Rusty nails ID as coins.....

CC really listens to what the detector is telling him and I'd like to have some sites like his with small colonial buttons and such because I consistantly dig small scrap "good metal" and more recent tiny shirt buttons at exteme depths.
Bill posted a detailed account of exactly how to pull coins out by "knowing" the sound of a deep coin that may only hit from one angle. I hunt this way exactly and most of the time don't even look at my digital readout to confirm a deep target that only hits from 1 angle is a goodie. Alot of times I get only iron readings from deep silver but "know" there is more than iron down there despite the display showing only iron(CC also described that "sound" in detail) that lets a well trained ear pluck out a goodie out of trash.
Cap'n Kirk and myself as of lately also both dig some iron chasing those deep silvers but I'm sure he "hears" the same thing I do and as he digs he really already knows it's iron. But 1 out of 20 or so times when we stick the X1 probe into a deep hole we get a good sound that keeps us digging those extreme iffies we both knewthoughtguessed was iron to begin with ended up being a deep barber or seated.
This was a heck of a informative thread and all newbies and pros should be able to learn or relate to it.

Greg

well I didnt scroll through all the repys below but in ferrous for me the nails have to be large for -15 IM tp sound off enough to make me think about them..
but on the "wiggle" Im not fooled and circle like a hawk around the target if needed and very very very few times can the xs be fooled on iron
the tone will have a low-high-low as it goes over it... more washed out then a sweet tone.. once you dig enough you will almost be 100% what and when you want to dig.
Nothing wrong either diggin them iron pcs or nails when and if you can ... but if the site wont allow it and your really up to snuff on hearing you cannot mistake a nail... or aluminum for a good target
Being in the woods and field mostly tho I will check a site out for every target to get my bearings I guess on what it holds... then on the return trips I have a better grip on the 1000 tones I heard in there ... HH

flip to digital... it is not fooled ever just have to narrow down your sweep to the -wiggle-

Nope he couldn't hit but it was down a ways and was completly vertical. I am like you... in that I really have faith in the stock coil and know it has excellent depth in it's own right. I had an instance last year that showed how good the WOT is... I went over a very specific area that was maybe 15 yards x 15 yards with the stock coil and dug every whisper of a coin because some guys had told us they found IH, Mercs in that area and 'cleaned' it out... I tied the WOT on and went back over it a dug one of the deepest Mercs I have ever dug along with two buffalo nickels. The thing is the Merc signal was very repeatable but you could tell it was deep just because of the sound. IMHO, It's an awesome coil that if you use it when the trash and mineralization permits you almost always come away smiling. I usually detect an area with the stock coil and when I find a good producing area I'll pound it from different directions, etc. When I'm convinced the area is done producing coins I'll go grab the WOT and almost always come up with a coin or two. Until your used to the WOT in trash it can confuse the he^^ out of you...

Snuff,
Yesterday I retured to a small area in a site that has produced a lot of silver this year. It is getting very difficult to get good targets that "jump" out at you. Having found so much silver, one justs knows that there must be a few more that have been missed. Today,I moved real slowly and dug those deep targets that hit almost to the upper left on the screen (probably about 27 ferrous and 28 or greater conductive if one were using digital). In an area of about 15feet by 30feet, out came 5 wheats from 1909 to 1920 and an 1892 barber dime. I am sure that there are still more in that area.
One might think that it is a good philosophy to cover a good site in phases where phase 1 is to get the easy stuff quickly, phase 2 get the easiest stuff remaining and finally look for the stuff that no one else will bother to dig.
HH,
Glenn

I alwasy go over an area in phases. Get the missed shallow targets then go back for the deep ones that most people are not going to find.
Also from a different direction and under different soil conditons. Iron is more bothersome when wet and silver will come through in iron when the soil is dry as the iron is not as conductive so masks less.

The only thing I usually mess with is the sensitivity and I usually back it down some when I am using the WOT. I run manual 99% of the time. I honestly don't know what my buddy running when he couldn't hit the dime... stupid me never thought to ask him at the time. I'll have to get him to check some of my WOT hits the next time I'm using it.

