New metal detecting permit

How about cutting a horseshoe "lid". I don't consider that a plug. That is what we do so you don't sever all of the roots and the grass stays green even during the dry season. Since we hunt people's yards, we sure don't want to leave brown spots. Be sure to put the dirt on a rag or something so you can put it all back into the hole. When you are done retrieving a target, you should not be able to tell where you dug, if done right.

Yes sir Larry, thats the way I dig my holes. But I call it a flap cut. I put all the dirt on a towel and pour it back into the hole, lay the flap back over and tap it down with my foot. You never know I was there.

Hey guys not sure if I can explain this right, will try. When I first started 30+ years ago a fellow showed me a way to use a probe that left no signs and brought the target to the surface. I use a long bladed phi lips screw driver (8 to 10" long 3/8 or 1/4" dia.) After finding the target gently push past the target about an inch. Then put the palm of your hand over the handle. Start a rotating motion like a mini hurricane. This will walk the target up the probe to the top. All that is left is a small hole that is easily covered with a foot steep. Try it.......it works. Soft ground preferred.

Good for you Bob.

.................hasn't anybody noticed anything new in the right hand corner of Nancy's posts for the past week?

You bet! That's the only way! HH to all, Nancy

Holy Moly Batman..... Way to go Nancy.. HH Dennis in Idaho

i think we are all aware of that, however you need to preach to all the "a******s! that never learned how to properly "recover" a coin in a public venue!..the guys that have been hunting for a long time KNOW how to "recover" a coin properly,AND leave an area better than they found it!..think about it!... what "die hard" hunter WANTS to cut his nose off to spite his face!

(h.h!)

right!..emphasis on SOME!...THAT is the problem!..unfortunately,like most things in life, there are ALWAYS some who f***!.it up for everyone else!

absolutely correct!..been doing this for over thirty years, and you cannot tell where i have dug!..a plug with a hinge so as to NOT sever the roots!..all you need to do!
like johnny dep says:..i like it!..simple!..easy to remember!..keep ya IN the hobby, and never draw the ire of the "town fathers!"

(h.h!)

you would require an x-ray device that "sees" into the ground, take a picture of the target, then use the pic as a fantastic conversation piece at parties to tell people you found this terrific 5.00 gold coin in the park on main st,anytown,u.s.a.!...

(h.h!)

you can hunt the parks in my town anytime!..no permit needed!..if ya do it right!..never know you were there!

(h.h!)

You can hunt the parks in my town to without a permit. HH Dennis in Idaho

We worked to hard to get the permit to detect in that cities parks to take that attitude. Remember is was illegal to hunt the parks before but with a permit we can hunt to our hearts content, so its a no brainer on whether we get a permit or not. HH Dennis in Idaho[quote jmaryt]that's good news!..dennis!..screw the permit!

best of luck dennis!..i should have emphasized in my post that i was talking in "general" terms!..you know it is the beginning of the end when the powers start passing ordinances requireing permits to hunt in the parks!..it is ALWAYS the actions of a few that spoil it for the many!

regards!

Seriously I tried to explain how to use the probe on page two of this post, along with the kind of tools required. Check around some of your metal detecting clubs there has to be someone that knows how to explain it to you. It looks hard but once you learn it you will be able to retieve coins using the probe and not having to cut plugs. HH Dennis in Idaho

Dennis, you did a real good job of explaining how to use the probe. I went out to a park yesterday that I've been afraid to hunt in because of digging, and use the probe to retrieve coins. I did great its a little slower then digging but it did pay off.

Hey thats great. Using a probe is not my favorite method but it works when its the only way you can dig. After awhile it will become really easy for you. hi dennis!..no reflection on you personally,or an attempt to undermine what you have accomplished in YOUR location, but we DON'T have to use probes where i am because experienced hunters HERE KNOW how to dig properly, and have never required a permit to access PUBLIC property,as a result!..just the way it is!..that's all!..this harks back to a previous post, when i said that a few a******S!..screw it up for everybody else!
