Tesoro Silver uMax:tesoro::usaflag:

Yeah, a flatten aluminum screw cap is tricky and can fool you sometimes if you just go by sound. They usually sound louder and bigger than a coin though. It pays to dig most good sounding signals, because you just never really know what's buried until you dig it up. That adds to the excitement. However, if you start digging way too many screw caps that gets old and tiring fast. Thumbing the discrimination knob to the point where a screw cap discriminates is nearly a fool proof way to ID them. It's fast and easy to do and is just as accurate or more accurate than a digital number readout that some detectors incorporate. 53Silver does a great job explaining this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hde_YatsVyA

The audio sound of the Silver and the human brain make a winning team. http://www.findmall.com/read.php?17,1755256,1756064

The Silver and the Outlaw excel at this 'audio talk' more so than any of the other detectors that I have used. I haven't tried them all yet.:)

Thanks tabman, I posted the second video few posts above. I didn't know it was yours (excellent!). What is your opinion about the stock coil? Would you recommend it, or is there a "better" choice?

I prefer the stock 8 inch doughnut coil over the 9 x 8 inch coil.

The stock coil on the Silver is a very good coil for most situations, but for really trashy areas the 5.75 inch coil would be my choice.

Thank you again. I found a very good offer in Europe. The problem is, they have 2 different versions of the Silver uMax. The second one is a "special edition": http://www.lovecpokladu.cz/detektory-kovu-tesoro/tesoro-silver-max-special-edition-374

It has a 3rd knob on the right side. I didn't see anyone using it yet (at least on Youtube). Is this something new? The translation of the red marked Text says: "Possibility to regulate the sound!!" If this is volume control, than I would take it (and maybe ask for the 8" coil). I hunt without headphones. A speaker that is too loud, is always my biggest problem. But is it the only visible modification made by Tesoro? What about other components on the inside? I hope the performance is still the same.

I use the Silver as well and really like it, my test garden was set up with some Silver and clad Dimes at 6" and Silver and clad quarters at 8", and I couldn't hit any of them originally.... I made sure the auto GB was spot on by making a slight adjustment to the internal pot, per another post, then I got better depth on both Dimes and Quarters, the one Quarter on edge at 8" makes an iffy signal one way and solid signal at a 90 degree sweep, the Silver Quarter in the garden also at 8" isn't quite as solid as the clad but I'm still getting a good signal with the coil brushing the dirt.... 8" on Silver Quarters is really hitting the limits of my machine and it appears I can get another inch or two on the clad in my Colorado soil conditions the Silver Dimes at 5-6" is pretty much the max as well and a little better on the clad too it seems. I also get good signals on tabs down in the 4-6" range but not on the surface... and those darn screw caps sound good down to 6-8" as well....
I run my Disc at or below foil for most of the time as I am loathe to miss any gold, just one gold ring is worth ten thousand pennies, and that's alot of holes, so I dig a lot of tabs, what's a guy to do... oh well.... Up and down,up and down, up and down.... it's keeping my legs in shape, that's a good thing right?

My next purchase will be the Outlaw.... with the hopes of another inch or two of depth and interchangable coils with my Silver!

I wish they made the smaller EXcelerator coils for the Tesoro Epsilon series after reading some of the test reports from Kellyco, they seem to outdo many of the stock coils.....
