I thought I would throw this question at you>

Some places are like that with a ton of Clad on the surface and also lots of Trash Items that must be first removed and then you have a better chance of finding those Older Coins that every Detectorist love to find. What kind of Detector are you currently using? Also, like Rick(ND) said above, I had over 300 coins that one day (each day just in New Clad I was finding around $20.00 in pocket change which payed for the gas) at a Fairgrounds and the reason I had to dig everything is because I had found a Walking Liberty Half only about 1" Deep and then occasionally I would pop out a Merc or Barber Dime within 1"-3" range. So it does pay to dig the Shallow Targets sometimes. You will sometimes be pleasantly rewarded with Older Coins or Silver or Gold Jewelry. Lots of luck at that site you are working on and Good Luck!

Or a lot of people detect at. Most will clean out all the new coins and some trash so I don't have to listen to them and concentrate on the deep and weaker signals, plus the iffy ones that can be some great items. So if this area you are at is old you will find the newer coins at it, but once you get rid of the newer coins you can start listening to the weaker and iffy signals that will be that deep silver others have missed.
James will tell you about all the good find he and a couple of us have found in this old park in Fargo,ND that is considered clean out back in the 80s. It just takes time and patience and someone to clean out all the new clad. We have another Park that I on a challenge to find one old coin with my Minelab Sovereign in this one area of a park he had worked plus others over the years. I got over 60 coins with 45 of them old ones in about 18 hours only because I didn't have to listen to all the loud hits of surface coins, going slow and knowing my detector is why I was able to do this. Here is the picture that not only impressed him and others, it impressed me what was still there. One is a 1931S Wheaties too I needed for my collection.

And Oak Grove Park still yields Old Coins there to this day. It is sometimes hard to get in there and detect due to the sport of Frisbee Golf.:veryangry: And this Park is next to a High School also which really makes it tough. I found my only 2-Cent piece at this Park against a tree, and I bet it was only covered by 1/2" of dirt. At first I thought it was a Token but soon was jumping up for joy when I seen 2-Cents on the back and the date of 1864 on the front. So if you have spots that are old and have lots of surface targets, just start working on them and you will find the deeper targets that others have missed. Good Luck and HH.:detecting:

I agree that it's best to make your own luck, especially if you're looking for the older coins & relics. Personally, I like the tot-lots. Not for the clad, although I can always find enough for batteries and beer, but for the gold. They seem to be a self-replenishing source of jewelry items, mostly junk but occasionally I find a really nice piece of gold or silver. I find mostly rings, religious medallions and broken chains. Around here they are always worth a quick scan every couple weeks.

I use a DFX. Right now I am just starting to play around with programs a little. Seems the pre set programs are OK. But obviously there is some work to do! Also I am just using a smaller coil right now a Eclipse 5.3. It gives me the separation I need in the high trash parks I am hunting...but I know I am losing depth. Today my totals (first hunt this season since January 25, 07)were>>>>>>> 6 quarters, 16 dimes, 5 nickels, and 26 pennies. 53 coins total but only $3.61 total. My totals are almost identical every day! Out for 2 1/2 hours. A little below what I usually average coin wise, normally 25 per hour.

Rick fantastic work!!! I am just not working at that level yet! I am mainly hitting top layers of clad. But hopefully I will have the patience to find the old stuff also. I hit the occasional silver/wheaties but have trouble pin pointing those deeper signals right now.

I have never tried the DFX but I have seen how many functions it has on it. Lots of learning with that unit of different settings and such. Your finds look good and I just wish I could get out and find some just to relieve the eagerness of getting out. About 12" of Snow still on the ground and I hope that there will be very little left by the end of this week. Also, the Smaller Coil is a good choice to use in trashy areas and also when you are first learning that machine. Hope your finds increase and Good Luck and HH.

I really don't understand why people are so concerned about what other people claim they find! Sounds like a small envy problem. Like when everyone says they only detect for the thrill of the hunt, then they all want to know what there find is worth! Life isnt a contest.

The main reason why I detect is not because of finding Valuable Items, but it is like traveling back in time to the old days when you dig down and pop out a Barber Coin or an Old Relic. Touching a piece of History and knowing that you are probably the only other person that has touched this item since it was lost. Just love the history of my finds and that is what makes this hobby so thrilling! Good Luck and HH.:detecting:

I have been reading these forums for a long time but until today have never participated. I have been detecting for 22 years now and i've kept accurate records since i started in 1986.In these 22 years i can tell you i've found 200+ coins in one day five times and 100+ coins in one day 101 times. These were clads found at playgrounds, football fields, fairgrounds, and parks.Where i detect these locations i average about 1 silver coin per 150-175 clad coins. My best and oldest finds come from hunting old yards but of course you dont find the number of coins in a yard like you do in a public site very often.I too am doubtful that someone could so consistently recover the quality and quantity of coins they claim. I sure there are many md'ist more skilled than i but i know how difficult it can be to come up with those sites consistently.I think those folks who are exagerating a bit are missing the point. I still enjoy hunting the same old playgrounds and parks as well as the new sites. This hobby is supposed to be fun!

The point of the post was what is believable?>>>The reason I came up with this post was someone on another detector forum was caught in a lie and discredited himself by getting caught in a lie involving miracles with god and presenting a photo. Once caught subject offered to remove photo! Problem was....the photo was an oldddddddd photo from the internet that someone else proved that this person was not telling the truth. It got me thinking...what is believable and what is not. I received several messages from people where they were able to prove fraud also. If you see envy at all in the post and did not notice it made for a good debate you better read all the messages again! Between this forum and the DFX forum I would say over 2000 read messages, maybe you missed the boat on this one!

Now you sound like someone who enjoys the hobby for what it is. You my friend is what makes this hobby great, once again thank you!

The best part is just getting out with your friends and enjoy a good hunt. A little competition is good too to keep us all on our toes, but when a person has to be top dog and either brings his own finds with him or claims to find something he did not takes the fun and thrill out of detecting.
I enjoy most of the people we hunt with and even though i don't find as much as some do I am just happy to see everyone find something that is good.Since I started detecting back in 1973 I have learn more about history here in the USA with the find we find than I ever did while in school. WHAT A GREAT HOBBY!!

I'm sorry....I think my post was misleading. In the areas of which you speak I can certainly see how you could get 100 or even 200 coins in a day. I think my mental vision was of the guys who claim to cut turf and dig a plug on nearly every coin. I'm not an experienced plugger, but every time I've tried it's taken considerably longer than kicking a coin out of the sand in a tot-lot. Maybe my energy level isn't on par with theirs, but I don't think I could do that.

I took this pic of my finds today. I spent a total of 4 3/4 hours and found 49 quarters, 19 dimes, 5 nickles and a bunch of pennies and the small silver ring. This can be verified as I had met my two hunting buddies at this school that we had been wanting to hunt. I do not know the exact total of quarters that the three of us found today, but I know it was over 100! What's in your wallet??????

Why does it need to be verified??? I think those numbers are believable. Great amount of quarters, others seem ok. The only numbers that would be questioned would be the quarters, but I am a believer!!:clapping: Great job!
