Has anyone modded their cibola with GB knob?

Stoof-tabsallday

Mentioned in another thread, but figured it merited it's own.
So here's what happened:

While bidding on and winning a bandido II, somehow I threw a bid on a cibola.
I didn't mean to do it and ironically, unlike every other auction, I didn't get sniped or outbid.

As per the rules, I had to buy it because I had the winning bid.

Was considering the vaquero down the line, so it's not bad. But no GB.
Found directions for a GB knob and toggle switch for all metal and disc to replace the pinpoint button. I ordered the components and considering there is no warranty on the detector, I figured I'll do the mod.

I've read that these modded cibola can outperform a vaq.

Another reason is so I have the ability to change coils. On my deleon, it had to be sent in because the GB is internal on that machine, so for this one, I want to be able to swap coils.

Anyone done this mod to theirs? Any pointers beyond what is in the PDF I read will be welcomed!!!

I modded mine. I saw your post in the other thread. the pdf is pretty straight forward.. as for the toggle switch... be sure to get one that will fit in the upper rod .. I have a few different ones.. I wanted to use a switch like is used in my Fisher 1266x.. but it was too large.. I had to a simple on/off type as it was smaller

I got the one from the pdf. We'll the newer version with a "b" in the part number because the one in the directions is now obsolete on the site, but should be the same.
So you install the switch through the top and secure it with the nut on the bottom right?

And how does it perform? I read a couple gents ended up putting a 3.75 turn one in because the 10 turn was too fine an adjustment.

But I'm curious how the install went.
I'm probably gonna de-solder the trim pot so I can (if needed) later put it back to stock.
Had to buy the wrist strap for the static, but only used one with computers. I'm assuming I clip onto one of the battery terminals?!? On the computer it was to the power supply.

But any tips you figured out will be appreciated.

I got a 3/4 in. Knob so it will look closer to the size of the others.

With the switch, you now have all metal mode right? A no motion all metal or motion all metal?

Sorry to ask so much lol.
Can't find kieth southern to ask him a bunch of stuff.

The install went great. The Cibola now picks up objects in my test garden that it wouldn't before.
There is a hole in the shaft large enough to mount the switch.. it's under the control housing where it mounts to the shaft. You'll will have to drill a hole on the opposite side of the shaft to mount the switch. Be suer to insulate the switch terminals to eliminate the possibility of a short.
With the switch in one direction it is in disc mode and in the other position it's in all metal that's where you ground balance it, use for pinpointing you could also prob hunt in all metal if you wish.
I'd connect the wrist strap to ground.. or neg battery terminal. I prefer the 10 turn pot... the 3.75 turn may work alright too..
Best of luck and HH

Ahh ok, that makes sense about drilling the hole on the con tr ol box side. Was wondering how it would be able to be put through the pole to be bolted on the bottom.
Saw another gent mounted his through the bottom right of the box, so maybe I'll do that.

When you say insulate the terminals, you mean use sink tubing over the soldered wires on the terminal switches?

yes.. you wouldn't want any exposed wires or terminals that could short out.. heat shirk tubing works great. I haven't seen the post about putting the switch in the control box. I like it in the handle.. easy to reach and use. Seems like installing it in the control box that you would have to install it where it wasn't easily accessible

Let me know how it goes. I read back through the threads, the idea the Cibola could be better than the Vaquero caught my interest. I have both and would like to at least adjust the Cibola internal GB a hair to match or slightly negative to what the dirt is here.

I don't want a Tejon because I already have a Garrett boat anchor running eight batteries. C'mon!

Oh I will for sure. May fry the thing!!! Better mine than yours. Didn't mean to buy it to begin with, but I will definitly post it.
The biggest reason I'm doing it is for coil changes.
When tesoro told me that internal GB machine SHOULD (not necessarily have to) be sent in for adjustment with different coils, I knew I had to do this mod.
If it works out I'll be really happy!!!
If bot I'll warn you all against it lol.

But I'm sure things will go swimmingly.
This is the first place I'll post just after the initial GB test when it's done.

Total cost is about 45 US for parts and shipping (can buy China crap, but no way in my book)
Chinese parts, $6 lol.

I'm putting parts in to last a lifetime.

Well I hit my first roadblock. My cibola doesn't have the Vaquero holes in the shaft. That may be difficult to do, so I'm thinking I'll install te switch where I've circled.
Out of the way enough but still at easy reach with my finger. :)
Waiting on the mailman still with the parts. May have to wait until Saturday to do the mod :-(
Have some other things to do today and my last final for the semester is tomorrow after a 10 hr shift lol.

Has anyone seen this before? I thought they all came with the extra hole?!?

Since I run supertuned with the threshold about 2 o'clock, all metal isn't usable anyway.

I thought about putting the ground balance control in top right of the face and leaving the pinpoint button where it is?

In the mod I read, the pinpoint is removed and switch put in its place. In essence the pinpoint is all metal no motion and controlled by the switch instead of the button.

Right, as I understand it, the existing pinpoint button was removed as to create a place for ground balance.

If you put the ground balance in empty top right position, no need to remove existing pinpoint button.

Unless you want to run all metal.

There is "no motion" detect as I understand it. Even in pinpoint mode, if you hold the coil still, you get nothing where as my Fishers have no motion detect.

The only place the large 10 turn pot will fit into is the spot were the stock pinpoint button is located due to the design of the control box.
If you were able to obtain a 3 3/4 turn pot, then it would fit.

Its no big deal to drill a hole in the s- handle from to to bottom, then enlarge the top hole so the toggle switch will fit thru it.

Not sure why, but my cibola has no hole top or bottom of s pole. I posted in another thread that I'm considering drilling a hole in the control box by the serial number. Out of the way when swinging but easy to get to to switch.

Well, totally forgot about the set screws in the knobs.
Planning the mod today after work.
Got a 1/16 and a 1.5 mm wrench to cover my bases.

I now see why it was suggested I cut the leads on the trim pot instead of desolder. It's a surface mounted pot. Gonna cut them instead. Nt sure if my hands are still that steady lol.

The tip I was going to use for my iron us very slim, but seems it has no wetability right at the tip. Gotta get my temp right on my iron. The solder turned gold when I tinned it. Maybe running too hot.
At any rate I'm still a little worried haha. Haven't soldered in a while and I see what everyone meant about tesoros wires being really stiff.
I'll post the results later when I'm done.

Also, I can't seem to pull the battery box from the control unit, so the board will have to stay connected to the box via the battery lead wires which should make it interesting... I must have a weird cibola.
No holes in the pole and the battery terminal box doesn't come out... lol

want to have a real ball ?? i'll lend you my hands that will just top off your fun.

don't feel bad though I made a few videos today left my ph on roof of car and drove off, so no videos , no ph and have to fork out for a new ph , oh dear !! I have a real bad habit of doing that, chatting with my mate then we are driving off he's honking away I thought what's he on so I stopped, had left my CTX on the roof, that could have ended bad.

anyways good luck with your new fun experience that's what life's all about.

Anyone know the size wrench for the buts on the pots?
Rather not take the whole set home from work, but might have to.

Hey stoof... You mention not de soldering. Even if you cut the pot loose , I would still de solder lugs from board. Is your plan to solder wires to old pot posts? I found it easer to de solder and start fresh and solder new wires in from back of board on my silver.
