I have an XP MI6, Garret carrot and original black one, a Whites TRX, and a Fisher F Pulse. The XP pairs with my Deus which is really nice but is also excellent as a stand alone one. The carrot seems to be a bit more reliable than the original but you couldn't tell by me. My original still works fine. Some prefer the original because it is instant on and instant off. The carrot takes a little longer, as does the others, but seems to be more reliable from what I read. The carrot detects off the point and sides about equally, making it a good choice when paired with large coils, deep holes and large piles of dirt excavated from the hole. The TRX is the deepest I have but hardly detects off the side at all. This is good for people using a screwdriver to recover coins and who can pinpoint pretty close already with their detector. The F Pulse is almost as deep but detects deeper on the side than the Whites.
That said, I don't think you can go wrong with any of these. I have had no trouble with any of them and could probably be content if I only had any one of the 5.
Oh, I forgot, when I purchased my first detector, a Fisher F2, I got a black teknetics pinpointer with a tuning knob on it. It hardly detected off the point or the side. When I got my first black Garrett pinpointer, it was a world of difference.
