Put M3 into play…..

Perhaps it depends on the nature of EMI? In my neck of the woods, 6" is magnitudes quieter than stock. But I can imagine (hypothetically) something like a radar or VLF comms blinding both.
I never really considered radar, but this site is less than a mile from the bay and only a dozen miles from a couple of different military installations. I don't see the same issues at the other parks I go to, but they are all much further inland.

Does that bay have a submarine base? If so, that could be your ultimate source of VLF EMI.

So how accurate is that technique using an AM radio? Wouldn’t EMI make more sound ?
Quite accurate actually.
In the AM radio there is an iron ferrite bar with wire wrapped around it as the AM antenna.
The bar is quite directional.
When listening to a station. You'll notice it comes in better depending which direction it's facing.
All EMI is a form of radio frequency interference.
From powerlines, electric dog fence to WiFi to satellite dish transmitters. Even bad sparkplug wires on a car.
Here's a thread where I try to explain it.

Thanks, love learning cool stuff like that.

Your welcome.
I love teaching it.
For an example.
Take your AM radio. Tune it to the bottom of the band. Around 550. With no stations to be heard.
Your TV remote which is a UV light transmitter.
The LED is the UV light transmitter to send signals to your TV or stereo. Hold your AM radio about a foot from the remote. Now push any button on the remote. You will hear the remote giving a series of beeps. The Short wires going to the led act as an antenna and radiates the pulses going to the led.
EMI is Everywhere.
Try turning the radio and a little further away.
You'll see the AM radio is directional.
Another interesting thing.
Looking at the remotes led. You can't see the light.
Look at it with your phones camera. Depending on how well your camera filters UV light. You should be able to see the light pulses it's transmitting.
Older digital cameras are more sensitive to UV light.
Try it. Let me know.

I noticed something not so related but interesting if i look at neighbors security camera mounted on their house across the street at night say through my phone camera or naked eye you cant see it. But i know its there. But looking through another security camera from my side/house it lights up like a really bright light. It seems the IR light they emit at night for night vision is not visible to the naked eye but really visible to other cameras using IR at night. Not so sure how that whole thing works but im o there are multiple ways of “seeing” things in the air the eye can’t see or hear what tour ears can’t hear

Yup
Most surveillance  camera's are designed to see IR light. They rely on it to see in the dark. And excuse me. The TV remote is IR. Jumbled my light spectrums. Though deer do see UV quite well.
Most camera's are designed to block UV and IR light to a degree. A camera used to take photos of space. Astrography. The filters are removed.
Astrography modified camera.

A bit of knowledgeable in astrophotography.
A hobby I'm just getting into.

Went out this morning for a quick hunt up on campus. EMI Hell Zone was in overload, never experienced anything like this morning.
4khz choppy so reduced Sens clear down to 10 before I decided it wasnt worth it. Tried all all three M modes, all bad. Tried Beach dry and wet, nada. Gave up. One thing I did notice that I didnt know and now learned. I usually lay the detector down on its side as trying to set it upright just doesnt work most of the time. If the coil is facing your plug and out say 12-18” apparently the low freq can make the carrot start vibrating when you turn on and go in the hole. Tried it several times and after I adjusted to make the coil face away farther it would stop.
I sure would like to know what the hell they do inside that big building………
Mr.Ron,
You sure it’s not coming from the radio and TV center?

Jimmy,
I have no idea. Since reporting it the intensity has dropped tremendously so I’m guessing they found something and fixed it. The TV is behind the large Admin building but there is a radio station on the top floor. I’ve yet to take the small hand crank radio up there, my bad.

I would think this radio and TV center would wreak havoc on you while hunting the Admin area.

A bit of knowledgeable in astrophotography.
A hobby I'm just getting into.

Sorry guys to trample on anyones post. Odanscoils funny you mention that, i was into photography most my life just this past month was thinking of possibly getting a inexpensive telescope for occasional space viewing just not even sure what to look for, get, etc
If you could let me know anything would help possibly message me thanks

Something related though. Where i am because of the sandy soil and rural areas there is very little underground utilities. Even a lot of the water is well and septic for sewer. Power lines, cable run in the air. So i have some really high power lines going through my neighborhood a few streets away that are from a power plant(nuclear) about 30 miles away that help power the area. How far can the emi from such lines effect the detector, and what about just the regular power lines on the poles going through the streets.
Was noticing the power line from the pole to the side of my house has about a few inches away the cable line for my internet. If it was radiating that much emi to effect a detector hundreds of feet away wouldn’t it effect the internet line inches away from it

I explained most of that in this thread.
If you have questions after reading that let me know on that thread.

That all depends on what you want to see.
The moon and planets are my primary interest.
How much can you spend is another primary figure.

The pic is of the TV station. Just to the N (you’re looking S) about 50-100 yards is a flat lawn area which used to be a baseball field a long time ago, no EMI. To the W is the old Arboretum, EMI is only close to the building. The TV station has a tower two miles (crow flys) SE of the station. Distance from TV to the EMI Hell Zone is maybe 200 yards NW. There is that FM radio station on the top floor of the AdBldg which is somewhat middle of the building, I do not know where their antenna is located.

Yeah same, moon and planets for couple hundred dollars if possible lol
Here's a couple starter scopes. More than a couple hundred. Plus you'll need a good eyepiece set with a moon filter. This is a good spot to read and learn. Just register. You'll enjoy this. Or find you hate it.
If you find anything on eBay, pawnshops or anywhere used. PM me and I'll look at it to see if it's any good. Hate getting junk and ripped off for damaged optical tubes.
This one is a tracking mount. Meaning it will keep what your viewing in your field of view. Not to difficult to set up and align.

This is a Dobson. Non tracking.
You point and view.

This is the cheapest tracking mount. Actually a version of this was my first tracking mount years ago. They don't make these anymore. I wish they did. Fantastic for mounting a camera. Camera's with a large enough zoom lens do pretty good on planets and moon. 150-400 mm size.
You would be disappointed by anytthing less.
Without large enough aperture/diameter of the tube. And junk eyepieces. The view is terrible.
Without tracking. You don't have enough time to show others before the Earth rotates away from objects your viewing. Sadly this gets way more expensive than detecting. Eyepieces I'd love to have can reach over a grand each. I have a few that averaged around a couple hundred apiece.
You maybe able to find these on eBay or Astromart.

Good starter eyepiece set.

WoW Ronstar.
You've got a lot of interference around that location. And a good reason there's absolutely good targets others missed.
Your idea of running 4khz maybe the only option at the worst spot.
Sorry I got a bit off subject.
I have toooo many darn hobbies and anxious to share information. Again.
I'm sorry about that.
