What detector did you start with.

Hi Brian
I had the good fortune to also begin my TH'ing fun with the Jetco Mustang. In 1977 I purchased a jetco Mustang from either Montgomery Wards or JC Penny not sure as I can't remember for sure. As an added bonus in June 1977 I reenlisted in the US Army and was headed back to Germany. I was stationed in Augsburg and found tons of coins and Relics. I went to Munich and found a 40 LB bomb left over from WWII. Sure made for some excitement, I think it was the only time I made the 'SIR' Serious Incident Report board! LOL I understand you not wanting to part with your Mustang as I sure wish I had kept mine. I sold mine in a thrift shop at Fort Ord. CA. I think it sold for $20.00. I think I paid $29.00 or something like that. I now use a Whites DFX and have an XLT for my backup detector. 29 years of digging in the ground and still having so much fun.

Hi All My TH'ing Friends
Happy New Year to you and yours!
I bought my first detector from either Montgomery Wards or JC Penny, it has been so long ago that I can't recall! LOL
I do remember only paying about $29.00 or so and it was a Jetco Mustang. The Mustang had a fixed coil that was around 6 inches or so. The Mustang had a black plastic case with a speaker and a volume control and ground balance knob. I was in the US Army in Augsburg Germany and located so many coins and relics that many time I would fill all of my pants pockets. It was great! Sure wish I had kept my Mustang as it was fun to use and it was easy. I recall finding a 1900 Great Britain one penny at nearly a foot. You just had to listen for those faint beeps and dig and dig till you found the target. Would have been nice to have a pin pointer back then as so much time was spent zeroing in on the target.
Wish I had one now just to show folks what I started with.

Heck started with a flea market radio shack but its really been a ride the last 16 years and used them all except perhaps a Nautilus....

My first was really a cheap toy as a kid. Sure dug up some dirt all around the neighborhood but never really did any good. Some years later I bought a few used machines. The first few I can't recall, but I think my 4th or 5th machine was a Red Baron. I also had one of the older Whites but don't recall the model. A few machines or so later I got the Whites 6000 Di Pro. I still have that machine along with with some other Whites to include three goldmasters, Garrett's, Minelab, and Bounty Hunter. Oh I remember the Rad Shack Micronta too way back. Had a few, got rid of a few, now use a few. I guess that toy one x-mas whatever it was.

I can still remember the day of purchase. My cousin and I stoped by down town Pontiac after a Karate class in 1971 it was raining that day. There in the display window at Joe's Army & Navy was two Jetcos and a old mine detector. The Jetco detector was 85.00 and had to put it in layaway. My cousin bought the Treasure Hawk. I had a lot of fun with that metal detector.

Now I have 2 DFX`s and making good finds with them. Had some good finds with that 5000!!

HAPPY NEW YEAR ALL AND HH JIM IN BAMA

Yes, mid 60's, at about 15-16 yrs old, I ordered a kit out of popular mechanics magazine, soldered the thing together, it worked in conjunction with an am radio, a BFO detector, I found piles of metal objects around our place, we had a site on our place in Texas near Belton Lake that a 1920's cabin had burnt down yrs ago, I worked that site a lot, never did find anything of real value, forks, spoons, melted metals of all sorts, but had lots of fun.

and I still have it in mint condition with an extra coil... is anyone interested in buying it?

My first detector was a $19.95 Radio Shack detector. But wait there's more. We splurged on a Radio Shack kit amplifier to put on top of the unit so it could go deeper!!! Worked all day in the sun and found a new Memorial about 1" deep. It's a wonder I ever made it out of that.
Thank God for the Bounty Hunter Rebel and Outlaw which followed, and for the Coinmaster V Supreme which broke the hot rock barrier and kept me from going nuts!!!
