What do you NOT like about the MXT?

stikman said:
Maybe if it could tell you all of the hot spots within 10 miles of your current location:lol:

Yours did not come with that mode, MAN YOU MUST HAVE THE OLD MODEL.............

I agree I NEVER use the notch feature and as it is I think it is useless. The tone ID should be no trouble adding but then why would they even need the M6. I don't night hunt so the back light would be nice but further down on my list. How about " depth readings" on the fly. When I'm running the + gains ( no modulation ) I could tell how deep the targets are if I'm looking for the deeper stuff. Rob

A hip mount unit would be nice for prospecting but the suspender/bungie cord holder works well and takes all the weight off of the unit when prospecting or coin hunting. I went up against a 4,000 Minelad one day at Placerites. He was a seasoned prospector that did nothing but prospect for 30 some years. I found 2 small nuggets to his one. The MXT is a gold magnet and I do not have to dig every target to find the gold. I just dig up the non-iron targets. I found a 1/2 grain picker 2 inches down with the MXT! I also found a 3/4 ounce nuggets that was in an old river bed and was totally encrusted with host rock......jim

I agree with you Joe..............

I love my MXT. I would like to see it with a back light so I don't have to wear one on my cap at night. In summer we detect our gold fields at night and cap light brings lots of insects. Recently I went to a gold field with a group and Observed the Minelab GP Extreme among many other minelab machines. It was picking up metal signals from 6 inches that didn't even register a weight on the field scales. I weighed them at work and the largest was 0.016g. I tried running my 5.3 coil over it and it didn't register at all.

I only use my MXT for gold hunting. Great in trashy areas where the minelabs can't go and great for getting up close and in and around rocks, bushes etc where the minelab boys seem to avoid with their massive coils. Even hunting gold in relic mode with no discrimination, the on screen display still tells me if it's iron or not so I don't dig much trash. The minelab boys who are looking for small gold have to dig everything. I get more ground covered per hour than they do.

I still find lots of bullets which means the minelab boys haven't been where I am yet. MXT? Love it!

Nancy,

You mentioned the headphone jack being loose, I have seen several of them with this problem, but that is the only problems I have seen on any MXT around here as they are well built.

I use 2 Minelab more then any detector with the Sovereign with the Sun Ray DTI meter probably my favorite, but have used the MXT for a while also and now my wife uses the MXT all the time. I feel it is because I was able to master the Sovereign is why it is my favorite as I can dig more coins and less trash. I also been using the E-Trac learning as I go. Now I find the MXT a very good detector and after using the Minelabs I found the MXT was a lot more fun to use and could see most everything my Sovereign could, but seem like I dug more older coins that were deeper with the Sovereign. When my wife and I detect she will dig more coins everytime, but mine are the older ones while hers is a lot of new coins as she can go faster than me.
The Minelab takes more patience to use and understand than the MXT so if you dont have a lot of patience the MXT is the one you want as it will do well for you.
Now on some actual test between my MXT and James ND Explorer XS on actual coins in the ground and not preburried one he was able to pick up several older IH and silver dimes the MXT did hit on. Now one signal I got he couldnt get or said it was trash irem turned out to be a old key that was around 11 inches deep, the MXT gave a decent signal on it and one you would dig.
The Minelab Sovereigns, Explorers and the E-Trac takes patience to use and understand and they do well, but the MXT is more fun to use and will also do well, but the Minelab to be have a slight edge on the older and deeper coins and those close to trash items if you spend the time to use and understand them.

Yes, and surprisingly as much as my MXT had been used in the past years, that was the only thing wrong with it. They sure do make them to last! HH to all, Nancy

Probably the learning curve is what I don't like, I just haven't used it enough. I've practiced [with the 6x10 Eclipse coil] quite a bit on various targets and the display seems very inconsistent. I suspect the MXT has great potential if I could just learn some good techniques. I acquired an IDX Pro about the same time as the MXT and will sooner grab the IDX Pro [with the 5.3 Bullseye coil] for hunting coins. I'm thinking a smaller coil, either the 4.5x7 Excelerator or 5 inch DD Excelerator might help me with the MXT. I'm a little torn between one of these for the MXT or maybe the 4 inch Bluemax on the IDX Pro. I'm mainly hunting coins in trashy areas and prospecting [a little]. Thanks for any suggestions anyone might have and thanks for all the good information I've found here.
James

I have found that the 18 x 15 sef butterfly coil is more sensitive to smaller targets than my 6 x 10 DD coil.

it's amazingly good. Has anyone else used this coil?
Dicko..

One thing i noticed today that I didn't like.

Senario: Relic Mode,Gain +1,Disc 0

My MXT functioned fine except when the Super 12 Coil got bumped, the detector beeped as if i found a target.I bumped it with my shoe (no metal in my shoe).

Is this the nature of the beast? or maybe something loose in the coil?

Any and all help greatly appreciated.

Hmmm no option to edit my post. My 4X6 DD coil also falses when it gets bumped.I am searching an archaeological site and now i got to make real sure that i don't bump the coil. This is my only complaint i have,,,and i guess it is the "Nature Of The Beast" to do this when bumped.I just gonna hafta be more careful :detecting:

Yes all my coils ping when I bump them into rocks and stuff. It doesn't do this to me all the time though. I've narrowed it down to either hotter ground or atmospheric conditions. backing the gain off fixes this but i perfer to let it ride and re-swing when I hit something. I've never had it do this to me at the beach but it's always been perfect days and no hot ground.

Dicko..

Thanks Dicko. I am running the gain up some because i am searching for Iron that is 225 years old. I am being more careful, but back tracked my previous hits to make sure that they were all genuine hits and not false bump beeps. Spot on Mate (hands you a frothy VB) :drinking:

This comment applies to detectors in general, not just the MXT. I generally use 2-3 different coils at a given site depending on circumstances. Although I have a separate lower rod already attached to each of the coils in my arsenal, its a little more time consuming than I'd like to change out to a different coil. Why can't the main coil cable come integral with the shaft (mounted either inside or outside), and then be able to just plug in or screw on the connector directly to a wireless coil? Would keep you from having to wind and unwind the coil during each coil change. Be nice to be able to just snap on a coil to the bottom of the main shaft which would make both the physical and electrical connections at the same time. I know, this is a far out idea, but wanted to throw it out there for kicks. Other than that, I'm very happy with my MXT except for the fact that a couple of the control knobs seem to want to move around by themselves once in a while. Its quite frustrating to not be getting any decent hits, then suddenly realizing that my discrimination knob has moved to the 2 o'clock position. Any suggestions on how to hold it in place?
