Which Tesoro model to purchase?

TN Girl said:
Jabbo,

Is it possible to become too reliant on the tones and maybe miss some good stuff? I read somewhere that you should dig everything (at least when you're new to the hobby). Everyone has their own opinion...What's yours?
Tones makes it easy to leave all those nails, dig all the middle and high tones when looking for gold jewelry and coins.

A little discrimination on a beep and dig will keep you from the nails too. Can thumb (adjust) the discriminator to see what a target may be (ID it with discriminator) and turn it low to continue hunting. I have multi-tone detectors, and all in all I have found more jewelry with the single tone units. Dig more trash but also uncover the surprising goodies.

In my opinion a single tone detector teaches lessons about targets and soil that apply as you try detectors with more features. If you start with a detector that tells you more and learn to depend on the detector's interpretations and not your observations ... dig less trash and less nice surprises. Trade-offs.

Hello,

I have own Tesoro, Minelab Sov, Garret GT1500 and in my opinion if you don't have a screen to focus on and just dig the target its the best way to go. The more you dig the more you find. With the Tesoro they have the legendary discriminator that discriminates out a nail near a target and detects the target.

You can't go wrong with a Compadre for the money spent.

I just purchased one for $95 used only 5 times and if I decide to keep detecting I can always upgrade and hand this over to my nephew when he comes out with me.

When you get to a tot lot nothing beats switching on the switch and just start detecting with what you have rather than spend time figuring out coils buttons etc.

Keep things simple is the advice I can give you.

Hope this helps.

Hi TN Girl and welcome aboard !

Like everyone else I guess, I like to visit different metal detecting sites, as each one has it's own unique offerings. At the present time I'm bouncing back and forth between here at www.findmall.com and another great site called treasure hunter forum. I recommend you take a look at Tabdog's posts in the Tesoro forum at treasure hunter forum. He lives in Arkansas. His posts are very entertaining and almost always include beautiful pictures of the parks and tot lots he mostly hunts. You will not believe the amount of stuff he recovers on his outings, including gold & silver jewelry, coins, trinkets of all kinds and of course lots of trash items. He uses several Tesoro detector models, but loves the Compadre (owns two of these and dubs them Mr. Speedy and Ms. Speedy). You can go there as a browser (non-member) and Tabdog is such a prolific poster, you could spend a whole evening on his alone ! He made his own special digging tool that speeds-up target recovery. At my request, he kindly posted details and photos on Monday, May 25, 2009 @ 11:56 AM , for those who would like to make their own. I looked for that post tonight, but couldn't locate it. Maybe it was moved to a different forum, or he took it off for some reason. Anyway, I think you will enjoy Tabdog at treasure hunter forum.

Good luck with your choice of detector.

Todd

Sounds like digging everything (and not relying on TID) is the way to go...at least for now. For me, it's better to start with a simple detector so I don't get overwhelmed and frustrated. I've decided to purchase the silver. Thanks to all of you for your advice! I'm sure I'll be popping up with lots of questions once I start digging. :detecting:

Correct me if I am wrong but the Compadre will discriminate out iron(nails) beside good targets better than the Silver? (Maybe truning down the Sensitivity on the Silver will help cure this?) But the Compadre's 5.75" Concentric coil(that is hardwired) is too small sometimes, but it is great in trash. The older Compadre's came with a 7" Concentric coil.

Or TN Girl see if you can get a cheaper second-hand Tesoro is another way to go, like a Lobo(original-Manual GB), Bandido(original), Bandido II uMax, or Eldorado uMax. Or of course a Silver. But the lifetime warranty may be no good if you buy second-hand unless you keep in contact with the original owner.

I'm thinking of buying a used detector for now just in case I decide that this is not something I want to pursue. I figure if I do get hooked, as I suspect I will, I can always upgrade and keep my original to loan out to friends who might want to tag along. The warranty is a big factor, though...

IMO stay away from the Garret Ace, it has a very irriating " Bell Tone" that dings after you have passed the target, and is hard to pin point with. Not in the same league as Tesoro. JMHO

TN Girl..........(Addendum to my previous post on page 2, July 28, 2009 12:42 AM)

I found the instructions on how to make your own Tabdog "Arkie Digger" if you're interested (and anyone else who might be.).

Go to: Treasure Hunter Forum website > Metal Detector Forums > Metal Detecting Discussion Forum (Page #1, as of today) > Arkie Tabdog Hand Digger Info Requested

Todd :)

TN Girl (and any others interested)........Here's another bit of info regarding the "Arkie Digger" mentioned in my previous post.

You can watch video's of Tabdog using the Arkie Digger, by going to page #2 (as of today) of the Metal Detecting Discussion Forum at Treasure Hunter Forum website and clicking-on his post titled "Arkie Digger Video", dated Fri April 10th, 2009. At the bottom of his post there are two hyperlinked addresses to click-on that take you to the videos.

Hope you find this as interesting as I did !

Todd :)

BTW...I would have Edited my previous post to add this info, but was denied (timed out or something.).

I have a tiger shark and hunt the local lakes between Knoxville and Chattanooga. The good stuff is in the water knee to chest deep.Tesoro is the way to go and the waranty can not be beat. But you probably want need it.A company would not give a lifetime waranty if the quality was not the best.

RJ - If I ever decide to upgrade, I think the Tiger Shark will be the one I choose. From what I've seen, it looks like a good all-purpose machine. A lot of folks really seem to like it.

Except for the Sand Shark PI ... it will work great in salt water.

RJ Right on I got a Tiger also, Mickfin
