Sovereign battery pack swollen?

Ted S

Well-known member
I have some property stakes to find and figured I would get the Sovereign out due to its depth capability and all metal mode. I charged the battery pack a few days ago. I had problems trying to close the batter door and figured the pack may have swollen. I left the door partially open and cranked the machine up. It worked just fine! I feel the Sovereign is better than my Equinox 900 for this job. Anyone else have this problem?? Thanks! Ted

I think the battery pack for the Sovereign is bad if it is swelled up, but I myself woulnt leave it in the Sovereign when not in use as it may start leaking.
I have a extra Sovereign XS2 for a spare or maybe see if I can do some mod to make it lighter. The person I got it has a different battery set up as it has 3 of the 3.7 volt set up and use my reg charger and it seem like it work good for the little I used it. I know there was site that made battery with the 10- 1.2 volts rechargeable for the Sovereigns that were excellent, but the demand slow down and not sure if they still make them.

Good to hear you still have a Sovereign as once you know it you keep one for a backup.

Thanks Rick! The owners manual says there was an optional AA battery holder..Have you seen one or know where to find one? Thanks! Ted

Ted if it has a drop in pack for the XS2 or XS2a I believe you need the AA packs and the bar that connect the 2 packs that make contact with the 2 springs on the battery housing also and the cover holds it tight. Now the XS and the original Sovereign is connected by a wire and the ones I like so you have a good connection and the drop ins the battery cover sometimes slides open and you loose contacts
Now the battery packs each hold 4 batteries and there is 2 of them so you have the 12 volts to the Sovereign as the rechargeable are only 1.2 volt each. being the alkaline hold 8 then there is not enough voltage to use 8 rechargeable as you only have 9.6 volts, this is why they were called alkaline packs. These pack are also used on the Garretts like the GTX 1000 and some others.
Now you would have to make a adapter if you have the plug in pack as both packs have to be connected to the one wire that feeds the Sovereign. The plug in looks like one on many charger used for lot of hand tools. I wish I could recommend the exact number they are called and then for the battery pack I used 2 of the 9 volt battery plugs so they will snap right on. and then connect to the wire that goes into the battery box if you have the wired connector, now if you have a drop in in pack you just need the connecting bar to connect the 2 batteries to and that will drop in. I might even have the connecting bar for the drop in, but not sure and would have to look though some of my stuff cause all the Sovereign that I got to resell I switched over to the plug in packs before reselling them so the person would have bad connections and blame the Sovereign.
The easiest way may try to get a rechargeable pack or see what one will cost to get new or rebuilt, Had one rebuilt for a XLT and was around 30 bucks at Interstate Battery.