Testing the detech 18". I'm hunting with two fellow explorer users so it will make for great comparisons. Usually I can't stand any other coil but the stock so that is a challenge and also it will depend on what site is available to hunt. About have of the plan the fields would work, the other half not. Won't know until I get there.
Any guesses on this coil? Honestly I think it will be terrible on the small stuff I usually find and won't be any deeper than the stock. If I'm using it, it will be in an open area where finds could be anywhere and deep. I keeping the sens. very high and ajusting the IM until stable. Dropping the sense will defeat the entire purpose so even if I have to go to -8 or -6 the detector will see just as deep in clean ground on any target the big coil will see anyway.

at a site remember the depth and volume of the sound, then only dig that depth or deeper and if you hear a target with a sharp deep high LOUD tone when it should be a low volume signal, you will know something aint right. You can set up your back buttom to put you in ferrous and if it's high in both you dig. The only ones that are tricky are nails bent in a curve. We are not all bless like CC who hunts fields with a shovel, two scoops it out kick the dirt back in and bend over at the waist only to pick up the target. Most of us hunt parks that have pull tabs all over the ground and nails every couples of inches under the ground and it takes more time to cover back the hole by hand on your knees then it takes to make the hole. If I was to dig over a 1000 holes in two months on my knees I would change this hobby, must be nice to hunt with a shovel you luck guy you..

and my last couple of times out I have been keeping the thought of most of you guys being park hunters while I hunt and it would be quite a bit harder. I didn't realize how many iffys I am able to either kick some dirt off or pry a quick plug to check just to make sure. I'm guessing those same iffys are the ones you guys stand over and scratch your head about. No doubt If we were in each others place the roles would be reversed.

Believe me CC I am not trying to talk you into using anything you don't want to... I've dug BB sized objects with my WOT. I haven't noticed any difference in sensitivity to small objects with the WOT. I use the WOT when trash content permits... I have dug everything down to a half dime (in coins) with the WOT. I have dug smaller objects but really don't pay attention to them because I am not a relic hunter per say. I use the WOT alot in the spring when I am covering farm fields and invest a minimal of time. Good luck I'll be curious to see how you make out.

This is just due to my inexperience and I need to sit down and read the manual through again now that I have used the Explorer for about four (?) weeks. The difference between Ferrous and Conductive seems to be obvious but why would you check in both modes to see if it's a good target? I do not have a handle at all on using the Ferrous setting.
Thank you Arturo.
-Neil

Can you? I have never played with the options a whole lot but thought you had to go into the menu to change from conductive to ferrous. Even when you lock in a program I thought it was only a disc. pattern and went with what the current sound setting is at.

You will never really get your ears if you continue to switch back in forth. (my opinion) I was conductive for quite a while, than changed to ferrous and decided I didn't like it, than had to adjust back to conductive. That is likely the first thing you have to figure out on the explorer and from there you can slowly tweak things, sort of fine tuning. Once you're feeling good at a setting continue to drop your IM and raise the sens. The only time I was ever in a rush with this detector was the first few weeks and I paid the price of many empty holes and lots of frustration. It's been well over 3 years now (maybe close to 4) and it has really only been the last year where I have finally found what I like and it will be the setting I use for good. I have tried plenty of other detectors and played around on the explorer and it is a pretty good feeling now that I can concentrate on research more than trying to find the best relic detector to suit my needs. I have 2 original explorers, and 3 stock coils, so I hope I am set for a very long time. Something quite incredible would have to come on the market before I would give up my ole floppy Boy I love that detector!

Ha, Ha, If your last adjustment is to set either Ferrous or Conduct then hit detect button you will be in your normal hunt setting, now if you hit the Back button you will go to the screen where you select either one again, test the iffy target in both and decide to dig or not to dig, now for some of us we don't have to worry about iffy targets, we just put the shovel to the ground and flip the iffy target out in a couple of seconds. You can't take a shovel to the park if you want to go back to hunt there.
