spot on :)

for those not inclined to pull their headphones apart or buy headphones not made for metal detectors what do we do?

BP

The detector comes with a set of Koss UR 30's that will work just fine with the CTX 3030. If you use certain brands that have the compensation switch, know ahead of time that the particular make and model may not shut off the detector's speaker. Now, having read and/or contributed to most of the posts on this forum, you already knew that, didn't you. :nono:

It's not a flick of a switch. I have adjusted all switches on my head phones and there is still sound coming out from the detector speakers. When I plug the Sun Ray head phones into the detector there isn't an icon symbol on the tool bar showing that they are plugged into it. I :rage:plugged in the stock head phones that came with the detector and they worked perfectly.

that's great but i believe its not good enough and am sure i am not the only one who feels this way when lots of people using brand name phones get this detector and go off to use it and it doesn't work minelab are going to have to do something 90% of people use the phones that do not work on the CTX 3030 so they will have to do something to fix this.

anyway time will tell but i can guarantee by the time 2 weeks is up there going to be a lot of unhappy people.

Here is my explanation.

In the meantime, know that Minelab, Ralph at SunRay and Gary at DetectorPro have all been contacted regarding this matter. I don't know if they will have a solution or if there is already an adapter available??? But now that we know what the issue is, it shouldn't be difficult to remedy it. HH Randy

Why is Minelab going to have to do something? They are providing headphones. The Name Brand phones are just simply wired differently than the CTX jack.
I own SunRay Pro Golds as well, but it sounds like they work with the wireless module.

You have several options in front of you and all you can do is come up with..... but what if this or what if that........but that's not good enough......but it's all Minelab's fault..... but I'll never use the GPS ....but I wanted a lighter detector.... but why is it so heavy..... Tell you what, you want another solution? Cancel the order on your CTX 3030 and let someone buy it who will appreciate what it does. Not complain about what it doesn't do. Based on the context of your posts, you will never be happy with it anyway.

And in what could likely to be my last response to you........You said a few days ago that you were a Michael Moore fan. Why don't you have Mikey ask the President to implement a "dollars for detectors" program, similar to the "cash for clunkers" that was so successful? :clapping: Then you can have a free detector! Socialism! :crylol: Now that is the way to fix problems. Why didn't I think of this sooner? It's Brilliant I tell ya! Absolutely Brilliant!

If you look at the chart that I posted, Nautilus is wired for regular home style stereo audio headphones.

I wish my CTX had arrived. I have a good assortment of mono/stereo adapters on hand that I could try out, as well as a pair of Jolly rogers, Rats, and regular stereo headphones.
