Super Faint 12-46, First Barber!!!

SE-5

New member
I was "playing" in my back yard this afternoon with the CTX. I have POUNDED the yard with my AT Pro over the past year or so. Our house was built in 1926 and so far I had only found old Wheaties (and a ton of clad), 1 silver ring with some type of stone and a junk kids ring. I got a SUPER faint 12-46 and could not get it again. I went over the area/spot for about 10 minutes, finally I tilted my coil about an inch or less to one side and to my surprise I got the 12-46 again and was able to pin point it at 9 inches. Got a shovel, dug a large plug around the spot and lifted it out to one side. There standing on edge I saw what I knew was silver. In my "Oh My God" state of mind I reached in and retrieved it. Should of taken a photo right then but I was too excited! Pulled a 1900 Barber quarter, wing covering most of the E in United States. She's in pretty good shape, all the stars are clearly visible and some are still raised! To date she is my oldest coil, the closest is a 1907 Indian. I have seen some faint 12-03s - 12-46s in the past and just did not spent enough time trying to get them again. Well, it started raining hard (Seattle ~ go figure) so I figured another time since it's my back yard.

Soon as I figure out how to re-size these photos, I'll post them! (suggestions on this would be appreciated!)

Congratulations on the barber. If you are using Windows Mail, send the pictures to yourself and choose medium size. All of the pictures in the batch will be sized right, just save them and they will be ready to upload.

Congrats on finding a very nice coin. When it comes to signals one time might be a mistake. Two times is a trend.

Way to go minelab strikes again!!

You can use Photobucket.com and just crop them to resize. Nice find

Congrats!!

The best stuff frequently seems to be at the other end of iffy signals...

For uploading and resizing photos you can try a free service called Imageshack.com I use that site for all of my uploading here. :)

I had the exact same thing happen in oct at race track!! A little squeek on e way some of the time and dug a 93 barb quarter at a flat 12 inches in dry dirt. Makes you wonder hoy many dimes are in the same range. Maybe a bigger coil would help it made no difference on my E-trac so I'm reluctant to try it,any thoughts? The bigger coil was a 14 inch wot coil.

I have an AT Pro right now and have scanned it over and over front to back like you and found only a few wheat pennies, a paratrooper badge, silver ring with rupee in the middle, but nothing else since. Cant get another good signal anywhere. Not to mention I never found any silvers with it in my yard. It seems like they should be there but they have to be out of the range of the AT Pro 11" coil. Hoping to do just like you and go over those same spots where my AT Pro can't find anything and sniff them out with the CTX 3030. All I have to do now though is get that CTX. haha

The ATP is an excellent machine! don't short change it, go over to the ATP/ATG forum here and check out how others use it, setting ~ speed ~ etc. GL,HH

Thanks to Porschephile for the photos help! Going to have to try the new camera and not my cell for pictures. Looking forward to hunting in my home town of Valparaiso Indiana this summer, my brothers place was built in the late 1800s.

I have done tons and tons of research about speed~settings~etc to no avail and have tried it all Ground Balancing, Sensitivity, Swing speed, Angles, Depth Tests, Junk Removal/Re-scans you name it. 4-6" max on something like a silver half and most penny sized objects 4" max..... Trouble seeing through Iron/Junk are the main things I have trouble with it about. Even if something was below the junk, it doesn't have the depth the CTX does thus making what ever might be there out of reach for the AT Pro. The CTX seems from all the research I have done, beat it in every single way all except for one way that I can see but even that is unclear to me so far. It is the Pinpoint feature. The ATP trace hits 'em right on the head. Overall the ATP really is a great machine though. It is a jewelry magnet for sure. I'm hoping the STX picks up what what the ATP left behind. Kind of what it is notorious for by what people say. It did that for you right? ;) Oh, yeah good job on finding that Barber.

WOW, just from what you are saying, I would think something is wrong with your ATP or ???? Mine is deep seeking machine, not 10" for something on edge but washers, clad etc at 9, 10 inches if flat is routine.

that metal detector brands comparisons are encouraged and allowed on the Metal Detecting forum but not on a Brand or Model specific forum.

Thanks for your cooperation.

Congrats way to go SE-5 great find!
