Metal detecting illegal on high school grounds.....???

It's public property. They can't do anything. If they have proof you made the holes and caused a problem. Yes. Otherwise fair game. Atleast in Michigan.

In the city ,and or county, in your district. It depends how it is set up who owns the land in each district. By the fact the Board owns the land it in fact is not public property , It is public funded property.Usually if not always funded by Home owners taxes in the city or county, Again depending on how your system is set up.

Owned by the board of education. It is in fact titled property.... Open to students, and invited events ( Basketball etc to the public.) Plays, bake sales, or any event the school board sanctions and allows.

As has been mentioned, I would, and do, stay off school yards during the week. I, however, have no problem hunting them on weekends when few if anyone is around. I don't ask permission to hunt on city property. That only invites a no when there are no restrictions on the books prohibiting detecting. HH jim tn

It is public property. Hence PUBLIC schools. I have had the cops called and there was nothing they could do. I was not causing any trouble so no reason to make me leave. They called before even talking to me. No problems since then.

They can restrict hours and kick you off/restrict what you do if destructive or disruptive etc etc

I have gone out in the summer months and detected at schools. I have however talked to the school district and they cannot find any laws that say no. they just want to be sure you do not destroy the property. (schools in Florida)

I love this hobby but if I seen some guy detecting the school yard while my kids where at school I would be concerned. Not in any way saying you would do anything wrong but you never know some of the sickos out there. And you have to admit a beeping detector would draw little kids making them easy targets. So I would say talk to the superintendent and get permission for when school is out. Let's say a Sunday when there is less likely a sports event or kids present.
