I have a Silver uMax. I love it. It is a great machine for predominately hunting coins and jewelry items in parks and playgrounds. Its all the machine you need. Set the discriminator for the type of hunting you wish to do. If you can, you might want to consider adding a 4 inch coil. With a 4 inch coil you have a great tot lot machine, one that you can get in and around the metal poles supporting the appratus ...... provided you remember to turn the sensitivity down.

Oldcoon you're 100% correct.

I have had my Silver for over a year now. I love the music it plays. Like others have said, it talks to you just like the compadre does. You can tell a deep coin buy the soft but good sound. Junk will have a very good beep going one direction and a broken sound theother direction. The Silver and Compadre are the only detectors I keep in my car. I have not used my Vaquero for a long time. It has dust on it. KEN,,, IND.

Howdy Tabman, first, congrats on the Silver, it is truly one amazing machine! It was my first machine, and one I won't part with, period. It does in deed speak that Tesoro language once you have some time with it, you will know when that happens... I never believed it, but then one day, wham! Yup, now I know what folks mean, lol.

That Silver will find the coins and the gold jewelry as well, it will surprise the heck out of ya. When I first got my machine, I hunted with Disc set to the "F" in foil... and sense at 8-9.... worked great, was finding coin and silver items, rings, earrings etc.... left and right... but after a few months.... I even posted.... does it find gold, lol, I found it hard to believe I had no gold to speak of... sooooo..... tried an experiment... took a thin gold band, buried it around the 4-5 inch mark... and hunted as I normally did, "F" in Foil, sense at 8-9.... and my usual swing speed.... it was eye opening.... I would have missed the gold band!!!

Ok, long story short, here is what worked real well for "me"...

1.) Set your Disc to "Min"
2.) Set sense to around 9, or no chatter
3.) Now:
- Hunt in All Metal (I think that gives best sensitivity and depth etc...)
- Get a Hit
- Toggle to your preset MIN disc
> Sounds the same --> It gets Dug - period (if you are hunting for gold jewelry)
> Sound goes away completely - I walk (the iron disc is real nice)
> Sounds a "little" different, I'll probably dig it.

That is what worked awesome for me, I'm mainly a jewelry hunter. This landed me a number of gold rings, pendants etc etc... I was amazed!!!
You will dig the junk, but again, I'm willing to do that for the gold, lol. Probably landed my first 10 or so gold rings from parks etc, out here in Phoenix hunting like that.

Then, I added a Cleansweep coil and WOW!!!!! Again! Not as deep at the 8, but fun as all get out!!!! With the CSC I hunted the same way, BUT was able to pretty much MAX the sensitivity with CSC coil!!! Again, amazed.... it never came off. I could find small gold stud earrings etc... with that set up.

I know, officially, you are supposed to get the CSC balanced to the Silver uMax.... to get best depth etc... but all I can say is, I was pretty darn satisfied with just putting it on and hunting. Again, other opinions will vary, I can just speak for myself.

I gotta tell ya, I have the Silver uMax, The 5.75 Compadre, the Bandido II uMax, the Fisher F2 and the Vaquero.... all great machines in their own way....

Bottom line for me.... I won't get rid of my Silver uMax, or the Bandido II uMax, period! Lol. I run the Bandido with a CSC coil as well, and am floored by the performance etc.... as much as I like the other machines, these two are my favorites, lol. The Vaq, Supertuned, is one deep little sapsucker etc... but I dunno, for some reason, I really like the Silver and the B2 uMax.

Oh, one thing, you might want to consider putting a rubber toggle boot over the Silver's toggle... mine would get dirt in it (AZ is pretty dusty, lol) and I'd have to get it repaired.... I ended up putting a rubber toggle over it, been over two years and that toggle still works like new, lol.

Again, these are my thoughts, and keep in mind, I hunt jewelry mainly, its work, but its fun, it relaxes me, lol. I'm ok with digging the tabs etc... bring 'em on... that nice gold ring from time to time, makes it worth it... again, mainly for fun, but have to be honest, love that GOLD feeling, lol.

Hunting like this, coincidence or not, I reckon I'll never know (I do).... hunting for around 3-4 years. so far over 35 gold rings, at last count, "x" gold pendants, crosses, pendants etc... and much more silver... I know mostly luck, but, the machines are amazing. I know plenty of folks have found much more, but I reckon I just wanted to make the point that this worked well for me. All this to say, the Silver rocks!!! Good luck and keep us posted to your finds however you decide to hunt. Sorry for being so wordy... just like that machine a lot. (-;

And, once she "Talks" to you, the fun really begins! (-;

Happy Hunting!

Ron

I've been out in the yard doing some more testing. When I have the discrimination set just high enough so a sports foil drink cap will pop and crackle (just above 'iron'), I can clearly and easily tell the difference between pull tabs, can slaw and coins by raising the coil until one of two things happen. If the audio tone crackles and pops, it's can slaw or a pull tab. If the audio tone fades away without crackling and popping, it's a coin. Doing this doesn't work on a new nickel.

Great peice of advice Tabman, I will give this a try next time out if it ever quits raining.

