Spectra... first thoughts

Well, it is different. Lots of options, lots to learn and I will take the time.... but

I have to learn to lift the coil to look at the screen, after about a hour of trying it out in the yard I have a huge neckache from the angle I have to look at the screen with the coil on the ground. It's a slight difference from the ET, which I am used to but with bad discs in my neck it is enough to make a huge diference. I will just have to learn to lift the coil before looking at the screen. I wish there was a way to add about 6" to the handle, that would really be nice for me.

Second... and I think I read something about this... the volume in my headphones, (Sun Ray Gold), jumps around a bit and in pinpoint gets really loud all of a sudden then drops off to barely audible then changes back to near normal etc. It goes back to normal when I go back out of pinpoint. I didn't notice that when using the WHP. The WHP have a better tone IMO but they are tight and the cups are a little shallow for my ears... maybe I can get some deeper cups.. or are the cuffs? Cups?? Anyway...

This machine is going to take some learning, i'm not sure about it yet. I tried lots of different things and there are some nice tack buckles and other buckles I would probably not have dug with this machine. They had soild tones but the bar graphs looked terrible.

I realize that it is WAY too soon for me to be making any judgement on the performance of this detector so take what I say with a huge grain of salt...or rice.

My only real concern is my neck and I think I can alter my practice and fix that. I'm sure that the audio thing can be fixed if I know what to do.

BTW, mine say's it is ver. 1.1, is this the latest version?

Thanks!

Julien

From the Sunray site: Mode selector switch (right side) makes the new Sun Ray Pros compatible with most metal detectors.

Try toggling this switch - you are probably running so that they are in mono mode (just guessing that's what they mean by mode - they didn't explain that). The V3 is supposed to be run with stereo headphones. There is a newer version that does allow mono phones to be run, but hopefully changing the mode on the HPs will work.

I have to use that to switch between my Tejon and Minelab. It is doing it with the wireless phones too, I just went out and tried it again. I'm getting used to the phones, they're getting more comfortable and they sound good except for when they go loud and quiet and the sound moves from one side to the other.

Is anyone else having an issue with the audio?

Thanks,

J

The detector or the phones? I got the idea from the dealer that he had just gotten the detector and phones. I guess i'll have to find out. Do you know if there is a SN or something that will tell me?

Thanks,

J

I was hoping the toggle switch would work and then you wouldn't be without your detector. The latest version of software is 1.3 and both the detector and WHP need to be updated to get full advantage. Technically you do not need the headphone upgrade as old headphone software will work with the new detector software, but if the audio wrapping around bothers you, you will want them upgraded too.

But i'll stick with the meds for now... I just need to know what to do to stop the volume from jumping high to low.

Right out of the box??

Bummer...

The website says that 1.1 is the current version, I just looked a little while ago. I'm glad you told me. Does that mean everyone has to send them back or can it be updated online?

**sigh

J

why would it need to be updated??

Is Whites knowingly selling machines that need to be updated upon delivery?

1.3 is the latest version.
It fixes the headphone problem.
It will need to be sent back.

That is just really crap... why sell me something that has to be sent back as soon as I open the box? Why would they do that??? I ordered it last Thursday, it came in yesterday, I picked it up today. I think they should replace it. That is what I am going to ask for.

J

I'm just upset at being sold a detector that needs an upgrade right out of the box when the upgrade has been available for a while and the dang thing was just ordered Thursday and delivered to the dealer yesterday... that stinks.

I used to adjust the display pod on my DFX and I just tried it on the V3. There is a little bit of play where you can adjust the pod toward you and it also rotates a little bit as well. It might be just enough to save your neck and it might be best if you call service and talk to them about doing that for you. He might be able to put a spacer in where the pod attaches to the grip for more angle yet. Service would also do the 1.3 upgrade for you at the same time. I would also talk to your dealer if he can get you the latest version, (1.3) if you didn't want to send it in.

For hardware and software problems, I would suggest trying your dealer or White's factory first for answers, you might be surprised how far back they will bend to make sure you are happy with your purchase.

That would get any of us going jbow! (I'm running with a 1.0 now and it is fine for now.) Kinda gotten used to it but have checked out the 1.3 and it is better as far as left to right modulation and volume for wireless. There have been two updates to this point, and if there is another one, don't think it would be for quite a stretch. I'm suspecting that your machine was already out in distribution channels and was a while since manufacture date? If you've got some playin' to do, 1.1 is solid and you don't have to wait to give it a work out. Whites will have your back.

Maybe I missed the information in one of your posts but I'm trying to understand why you are having difficulty seeing the screen when the coil is on the ground, are you extra tall? I'm 5' 9" and don't have any problem at all.

I would be kind of miffed too. Make them replace it.

I'm sure it will be resolved.

Thanks,

J
