New to detecting: first finds

Hello everybody. I got my first detector about 2 months ago (GTAX 550), and I'm hooked! I've stayed fairly close to home, and I have managed to find some cool things. Last night I counted up my finds and I'm now over 600 total coins. Most of those are clad coins, mostly 70's and 80's pennies. Dug up 20 wheat pennies, a bunch of Canadian pennies from the 20's - 60's, 5 silver rings, and 22 silver coins. The best silver so far are the 1902 Barber half dollar, 1929 standing liberty quarter, and 1906 Canadian quarter. Found some neat relics, musket ball, other bullets, spoons, toy cars.....a 1923 "dog tax" pet ID. Anyway...like I said I'm hooked. I'm going to try to post some pics in this thread, hope it works.

Are there any other GTAX 550 users here? I have a few questions if anyone could help.

Wow. Pretty impressive. I'm especially impressed with an average of one silver coin every 2 1/2 or 3 days. Those are pretty rare and hard to find. I'm jealous of your barber half!

Very nice finds there JC! I'm impressed! Welcome aboard and HH to ya!

Great job and a very high ratio of silver coins to modern. I envy you finding that Barber half. I haven't found a half dollar of any sort all year. A Barber would blow my mind. Keep posting.

Saaaaaaaaaaaweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!

Thanks for the replies everybody. Yeah, when that Barber half came out of the ground I couldn't believe it. It made the rest of my detecting day hard because I kept stopping to take it out and look at it in disbelief haha.

Orion42...have you found gold with your 550? If so, how does it register on the screen? I worry that I'm missing gold...I guess I should really test it out with my wife's gold jewelry...

I've hit a small gold chain bracelet with it. If I remember right, it showed up around 5 on the scale. Test it out with a variety of pieces if you can, because different sizes and quality can show up in different areas of the scale. Good hunting!

John

You doing great and I like the way you displayed those coins for the photos. Nice silver count.
