I thought I would throw this question at you>

I got my first detector in 1969 and although it would only go maybe three inches deep on a coin, finding 100 coins in a day hunting schools, parks and playgrounds that had never had a detector in them wasn't a problem. Also dug a lot of trash as the detector would null on iron but detected everything else, not as bad as it would seem though as there wasn't nearly as much trash as there is now. I would be lucky to get 100 coins in a month hunting those same parks, schools and playgrounds now with any detector:(.
 
Excuse me, I don't mean to doubt your integrity; but did I understand you correctly when you stated that you found 16 coins seperatley in 18 minutes?
Did you mean that you located, pinpointed the target, dug up and located the coin in the dirt you dug up, sixteen times in eighteen minutes?
That means you averaged out doing ALL of the above in just a fraction over 1 minute per hole. Now that's what I call some kind of a record.
Once again, no offence; just trying to understand how that could happen.
 
The most I ever found was 40 zincs in an area of about 2 square feet. They were covered with just a bit of mud, but many were visually identified without any pinpointing or digging. Did not take long to get them all. Should have left them.

I actually had that happen to me also at a soccer field. I just sat on the ground and moved coil around and yes it was all pennies! Did not count them but I left before I found them all! I went back the next day....and yes the last 10-15 were also pennies:lol: Oh well I dig pennies also...they help my average but not my back!
 
Kay Modgling, the former Grande Dame of metal detecting, found enough clad in a four year stretch to pay cash for a new Ford Pinto.

It can be done if many are surface coins and you did little or no digging. I had a site where I used my Sovereign with the Sun Ray probe at and started getting nickles with several in one sweep. Some were 3 and 4 in one spot and some were on top of the ground and some as deep as 3 inches. I started giving them to the kids following me as I didn't know it would be that many, but got 167 in around a hour at the most. I figured what this area was a coin hunt for the kids and when done someone had used a detector and disc out the pull tabs and nickles as I don't think I got any other coin other then the nickles. Once I got down on the ground I just used my Probe to find 5 to 8 at a time.
It was fun giving these to the kids and I am sure they will never forget it either.
If anyone reads the Explorer forum I hunted with James ND at a fairgrounds in MN and I was there for about 4 hours and had 88 coins while James got 305 if I remember right in the 10 hours he was there.6 of them were merc dimes and 2 barber dimes plus 34 Wheaties and the rest were new coins.
Most of the time it is not like this, but there is places that will have a lot of coins in with most of them new.

I visit a lot of forums regularly and I agree with some here that a few claims are a bit outrageous. It's fairly easy after a while to get a feeling for who is on the level, regardless of their finds, and who is BS. One man on a major forum comes to mind: he consistently finds more, rarer and more valuable items on a daily basis than nearly all the other forum members combined. Nearly all his coin posts are of key dates and of the rarest varieties, and rare Colonial artifacts in areas that had precious little Colonial activity. His posted silver is always Seateds, Draped Busts or earlier.

Well, maybe it's for real. I don't know. I know some really good claims are true. But in all my years of searching I've found exactly ONE Seated, NO Draped Busts and mighty few Barbers. My silver seems to be Mercs & Roosies, with an occasional silver Mexican coin. Maybe he does his research and has some really good sites, but the serious eastern relic hunters on most forums don't find a tenth the good stuff this guy does.

My daily coin finds have been a high of around 60....mostly from tot-lots and mostly zincs. I can't imagine digging turf and plugging to get 100 or 200 coins. Two or three bucks in clad in a long day is about my best, and I feel good to get enough for "beer and batteries".

Marc I try to average 50 coins at least a trip, I usually average 2-4 hours hunting. We have tons of public parks here and can never imagine
running out of places to hunt. My problem is it is almost all clad, parks mainly build dirt added from 1930-1950. But I know what you are talking about!

Usually at least half of my finds are pennies, for me most tot lots seem to produce 50-80 cents and waste over an hour of my time. But I do continue to hit them. Makes me wonder when these people go in tot lots for 30 minutes and show pictures of gold bracelets, rings and so on. Do I believe??? Like you said maybe it is true...guess that is why I still hit the tot lots I am sure sooner or later i will have a nice find in one. My best tot lot find lately was a sac dollar!!! <(last year) That is it, did find over$4 in change over 30 dimes directly under a jungle gym (for texdon) > they were separate and those also included some on surface. :laugh: Even though my counts average 50-100 coins each time I go out, usually average out to only $3-$5!! And I am sore too!!!:rofl: Well have a good one
 
Gregg....I hit the local tot-lots here regularly, and some of my best jewelry finds have been there. I did pull out a nice 14K gold bracelet (broken chain) once, and a few gold religious medallions. I've found a lot more silver jewelry there, though. LOTS of junk rings and other kiddie jewelry, as well as enough clad to keep me in batteries. I've found more adult gold items in the end-zones of soccer fields.