Since I got back into metal detecting the Silver was my first purchase. Like new with original battery in it for $165. I used the original battery for about 20 hours. I think the original user might have put it together and never used it. Having nothing to compare it to, it was all I had. I struggled a little at first and then it started clicking for me on the tones. It has been downhilll since. While I had it I looked at several TID machines thinking they would make things even better yet (my early detectors had a TID), my wife reminded me that I just bought the Silver, a Tiger Shark, and a Propointer and said another new detector wasn't gonna happen this year. So I went out and detected and detected and detected. I got so good with the Silver I realized I never really needed the TID crutch.

In reality, for park hunting the Silver might be all you will ever need. The Silver with the stock 8" concentric does have it's depth limits, and in my mild soil I find that to be in the 7-8" range. At this point quarters and wheaties can start to be softer whispers. I am not complaining about the Silver's depth because for the price that is a very respectable depth. Heck there are detectors in the $500+ range that will be maxing at that depth. Up to it's it depth limit nothing can hide from it.

I always check all targets from two directions for clean signals. This can fool you sometimes. At one park I got into a small area full of wheaties and a couple of the signals were coin sounding clean in one direction and a little scratchy in the second direction. Just because I was finding so many wheaties, I dug. Turns out they were wheaties in the 5" range on edge.

We all know deep metal can fool any detector and the Silver is no exception. With good pinpointing you can size up the target well and when it is dead center you can wiggle over it to see if it is coin sized. This will eliminate digging the deep bigger metal. Oh ya, and this thing will find metal deep. I have found some old kids metal toys at over 12" deep in my front yard. My dad knows the history of my house and figures they are over 100 years old by knowing who lived here when.

I use headphones and batteries last forever on this thing. I am guessing 30-40 hours on that single 9 volt battery.

In a lot of areas I am going through just to look for silver first. I set disc. just short of zinc and go to town. When the area gets really trashy, turn your sensitivity down to around 7, slow the sweep speed way down, and overlap your passes. With sensitivity turned down in the trash, it will separate even better.

To make a long story short. When it comes to the Silver uMax all I can say is wow! I also have a Tiger Shark and again all I can say is wow! Tabman, on land I think you would find the Tiger unbelievable for your style of hunting, that being dig it all. When in all metal with background threshold, this thing is deep beyond your wildest dreams.

Mike5853- All I can say is- "YOUR GONNA LOVE THIS DETECTOR" We can't wait to see your videos!

Lol, Sorry about that lengthy write up Tabman, hadn't realized how old the thread was/is, lol, was probably preaching to the choir. :beers:

Happy hunting folks!

Second that, didn't realize how old the thread was!

Am glad this old thread was bumped. I learned a lot from it. Will have to try some of those techniques with the Vaq. Plus, now I'm wanting a Silver uMax!

on my test garden i have a flattened beer can at over 20 inches ,and with my umax with a sef 13 inch coil it detects the can and gives it as a bad target .
my dues also finds it but gives it as a good target .

WOW, now that is downright impressive! I will be getting a Tejon, but I will never part with my Silver uMax!

I just got my Silver umax today and put the cleansweep coil on it, wow what a detector only got to try it briefly then it rained. I think it is going to be awesome.

You almost have to try the Silver to believe it. It is just so simple and soooo effective up to it's max. depth.

What I did try was leaving it in all metal and switching into disc and roll it around to figure out what it is. I called 2 pennies. It is smooth, I have the cleansweep on it and it was my first time using both and it was great. On the weekend I'm hoping to get out for a day.

After watching this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qt4V8G6KVeI) and reading some comments on this forum I'm really thinking about purchasing the Silver uMax. It has excellent audio. I think my new Tejon needs a little brother :).

Tab did you happen to have a clean sweep coil laying around for that sweet little unit.? lol

I had one, but I sold it. Now I wish I had it back. I'm thinking about getting one for my Tejon.

I have 2 questions about the Silver uMax. Hope, someone could answer it.

1. The video above shows different sounds for trash like foil. What about other stuff? Is it possible to tell the difference between a coin and bottle cap?
2. Is there a way to increase the depth, (like super tuning for the Cibola)?

Thanks.

Some bottlecaps sound just like coins. It is the nature of the beast. They are round and can have the right conductivity. Now that being said, the only ones that fool me are twist off wine cooler type that have both sides pushed in. If your disc is set just shy of nickel you can avoid 90% of them. Bear in mind that doing this will have you missing most gold rings. If you want rings, you gotta dig trash.

The Silver is from the uMax family of detectors and is not capable of super tuning. From what I have read super tuning isn't all it's cracked up to be because you lose a lot of disc. ability. In MY mild soil the depth limit of this detector is 7", maybe 8" on a quarter with moist ground. Many might not consider this to be a depth demon, but up to it's depth limit there is very little if anything that will get by it.

Probably the thing that is more important than any of the two items you mentioned is separation ability. How easy can this detector can separate trash from an adjacent coin. This is one area the Silver uMax really excels at. I just came back from a small old park that is literally a carpet of tabs and bottlecaps. I did dig tabs, BUT the coin was in the hole with them and it sounded loud and clear. In one hole I had a dime 4" deep with a pulltab about 1" right above the dime. No problem with the Silver uMax.

The Silver is hard to beat up to it's depth limit, but if you want deeper I would suggest another Tesoro.
