I've been trying to figure out what was going on with the headphones and their not being able to shut down the speaker on the CTX 3030. I happened to read a short note from Gordon, the field tester from the UK, and he suggested that the "sleeve" wasn't being recognized by the detector when the plug was inserted. For those not familiar with the terminlogy, the plug has three sections, Tip, Ring and Sleeve. Naturally, Tip is the tip. Ring is the middle section and Sleeve is the section toward the cord. Anyway, I got out my ohm meter and traced all the leads down on my Gray Ghosts. With the toggle up, I traced the black cord wire going to the Sleeve, and the red and white were both connected to the Ring and Tip. That puts a direct short on the red and white wires. Only a guess, but this may be how the compensator switch shares audio signal with both sides of the headphones. I flipped the switch down, and now had the black and white wires connected to the Sleeve and the Tip, and the red wire went to the Ring. Knowing that I needed to keep the sleeve in the mix all by itself, and recognizing that red and white wires each should go to both speakers, I elected to use the headphones with the toggle in the up position, leaving the black wire connected to the Sleeve by itself. That now meant I had to separate the red and white wires, so they weren't being shorted when the toggle is up. I made several attempts at taking them through the volume control, but to no avail. What I ended up doing is clipping the wires inside the earcup, connecting the red wire from the cord to the red wire of each headphone speaker, and the white wire of the cord to the white wire of each headphone speaker. I insulated the new connections and put the foam and ear muff back on the headphones. When I plugged them into the CTX 3030 with the toggle up, the headphone icon appeared in the corner of the display, and I had sound from the headphones and
not through the speaker of the Detector!
When I flipped the toggle to the down position, the headphone icon went away on the display, and I had volume from both the headphones and the speaker. Apparently, the Sleeve lead
is needed to signal the detector that the headphones were plugged in, and to shut off the speaker.
I don't suggest or recommend that anyone try this. It didn't take much skill. And there may be some sort of adapter that could make this change for you, without tearing into your headphones. I'm now convinced that the problem involves the compensation switch of the headphones. By removing the "short" between the red and white speaker wires, and positioning the toggle so the Sleeve lead was allowed to signal the detector that the headphones were plugged in, the problem was solved. Like I said, there may be a device that makes this change for you...I don't know. But I know that this worked on my Gray Ghosts, and it did not affect their use on my E-TRAC or X-TERRA. HH Randy