All the silver coins I've found have been from older house sites or from the abandoned dump-site (1940's). Most of the gold in our local parks is undoubtedly still there, because nobody wants to put in the effort to sift through a ton of pull-tabs to find it! :rofl:

On the "my toy vs. your toy" thing: A friend and I were out at a park, I with my MXT, he with his Minelab Sovereign. His little boy was with us with his little $99 Walmart Special. Well, little Timmy got a signal on his Walmart and started digging. His dad and I went over the signal and both decided it was trash, but Timmy was insistent on digging up the pulltab. As it turned out, Timmy found a gorgeous gold ring with a huge ruby, six little rubies and six little diamonds. We found a handful of clad for the day!

I have the MXT and a Minelab Quattro, but over the years I've found more coins with a Bounty Hunter Lonestar than with the other two combined. There is no "best" or "better than". Most depends on the skill, judgement and perseverance of the operator. And a bit of luck doesn't hurt.

Some people are just jealous and have to make up all there finds, I can also get lots of clad everytime, by getting it out of the ashtray. I agree be honest and people are'nt that dumb, well at least change the photo once in awhile.
 
do research and find those nice hidden spots from long ago that only few knew about, and the ones that did know about these spots generally do not detect so when you go to these new places with permission of course, they are virgin grounds and thats how some of us make the finds we do. You can go to your local Parks and other places that had a lot of people and find Silver and other things but they are getting more and more worked out every year and that is most likely why some people only find smaller amounts of Great Finds than others. I know there is people out there that want to be TOP DOG in there postings and they tend to make false reports of finds but it is pretty easy to smoke these characters out and you can tell when they don't even think about that finding say 600 coins in 8 hours of hunting and other finds including Jewelry and Trash just isn't possible unless you find a HUGE Coin Spill or there was a big area for a kids hunt of Coins in the grass and a lot of them were never found. My finds are 100% found in the ground and if I had to make false postings just because someone else found something older or better, well then why should I even take the time to post anything at all, it would just be a big waste of time to me. This hobby is meant for FINDS from the ground that have been LOST for years to the recent, NOT FINDS FOUND IN COIN SHOPS or PREVIOUS YEARS FINDS trying to boost your ego or add points to your total if your in a club like I am. You find what you find, some days you get lucky and some days you don't fare as well as the other days but the finds I make are 100% FOUND WHEN STATED on those outings and not pulled out of my collection like a few people I have seen do. So to all of you, do the RESEARCH and you will make finds like I do and you will see how rewarding it can be from just doing a little reading up on some history of your local towns. I've been metal detecting since the early seventies.And there was always one guy who would stretch the truth or one who would one up everyone,why would this forum be any different.This forum is a great place to network with other treasure hunters.Some of my best finds were when I hunted at a slow pace the total number of coins were downs but I finished with a couple of good silver coins.Some hunters hunt at very good sites and make their own luck.Personally I don't like tot lots.I think its equivalent to searching a couch for pocket change or raiding a garbage can for pop bottles.I like older parks with a chance of finding that older coin and don't care about numbers or even penny coin spills.Probably the most important question a hunter has to ask themselves was 8-9 coins or 35cents worth a two hour hunt and like most of you I would say"yes it was a good day out and the next hunt will be better."
 
Anyone can go out and find the Newer Clad but what I like to do is exactly what you like to do, detect for the Older Coins and Silver and just pick up the Newer Clad when you come across them. I would much rather work a whole day for the Older Coins than just go out and find New Coins. It's just too boring when only digging Clad, while digging the Older Coins, you just never know what you are going to come up with when you get a signal that is deeper in an older area. It's like getting presents all day long when you find a good spot. Good Luck and HH.:thumbup:
 
I know what you mean...once again on this tot lot issue....I usually come out with about 80 cents! But have come out a couple times with ok finds..... I love the pictures when someone goes to an area hunted by several people and post a fist full of gold!:rofl:
 
I am hopeful that after I get most of the clad removed from the areas I am focusing in on I will find more silver. But unfortunately for now, I am one of those lost souls finding almost all clad! But if you want I can go in my coin collection and pretend I am finding all kinds of key dates and other great stuff! :rofl:
