Yellow Headphone Change for Excalibur II using Peltor 105's

I cut up a pair of cheapo $20 Sony phones that I really liked that were highly recomended by crazyman ....WHERE ARE YOU CRAZYMAN ? ........I put these headphone drivers into the same set of Peltors that you are using here ....WOW !!....Like you say ....NIGHT AND DAY difference ......Pretty incredible .....Jim

Hey Synthnut, haven't seen you around in a while but see you were just on an hour ago so you must lurk in your other machine's forum these days. Either way, are you talking about the Sonys model # V-150 studio phones that Crazyman turned us onto for great audio on the Sovereign a while back? I bet those speakers sounded good on your Excal because they are the best headphones I've used on any machine in terms of good audio thus far.

Want to get my hands on the Sun Ray Pro Golds though for the volume controls and limiter circuit so I can blast my GT's volume. I hear the limiter makes a click when in kicks in so the reduced volume from real loud stuff won't throw you off as to it's depth, as the slight click the limiter makes when it goes into action lets you know the target was going to be real loud.

The Sonys have no volume control on them so I keep the volume on the GT all the way down so surface stuff doesn't blast me and I seem to be able to hear the deepest of targets just fine but Minelab recommends cranking the volume all the way up on the Sovereign and then adjusting the volume on your headphones to insure you hear the deepest stuff, so must be something to that.

Crazyman said there is an upgraded model called the MDR-V500DJ that has minor improvements such as a coiled cord if anybody is cheap (but good) headphone shopping for their Sovereign. I've beat mine up pretty good in the field and no issues with them yet (the V-150 version). I like them because they are half the size of regular headphones so super light, super comfortable, and don't make my ears sweat. But the clincher is the audio is outstanding to me. Best headphones I've ever used thus far on a detector.

I've tried turning up the volume on the GT when I don't think any surface blasts are around but the audio seems to get a little more "flat" past a certain point. I think it's the volume overwhelming the headphones. I guess I could get one of those inline volume controls you plug into the stereo jack so the GT's could be full blast but I'd probably rather just build a limiter for the Sonys to make the loud surface stuff a non-issue with full volume on the GT if I do that. I've looked into a few limiter schematics and they are pretty basic. Some just using a few diodes. Maybe a winter project.

Far as Crazyman goes, he popped in a month or two back to battle out the old iron mask debate with me again. Was hoping he'd be popping in more often again but appears he hasn't. I do kind of miss the debates we had now that some time has passed.
