Property owner wants all of your finds

Interesting responses here. I especially like Ron(Mich) and Sonny, who just outright lies and hands them some worn out Mercury dimes if allowed to hunt. At least he's upfront with his deceit. I've done that myself, so I can relate.

This is why I'm more an' more with Steve(MS) these days, when he says: "...but I do ask property owners about fields, woods and old abandoned home sites, I really like the challenge of old house sites that either the structure no longer stands or is abandoned."

On-edge, the point is it is bad PR to to challenge any property owner because they won't let you hunt on their property.Again there are many hunter's who feel the same way as I do about this problem. On my farm one gate left open will have a horse running down the street into traffic a injury or death to the horse and a person plus lawsuits Do research on parks that's where most of the good finds are.Ask this property owner and again its No. HH Ron

ron,i agree with you, negligence of a detectorist is never any good for this hobby!
and i have heard of instances were live stock fences have been left open, and holes not being filled - i have witnessed first hand, not good!
my apologies for misunderstanding your point in the previous post, have a good day and HH to all!

Marcomo,I have been a treasure hunter since 1970 and I'm still in the learning process.I have met a lot of people in this hobby and made a lot of friends and even upset some people.Just because you are a treasure hunter that doesn't earn my trust and consideration or anyone Else's.I only hunt properties where I'm invited and if I make a deal with someone about items I find, the verbal contract its kept. You are cheating yourself by keeping the good finds that's not yours.A hunter that goes knocking door to door like a vacuum cleaner salesman is a pest and an embarrassment to the hobby(just a bum with a metal detector)sorry but that's life. How about we take it a step further, why not knock on the door and ask the owner if you can come in and check their couch for pocket change. Happy Hunting Ron

It seems that with about 98% of all land being held in private hands you will have to ask for permission on some sights.

Since I don't go knocking door to door like a vacuum cleaner salesman I won't take offense over the bum with a metal detector comment.

What bothers me is your since I don't do it no one else should either attitude.

I know you're a veteran treasure hunter and a good one. You do well in parks and that's great. Bit I prefer to hunt a different way.

I never hunt private property without permission, and I observe everything in our hobby's code of ethics.

If you think I'm rude or whatever other names you want to call me, what more can I say?

I'm sorry you feel that way.

Xlt-user,to gain permission for these sites requires networking with Family,Friends and Acquaintances from work and other places.Like it or not we are in a hobby you where get blamed for everything other hunters do. Thanks HH Ron

Marcomo,I'm not picking on you or any other hunter. The point don't approach stranger's to search their yards.I have a friend who is a local dealer that calls me and we and others meet at an area and hunt.We drove by this old early 1800's house early one Sunday morning and my friend has an idea let's knock on the door and ask the owner if we can hunt their yard.My reaction No! this property owner has worked all week and during breakfast two stranger's knock at the door and want to dig his yard up great plan Jethro.Anyway I hope you succeed as a treasure hunter with the right equipment and hunting methods those old parks are still producing old seated coins and lots of jewelry.By the way I have a friend who invites me to search his house which use to be an old one room school house early 1800's and has told me keep what ever you find, but if I ever did have a real valuable find I would feel obligated to give it to the property owner. Thanks Happy Hunting Ron

Ron - I'm sure we can agree on a lot of things that are bad for the hobby. Hunting private property without permission, hunting cemeteries, hunting federally protected historic sites and leaving holes or otherwise damaging property are ones that come to mind off the top of my head.

One that we won't agree on is seeking permission to search home sites.

You're not going to change my opinion and I'm not going to change yours.

But remember that every friend we have was at one time a stranger.

I only do what I said when the day is done and the owner figures I might have found something good or his family steps in and wants all my finds. 99% of the people don't want anything other than to see what I found but when the owner renigs on his original agreement and wants it all or the best of my finds then alls fair in love and war. I believe in a man keeping his word. JMHO

oh boy,i just can't help myself
how many detectorist have been aproached by land owners,i do wonder?
we all should treat oneanother as "we wish to be treated"

You haven't heard it all yet. When the "experts" come out of the woodwork and proclaim how it should be (no exceptions), then the rest of us just don't bother to post. I go through this on the E Trac forum too. Wait till the dust clears and move on to another subject:clapping: PM me if you want to know how I handle permission.
