Who has said the heck with the $150 LiIon Battery?

Mine Won't fully charge, constant blinking green light. 2 years old used seasonally here in Michigan. Ran all the way dead - recharged - still constant blinking green light. Thinking I'm just not going to plop down $150 for a replacement LiIon battery. Maybe get a second AA battery case. If I can get 6-7 hours on 8 AAs that's going to be long enough. Bummer liked the battery life of the LiIon while it lasted.

I read where someone had a bad battery and they opened it up, researched the batteries used and bought replacements of the same on ebay.

Why would you even consider that. I bought a set of the Eneloop 2400's, and a set of the Powerex 2700's. Either
set will outlast the stock charger pack that came with the unit new.

I used Duracell 2400's in mine when the factory battery went bad (under warranty) for two weeks or so while waiting for the replacement. They didn't come close to the factory battery. And forget about standard AA's. My CTX went right through them real quick. I guess if you hunt from sun up to sun down you'll need a back up. I quit taking my AA pack. I get a full day out of mine with plenty left in the tank. I'd buy a new one if possible.

Mine is dead yet again I asked minelab about fixing them sense they are so expensive but no reply back yet.

battery update still going strong!

picked these up the other night just a little ad for minelab sense they were nice to me and did the right thing by me :bouncy:

think they call it a full house of Aussie silver, thanks to my CTX not found a better machine yet to replace it for finding this silver coin stuff !

Florin, shilling (shame about the condition a semi key date) sixpence & threepence

My pack started to go bad about 9 months ago; wouldn't fully charge. I would get about 4-5 or so hours out of it. Called Minelab, and while my machine was still in warranty at the time, the warranty for the battery pack was only 6 months. I was finally frustrated with 4 hours of battery pack and 8 hours of AA's, so I followed AJ's procedure above and repacked. Note, when I took out the Chinese Li-Ion batteries and tested them, 2 were still good but 2 were bad. I repacked with Japanese-made batteries 3 months ago and have had zero problems since.

I did have a little trouble with getting the solder to stick, and it helped to have a second set of hands helping. Spent $20 for 4 Japanese-made Li-Ion batteries and 1 hour or so of time with my friend (and a few beers); much better than $150 for a new pack.

$180 nattery pack with $5 worth of cheap chinese lithium batteries. They should be ashamed of themselves.

Hello Everyone -

Ok taking the plunge! Have 4 new "made in Japan" 3.7v Li-ion cells en route. I've taken the old cells out using a sharpened mini screw driver - carefully prying the metal strap from the ends of the cells. No heat was required. I plan to soldier the same metal strips to the new cells with a 230watt iron and a dab of soldier between the strips and the new battery surface. Should be quick and easy moving forward. I'll post the photos as I go.

New cells cost me $15 shipped to my door.

Happy Hunting!

:beers: Looking good so far!

If ever I had to, might consider these or similar from eebay(check as there are other types available) and also check from other sources for example:

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/4-Samsung-18650-Rechargeable-2500mAh-HIGH-drain-Discharge-Lithium-Battery-w-tabs-/141906839917?hash=item210a4e896d:g:bJsAAOSwG-1WxT~s

or

4 of these in the USA:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/2x-IMR-18650-3-7V-LiMN-2600mAh-30A-High-Drain-Rechargeable-Battery-Solder-Tabs-/322020005485?hash=item4af9e3566d:g:NfUAAOSwUuFW0Jtc

as a viable replacement alternative.

well done Jason, always pay to check the length of the old battery's think I have that in the link up the top I put up , as those 18650's come in differing lengths

drives me nuts sometimes with torches ,

those green Panasonics are good battery's so you will be right now!!

yeah don't need much solder on there just enough to make a contact and make them stick !

AJ

Make sure you only buy quality 18650 cells
like Panasonic, Nitecore, Olight, Samsung,
and Sony. Just stay away from the cheap Chinese
cells like Ultrafire!

Hello Everyone - Ok today the batteries showed up in the mail. They were early - not supposed to arrive until the 18th, Friday.

They look great - purchased 4 of them for $15 shipped to my door in Michigan and purchased on eBay. They say "Made in Japan".

I've started to "super-glue" them together as the original ones where - keeping in mind their orientation. Here are some photos. I hope to finish up later today or tomorrow and will post as I go along.

This has been "too" easy thus far. Hope it works after all is said and done.

Ok very good AJ,

Was wondering if the "metal" battery strips are Soldier based? Can you just tap them with heat or do they need soldier? When I remember the metal strips it appears they were only tapped with a pointed soldiering iron. They may solder/flux strips. How did your's go back on?

Thanks!

Jason

hey Jason

yeah they are just crimped on from the factory , but I soldered them back on just enough solder to make them stick and make a contact so they don't come apart then I electrical taped the middle of the 4 battery's after all soldered and I think I saved the rubbery foam ends and taped them back on to stop any shorting. which ever way seal the ends.
