mxt is about to drown

I would call the MXT and GMT White's "Hot Rods". If you need/want something quieter see about trading in your MXT for a M6.Still a great maching, but not so noisy.

Great advice !! I'm really liking the M-6 , the tones are awesome . The 6x10 and 4x6 DD coils are my favorites on it .I was originally going to get an MXT but a really great deal popped up on this one and I'm primarily a coinshooter so I went for it .I'm glad I did .

I love the 4X6 and 6X10 on my MXT.

In response to mncricket's question on the threshold. There isn't one exact right setting. You need to set it every time you start out. It just needs to be barely audible, just loud enough to hear it rise slightly to deep targets that are too deep to show on the TID and too deep to give a loud audible response. Also, if you pay attention you'll notice it nulls out when over targets that are being discriminated. That shows there is a target, but probably nothing you wish to dig. I've gotten to where I don't mind the slight hum in the background at all, in fact somewhat prefer it compared to a silent search machine that makes you wonder sometimes if it is working. Hope this is helpful.

A lot of good advice except for the $200 offer, that would be stealing! I picked up the very first MXT in the country and it has worked great ever since. I use it primaly for nugget hunting but is a great multi purpose machine, one of the top three in my opinion. Keep at it and like a few suggested take it back to a local dealer and have it checked out. Sounds like you may have a bad loop if it is chattering all the time.

try detecting with your trigger switch in the forward position. This will cut out the chatter from the discriminated items.

I had the same problem. Turns out it was a faulty coil. Coil was replaced and all is OK. Try another coil. there have been a few bad coils, I am referring to the 6x10 DD.
I couldn't turn up the sensitivity beyond 7 and the Hyper Sat could not be accessed at all.
All is good now and I love the MXT.

Mxt and xterras are comprable. Both good machines. Xterras are better coin shooters because of lower frequency but the Mxt has prospecting mode plus salt mode and better id system.Wich only the xterra 705 or 70 has Pinpointing of the best on both.

I agree with the Mxt being a great machine. I am using it on salt beaches....I run 8 or so on gain, 2 to 3 on disc, I have my threshold turned up pretty high compared to normal ground, I have a consistent loud hum, it cuts down on the small chatter I usually here. I do have to re-check targets a lot, but I don't go as deep as if my gain were at 6. Look at my recent post, 3 gold rings in the past 2 weeks, 2 of them have diamonds. I have used mine in the states (Georgia) and it ran stable. Some people do have problems with there's from the get go. I also run Relic mode, for me, I like the tone it offers more than coin and jewelry. I always check the Vdi for solid, repeatable beeps.

Good luck,
Chris

Is that a type o or are you telling me that you get better depht with the gain set on 6 than you do at 8. I thought the higher the gain the better the depth.

I have also found the MXT very difficult to interpret when I first got it. I still sometimes feel that way, but I have kept at it over the past three years and finally have a better understanding of it. I certainly did not feel it was as simple as a machine as all the claims were. There were times when I first got it that I wanted to throw it in a river as well. My buddy has one and has made many great finds with his. And for some reason, I guess it was just me and my ability to interpret all the information it was giving. I've done much better with the MXT now that I feel a bit more comfortable understanding all that chattiness. But as someone on here stated, I have many experiences with the VDI all over the place, sometimes with a nice good tone, then the iron, and back and forth....it drives me nuts trying to figure out if I want to bother digging it or not. In my opinion (notice I say IMO), I find that sometimes it becomes information overload trying to decifer out all the different readings....for me. I know and understand others feel differently. In a modern age with computers and our careers being information overload on a daily basis, I choose to sometimes put the MXT on the rack and revert back to my simple, easy to use, easy to understand, deep seeking detectors that will find just as much as my MXT will find. And no, I'm not looking to sell it for $200 as others are stating - I'll keep it thanks. However I will admit that when I'm not in the mood to interpret multiple information feeds and I just want to have fun, the MXT will get left behind. My MXT has it's uses, especially when I'm in some serious hot mineralized soil for relic hunting in Central VA, but when I'm in good or moderal soil, I break out the simple machines that will find the goodies just as easily as my MXT....and without all the information overload.

Hi All

Just thought I'd throw in my two cents on the chatter/noise with the MXT. I've had mine for about three years and would have to say that many times I am overwhelmed by the partial signals (from rejected targets) that you can get with the unit. My solutions to make the unit more usable for me are to strictly use the elliptical DD coils in 10 and 6 inches. The 6 inch will really cut down on the chatter. I also coin hunt in relic mode with the trigger forward and this cuts back another layer of chatter. Over the course of all this I've found some coins and jewelry too. When you do go over something good you will generally get a good solid high tone and repeatable VDI number. Lately some deeper iron objects 6"+ cans etc will give a high tone and a good number. So l have a good collection of trash also.

Jeff Foster's book on the MXT is definitely worth a read. Lots of good stuff.

I bought the unit for both prospecting and coin hunting and have had more success with coins and jewelry so far. I have taken it to Alaska and run side by side with the GMT and found more gold with the GMT. I would get a good signal with the GMT and run the MXT over it wide open and just barely hear the nugget. I would also get lots of false signals with light but normal bumps on rocks and brush with the MXT. The iron Grunt audio discrimination on the GMT seemed to work better in the Alaska test than my MXT. I have suspected that my 10" coil may be part of the problem and probably need to send in to have whites take a look at. My trac/ground/salt switch also got poked in on the trip back from AK and needs to be repaired. Unit is still working but won't lock in the ground position now. That being said I tend to run in Lock most of the time anyway, seems to cut down on the noise.

