I guess we can all lose a little perspective sometimes.

I'll admit its happened to me a couple of times, when all I ever did was dig trash or was in a place that didn't produce a single beep. But those occasions are rare.

It is an adventure, never knowing for sure whats down there before you dig it up.

I gave up any thoughts of competing with other detectorists (unless its an organized hunt) early on.

For me, its just time outside getting some air and exercise which I very much after being cooped up in an office all week long.

I've been back in the hobby for abut 8 months now, and am still waiting for my first gold. That will be one heck of a personal banner moment for me, whenever it happens.

The only thing I don't care for on the forums is when people get into the "my machine is better than yours" or "your detector is inferior" rants. I wish some folks would stop and think before they do things like that. That machine might be just right for that user for a whole host of reasons. Detector snobs. :nono: Guess every hobby has some people like that.

many different people like different detectors. They all work well in the right hands..

I may be lucky to be a relative newbie (almost 2 yrs) since I haven't developed great expectations from my hunts.
I totally enjoy just getting out and hunting.
While I've been fortunate to have some "good" finds, some of the most interesting finds are maybe an item that takes me back 50 years or so.
Thanks for the post, Elton.

I was just thinking about this during a "dry spell" while we were out hunting the other during day. :)-----ONE of the things that makes this hobby so great (and fun) is that young & old can paricipate in it, handicapped people can participate in it, you can use as least expensive (or most expensive) equipment you like etc.------Also, comes to me that the "fun factor" can vary with an individual (as you age or your health changes).----What was fun for you (the way you hunted/participated) in this hobby ten yrs. ago may not be as much fun for you now.-----But you can ADJUST and STILL have fun (a blast) for your personal situation/preference now.------Does this make any sense to anyone?---I have a hard time putting into words my thoughts sometimes but I know what I'm TRYING to say (I think). :heh:----I just know "they" are not going to get my detectors until they pry them out of my cold dead hands----because I am STILL havin fun!!!!------Great post Elton!-------Del

Del....per usual your great thought has hit all on the head..Just about anyone can detect and enjoy the results, or not enjoy it on any given day. You nailed it as to being able to adjust for the moment. I think that makes it a great "FUN" Hobby for all... Another great thing is no fixed time factor involved 20 minutes, 20 hours what ever you can endure, and what ever time you can spare or devote is just fine. Another point as to the "fun' factor and not being so competitive with being the best, owning the most expensive ( unless you want it)....nor having to find the most or the oldest for it to still be fun. Good response Mr. Del..

thats what makes it fun for me.. You just never know what's next you will be digging.

I agree its all about the antisipation. Im fairly new to metal detecting (2 years) but Im not a pup. Im 64. I like the way it turns me back into a little kid at times. I can remember times in the past when I wouldn't pick up change laying on the ground when I saw it. Now Im working hard at digging it up, and its fun.
