MXT vs DFX

Bryan Jon

New member
What are the pros and cons of these two machines? I live in Maryland , on Kent Island and am looking for an all around md. Coins, relics, beach, jewelry etc. This will be my 1st detector. I have read enough to fill a library at this point, yikes
Thank you all

have you MD'd Before? The DFX is a Great machine. There is a tremendous learning curve that may take you a while to master. The MXT which I own now, is by far in my opinion the best all around turn on and go machine. The controls are pretty straight forward. It will take some getting used to but I think it is better than the DFX. Another good point to both machines is the search coils all interchange. The MXT is a monster coin and relic machine in my Opinion!!

I personnaly would recommend the MXT hands down!!

I am a MXT owner like EROK. I feel that both machines are Equal. Each one shines in certain fields you can use a MXT at the beach, but the DFX will blow it away.Ive heard you can nugget shoot with the DFX,but the MXT will blow it away. http://nevada-outback-gems.com supports the MXT and has an excellent comparision of these 2 detectors (advantages/disadvantages). The DFX has a learning curve to be mastered, but when you do, look out treasure!.I chose the MXT because i can just twist my wrist and tweak a knob, and continue on. Maybe someday i will get a DFX or it's predecessor. But for now.i got to master the MXT.

Oh ! on the nevada outback gems site.Once the page loads.Look down on the lower left of all the listings, and you will see the MXT link:detecting:

Thank you EROK and Tom!
I live on the Maryland Eastern Shore, so I will be doing more beach hunting than nugget hunting I would think. (nuggets would be great though ;) )
I am new to MD'ing EROK, so I really want to make only one purchase and have something to really grow with and into. Thank you both again.

Here is a website you can go to that has some in depth material about the MXT.
You can print it all out if your disposed to and put in a note book.

Ah ha. You already posted the link.
I wish there were more links like this one to discuss the other Whites detectors.

What about the XLT? How would you compare that one against the MXT.
I saw one used forsale and thought about maybe trying it but decided against it.

Robert, best thing for you to do is READ as much as you can. There are many forums to visit. You must choose what fits our needs. Mine was the MXT..Read brother read..

I have the XLT and it is a Great machine too. I bought the MXT and have not used the XLT at all. I actually have a buyer for it right now!!

MXT all the way and get the 6X10 DD also the 4X6 shooter or the 5.3 coil for trashy areas

Yea, I've heard the DFX has a high learning curve. Thats really why I shyed away from it.
I've had some great luck with the MXT, but I really need to get either the 4x6 or the 6x10 DD coil.
I have the 5.3 coil and its ok but for mineralized ground that I frequently seem to hit I need the
Double D coils. Just can't make up my mine which is best to get.

Thank you all for the great info so far. It really is a tough decision to make when you come down to it. If I could afford it, well I would just buy both.
I can't so, MXT or DFX, decision, decisions!!

I notice more say the MXT which I too agree with as it is a fun detector to use and it does real well and in most cases will out perform the DFX. Now where the DFX may be better is if you are able to know this detector and all of its controls and what they do. If set right it will work great and is a great detector, but if it is not set for the area then it wont do as good. I have been told in factory settings the MXT will out perform the DFX, but if the DFX is set right for the area you are in then the DFX will do better.
Comes down to if you like to turn on a go the MXT is the one you want, but if you want to tweak and try different settings then the DFX will be the one you want.In fact if the price was the same on the XLT,MXT and the DFX I would pick the MXT without a second thought.

I have used both. Go with the MXT knobs and switches are intuitive. Don't get in to the idea that more gain means more depth. Get to know your ground conditions and the way your machine operates before moving off the preset gain (advise for a newby only.) The menu's of the DFX are a pain and one thing effects another (unseen.) With knobs and switches they don't really effect the others others settings. As you get to know it you just have to look to see if it is set right. My biggest problem is remembering to set my probe switch back to the coil. MXT runs hotter. Get a good used one off Ebay if you want to save some money and you may be able to get a full outfit for one price. I have bought a number of machines that way had good luck with most all of them. My worst luck was with a Explorer II it looked thrashed but worked good, living in Vegas I took it to Minelab in Vegas and they replaced the whole body looked brand new when I got it. IMHO the MXT is easier to use and a better machine than the Explorers I have had. On ebay look for a little used machine. White's are very well made. So get the MXT and "The MXT Edge" by Jeff Foster and you are set for many years. I collect the pointers that I like print them out and read them several times until what is being said sinks in. Then save them to reread. If you are interested I will email what I have to you.

You know,,,,,,,Something just hit me,,,,,most of us here are older and were born in an analog world...and the world has gone digital..I think maybe,,,younger generations will adapt to the dfx much easier. When we were in school,we only dreamed of space (until john Glenn) and technology. Schools now are high tech and kids are raised with this complicated techno stuff LOL....Then again, todays kids have problems with analog..Ask any 8 year old what time is it? Most kids have trouble with analog clocks (until we teach'em);)

Its simple. The MXT!! Just do it. You won't regret it. But yea, its hard to decide sometimes. Just take the plunge. If you don't like the MXT you'll find it has a high resale value. You could unload it it a heart beat but you won't.:)-)

Don't use the stock headphones that white's supplies with the detector ( see the thread about car horns)..;)
