I guess the ideal thing would be to really learn one detector really well and have an identical one as a spare but it is too late for me I've sampled too many to just be happy with one .I feel different ones are good in different situations .I usually switch off between using an Explorer SE , White's M6 or Troy X2 . Funny thing is I've been married to the same woman for 40 years .

LOL on the 40 years...............thanks for the input

There's a lot to be said for one detector and knowing it well, especially if it has either manual or auto ground tracking and a good coil selection. However there's a fair bit to be said for having a separate water machine, and/or dedicated gold machine if one prospects or spends time in the water very often. Too, a light, quick response turn on and go machine is great for seeded competition hunts if that's your bag. I'm a great believer in if it's worth having, two or more is even better so I have a pretty full stable of detectors. Over time I've gotten to know their responses, weak points and strengths pretty well so I can hunt fairly effectively with any of them. And, I've always got a spare for a companion to use or a back up if needed.
My two bits,

Hi Elton,
Whether it is one detector or more, I believe it is very important to get to know your detector well.
I, like others, have more (many more) than one detector. One reason for this, as mentioned by Brian, is that there are different and distinct areas where one detector is more suitable than another.
If you have more than one detector, the challenge is to get to know them all well.
I find that having more than one detector, I can learn their individual strengths and weaknesses, and also my own strengths and weaknesses. I believe this may, and hope it does, make me a better detectorist. HH

Quick comment on dirt doctors married for 40 years.
I have been married 39 years to the same woman. A woman is like a good old coupe auto. There is no warranty or guaranty. After a few decades the high maintenance is gone and most of the bumps and pot holes have pasted. It becomes smoother with a gently sloping comfortable and quite pleasant rides down the road of life.
Please don't tell my wife I said that!!! Thanks for reading and Happy Trails... Z

I have used many detectors over the years thru trading and the like and learned a lot in the process as one detector won't do it all so an ardent member of the hobby usually has several.

On the other hand the fellow like a personal friend of mine bought an XLT in 93 and using just one unit for all these years has become a Guru of sorts with an XLT and can make it talk.

Bottom line a good detector in learned hands will beat a top of the line model with a nut behind the wheel every time so learn your unit well and you will excell...

El,
Both sides of the debate have (and always will have) good points.

Do you own a saw or a hammer? The odds are that you do have more than one of each, and no sane man would fault you for having 5 or 7 or more hammers. Each having a different use that it is just plain better at. One hammer could get most of it done but not all. Tack, finnishing, framing, roofing, drywall. drilling, ball pean, cross pean, and sledge, framing sucks with a finishing hammer and drinving stakes is better with a drilling hammer or sledge.

The right tool for the job. However, all the hammers in the world will not make you a better blacksmith (carpenter, etc). You must learn to be proficient with the tools you use.

The dept. I work in has 6 lathes, 1 mill, 3 swiss turn automatics, two gundrills and several saws. I can use all of them. 1 swiss not very well at all. If I do not run a machine for 6 mo. or so I start to loose some edge. It does not take long to pick back up on though. Some people can use many machines and be comfterable on any of them. It does not take but a few miniutes to say OH Yeah, I remember that little quirk. A lot different but still the same in a lot of ways.

There are good reasons to have more than one machine.

Hey Elton---What happened to that idea you had awhile back about "acquiring" a top of the liner of every brand of detector? ---I thought it was a pretty good idea.----ANYWAY, we (my wife & I) own & use SEVERAL (different) types/styles of detectors.----We have a use/need for EACH & EVERY one of them---and if I can't name a reason for haveing them at the moment---I'll dream one (reason) up--real quick!!---In other words--I'm something of a 'tector-holic" -------Seriously, we are able to travel some & thus able to detect pretty much year around.---So we DO make good use of all the detectors we have.-----Know 'em ALL well??---I put a lot of hrs. behind all of them but I'm sure I could know them better.---I've always believed a person don't/can't get the full potential out of a machine(s) if you are useing more than a couple (three at the most).-----My problem is, I don't practice what I preach!!---It's just that they (tectors) are SO NEAT!!----You know what I'm talkin about, don't ya?? ;) ----------Del

Del............:stars:...........................:ban:................What you talking about????

Hey Elton this is a very good queston,I have thought about it for sometime now and I can see both sides of this however I believe a detector well learned with a patient person would be hard to beat....I only have two but believe me I have thought about seveal others latelyI have a water and land detector so I try to be happy with them but to be honest I like detectors and If I had a million dollars to play with I would have all the major players in the detector world working overtime....lol and accessories with a new Jeep Wrangler......It would be a site to see hahaha........hh.......Dan

My wife wants a Wrangler too. Hmmm... I only have 2 detectors myself know one well and one am learning.