My brother who has a Quattro and we have hunted side by side and switched machines to see what lies over on the dark side. I found the Quattro to also be noisy and hard to interpret with all the flute music. So we decide you can either listen to the "flute music" of the Quattro or the "pig squealing" of the MXT.

All that being said I won't be selling mine I'll just try and learn how to use it better and maybe even get one of the S.E.F. coils and see how that goes.

OOO MY GOODNESS NO!!!!!!!!!!! Been using my MXT for about 4 years now and have detected beside and behind other brands and I would not change it for any I have seen. I too had trouble when I started out and I read in this forum about Jeff Foster's book The MXT Edge, ordered it and It changed my whole experience. I detect in MN in the summer and in AZ in the winter in mineralized and unmineralized ground and it will work anywhere. Get the hang of it and you too will love it!!!!

I would Guess you would find more gold with the GMT. It was intended to strickly be a gold
nugget machine. My understanding is the MXT has some of the same circuitry but not
the entire package. There are a lot of people out there useing the MXT to find gold and most
of them are happy campers. I have yet to try mine for nugget hunting.

Wrong.....the MXT is a better detector for gold nuggets. The GMT and GB2 have a higher freq and will not detect nuggets as deep. The MXT Gold Prospecting Mode is the same circuitry as the GMT but with a 15khtz freq (crystal) which means it will detect deeper. I have used both machines and have gone behind a GMT this past summer. I found nuggets but the GMT found none. However, that might have been the operator of the GMT .... For an all around detector that can actually pick up gold chain necklaces (many cannot) or gold nuggets as small as 1 grain, the MXT cannot be beat.

The GMT has an operating freq of 48khtz, the GB2 50khtz and the MXT 14.8khtz. The higher frequency gold detectors will find smaller gold at shallower depths. The advantage of the MXT in gold nugget detecting is it's greater depth with the lower frequency. I found a 1/2 grain picker at 3 inches with the MXT. The next smallest thing would be gold dust. I believe that is why I was finding small nuggets at 6 inches when the GMT in front of me was finding none.

First of all make sure you have not got the tracking locked. That can stuff you up as soon as you turn it on if it never gets to balance. I believe it turns on at a 50% setting. A lot of the gold country I use my mxt on has a mineralisation of 84 to 75 which i'm told is pretty hot. I usually hunt in auto tracking unless I hit a patch of small targets. If you had the tracking in auto track then there definately is a problem with the detector.

I have limited use of friends minelabs and lots of use on the mxt. when minelabs discriminate a target and shut it out, you don't hear a noise. On my MXT when a target is discriminated out it gives a "chat" of a noise. This is just how it works. I have learned to use this to my advantage. If the target discriminated out chatted at me a high tone then I know that it was not an iron target that was discriminated out. On the gold fields this can often mean a small nugget. I now nugget shoot with no discrimination at all in relic mode. Or when my ears get sick of that tone I use prospecting mode with the trigger at centre which discriminates by noise only without cutting any target out. I've found a tiny nugget at a depth of 5 inches or so gives such a slight sounding that the machine can't make up its mind if its a good target or not. I dig all these iffy signals.

Hi Gold Hunters, has any of you used the D2 coil to hunt gold in Arizona? I sold my 6x10 , now i have a trip to hunt gold, and no 6x10. I have the 9.5, the 5.3, the 8" Excelartor, and 5' Excelator. What coil do you think would be the best? I don't have time to get a 6x10 before i go. Thanks Dean

I grew up with White's and Garrett's for the most part.......
I got out of detecting for about 8 years while I scuba dove for treasure. then decided to jump back in with a Garrett GTi1500.
Excellent working detectors found lots and lots, then decided to the the GTi2500. A heavy beast but, it still found lots and lots.
Only problem I was not finding deep coins or any silver coins. decided to try White's again and bought a MXT. Got the hang of it real
quick but, it sure was a noisey thing and the tone after while, well let's say drove me nuts, wanted to wrap it around a tree.
I could only stand to hunt with it for about 4 hours...for that time I used the stock round coil. After reading a bunch of posts about 7 years ago,
I was convinced to try the 6x10DD and 4x6DD coils. It was like a different machine, it did quiet down considerably and I found twice as much
as I did with the Garretts. Even went back to where I thought I cleaned every thing out with the Garrett's and found a lot more stuff. I was sold
on the MXT, best detector I owned in a very long time. And it did start finding deeper coins as well as some silver ones. And found a 4 pound
cannonball at a War of 1812 site that was pounded by detectorists for 15 years.

Moved to Georgia with the MXT and one GTi1500. Both detectors did not handle the hot ground well, lost depth and couldn't ID correctly.
I sold the GTi1500 and went out and bought the 8x14" DD coil for the MXT. At the time there were a lot of good depth etc. claims. A mistake, it did not
improve the capabilty of the MXT at all. So I also sold the MXT. Then opted to try many other detectors while living in GA, the only ones at the time
that I found worked really well for "me" in that hot ground were the Minelabs Sovereigns and Musketeers.

I really liked the MXT, I know if I stayed up North, I would have never sold it.
I did get around the annoying tone the MXT makes when sounding a target. Had a pair of the VTR Ratphones with the variable tone adjustment
control. Too bad I sold those headphones too. Love to have another pair of them if someone has a used pair they would like to part with.

My brother would have to disagree with you as I would too. My brother owns an Exlporer SE and he would tell you personally that the MXT would hold it's own against the SE. He makes some nice deep finds as do I. I admit the MXT is noisy but I got use to that a long time ago. On the last several hunts we have been on he was complaining a few times about terrible EM interference and I picked up several nice keepers where he couldn't even hunt. There must be something wrong with your MXT.
