New to detecting: first finds

So I was out hunting today...drove all around trying to find a decent place. No luck, just a pile of modern pennies. I decided to hit a part of the golf course when I got home and things got much better. I found a silver dime 1945 right away. Then, and this is a first for me...an Indian head penny! I was hoping it was pre-1900, but it turned out to be 1902...I'll take it!!! Its in really great shape.

I got my brother a detector for his birthday a month ago, and after trying it out for 5 or 6 hours he found his very first coin. An 1882 Indian head penny! I was a wee bit jealous, but I was really happy that he found something so cool on his first outing, because he is getting hooked now too. Now I'm thrilled to have an Indian head too.

I tried to post pics, but my computer is being lame...

Here are the pics of my Indian head penny, I think I fixed my computer glitch. I went back to where I found the Indian head penny tonight, and I found another one. It's a little dirty, but the date is 1900...sooo close to breaking the 19th century barrier.

Those Indian Head pennies are something else. I found a 1901 IH in my front yard and my first impression before I cleaned off the dirt was darn, it's just a penny. When I cleaned it up and saw it was an Indian Head from 1901, it became one of my proudest possessions. Only worth about a dollar, but it's priceless to me. If I ever figure out how to post pictures, I'll post it. My computer is not lame, but I seem to be when it comes to anything besides email and posting comments.

Why do Indian head pennies register less than a penny, maybe a 7 on the screen? They are the same size as regular pennies, and they are mostly copper. I have found 3 now, and they all register the same...strange
