Waterproof Connectors

:coiltec:This one came with the WOT conversion for the Excalibur. The guys at Coiltec tell me the connectors are the same as the Sovereign.
All I need now is a Sovereign with a 8" coil and I should have all bases covered:ausflag:

I am just wondering, do you need the level of protection provided by the Ikelite connectors for surf only? Seems to me you could wrap standard connectors with a product like Saran wrap, plus a layer of electrical tape for scuff protection and be good for splash zone and 3 to 4 feet of depth. The hydrostatic head of fresh water is .433 psi per foot of depth, so 4' x .433 = 1.732 or 1.3 psi. I may mock up a short piece and test it.

....and if a wave knocks you over ? ..... I'd rather too much protection rather than not enough .....Jim

Or you step off into a trough or hole while wading, all of this can happen. My point is how much external water pressure is it required to resist? As in the calculations, 4 feet of water would exert less than two psi on your device. It doesn't take a very strong seal to stand up to a few psi, a tight seal is basically all that should be needed.

Is the Coiltek device rated to the same depth as the Excalibur it is sold for? If so that is 200 feet (60.9 meters) the force at that depth is far higher than say 3 feet (.9 meter)

10' x .433 = 4.33 psi
200' x.433 = 86.6 psi / 4.33 = 20 times greater pressure

I have used the Bulgin for a year now on my Excal
in 2 min. I can change from stock 10'' for in the water fresh and salt
to Wot 15'' for the beach.
Very easy to install, wire connections are all set screws.
The use of Plumber's silicone grease makes it much easier sliding
water proof seals over the wire.

Would you mind posting a picture of the Excalibur with the connectors?

I've thought about getting an Excalibur but I am hearing way too many stories of malfunctions and long repair times. I have no doubt that the Excal is a GREAT machine but I am gun shy about buying one. I plan to have a water machine by next summer but I just don't think it will be an Excalibur. I have not studied them and I suppose which one you get would have something to do with the beaches you hunt. Maybe an LS would be nice but if I were waist or chest deep I would NOT want to be fiddling with knobs and switches to determine if a target is ferrous or non-ferrous... For me, if a CZ-21 works well in gulf saltwater and has some low/high tone.. i'll be looking at that... or a Whites, I don't know. A few years ago I would have not even stopped to think about it, I would have gotten an Excalibur.

I have not sold me Sovereign though....dummy. :twodetecting:

I really like the CZ-21 myself as far as performance goes ...but there is just something more telling, and more organic about an Excal /Sovereign that just does it for me .....It's a shame that Minelab has gone from the top of their game to such shoddy workmanship ...... I would assume that they would HAVE to reccognize that their reputation is going into the crapper with the way they have been handling things of late .... So many are holding on tighly to the older machines for fear they will have to go to a new machine if they don't take extra special care of thier old machine .....If I had to go to a new water machine right now , I really don't think in all fairness to myself that I could buy a new Excal !!... It reminds me of what one of my bosses said to me when he let go of a really good worker that took too much time off of work ...." It doesn't matter how good somebody is , if you can't count on them being at work , I would rather have a so so worker that I knew was going to be in every day " ......It's the same thing with detectors ....The Excal is a great machine when it's on top of it's game, but it's either broken or falling apart a good part of the time ...... My partner just got a CZ-21 and I look over to where he's digging and he has a BIG pile of sand in front of him !!.....They go DEEEEP and they can find the goods !!...... JIm

Yes thanks for taking the time and trouble to post those pictures. Those Bulgin connectors look good and should perform fine for wading.

I wonder how much smaller the Mini Bucaneers are ? .....Jim

Jim according to the spec sheet, the assembled connector is a little less than 5" long and a little over 1" diameter. These are the dimensions once the two parts are mated.

That sounds pretty good to me !!....Looks to me like either the Mini Bucaneer or the 400 Series would work too !!.....Jim

Thanks Jim,

All in all that is not a bad price in low quantity. Also if you buy the socket half for additional coils, it is only about half of that, so about $25 to change coils in the same way you can with most detectors is a good deal in my world. Unless you are diving and then all bets are off.

otlew,
Correct me if I'm wrong , but if you look at Jim's paperwork , it apears to me as if he has not one, but two complete sets of male and femaie connectors .....So you could have a complete 1/2 a setup for each coil ..... so you're looking at more like $13 - $14 for each coil .....Do you see what I'm saying ? .....Check the paperwork ...Jim
