Indian Head and Gold?

I dont use them. The old set I have dont work on the Vaq. They work on my White but I didnt like wearing them.

Im in the same area but spreading out. Trying to locate another hot spot. No luck but getting an occasional keeper. Heres an IH , my 1st merc a 1940, with the vaq a couple of wheaties and a memorial.

Spent another hour in the woods there today. Found my 1st ever V nickle. Its in horrible shape. i think the date is 1885. A 1942S war nickle and a 1913 D Lincoln.

I just noticed that a 1885 V is rare. I wish I hadnt cleaned it but then how would I know the date?

Its impossible to read the date. I scanned it and still cant make it out. It may be an 1895 , 1896, 1885, or 1886.

This spot Ive been hunting has really been a great spot to learn the vaquero. I have ran it supertuned to the max, found the gold that way , run it straight up, even turned the threshold to quiet , trying to separate sounds in all metal. This machine is easy to experiment with unlike my last unit that had so many features I was overwhelmed by it. My finds are way up. I find myself setting the threshold at about 2:eek:clock a lot now and the machine at min. discriminate. Im getting a lot more old nickles now , dimes and wheaties are exciting to hear, Indian heads have sounded more like zinc's for some reason.Cant wait to hit that silver quarter. I have dug up lots of bullets masquerading as nickles. They dont bother me to much. The aluminum foil on the other hand, I hate that stuff.

The v-nickle that I found was under several inches of leaves and a fallen limb. I heard a slight tone , kicked the debris out of the way swept the coil and their was that beautiful tone that I have come to love. The last war nickle completely fooled me. I was beside the creek that runs through there and thought for sure I had a surface pulltab . I bent over and hastily swept the top layer of soil away and out flew the 5 center.

Anyway, any finds I get in that area Im gonna post here instead of starting a new thread.

Spent two hours in the woods and stumbled on an old camping spot, I think. I covered it pretty good but there is still some more to be hunted. Theres a couple of dead trees in the way and Im gonna attempt to move them. It had a lot of good stuff in it. Pennies were1914 , 1917 , 1920 , 1934 , 1935s , 1939, and 1941. Have a buffalo nickle and my second Shield nickle in 2 days and 2nd ever, it dated 1901. A 1905 Barber dime. Theres a 1909 token. It reads INGLE INTRADE SYSTEM JUN. 1909. The reverse readsT.J.HAWKINS with a large 1 and four stars. I have no idea what it is. Theres also a little decorative copper piece that I have no clue what it is and what appears to be a fancy roach clip . I cant wait to get back out there.

Man that is excellent! My advise, don't quit on that spot. I'd go back and work a grid, if you already haven't, with tight overlaps. I'm sure you've heard it said a place was worked to death and there's nothing left, only to find you go to give a quick look and BAM! Awesome job, thanks for posting!

Ill be heading back tomorrow. I need to clean it up some and remove dead wood. Theres more there.

The dime has an O mint mark . Thats another 1st for me.

Went back this morning . This Vaquero is lucky on nickles. I found 3 V's today. That makes five in three days.Three days ago I had never found one. Got a Shield also, my first ever and my oldest coin to date. Plus three newer Jeffersons just made me a Buffalo shy of a nickle grand slam. The Shield is an 186? the V's are 1883, 1912 and ? Three wheat cents 1914D, 1915, 1918. Got a small sterling something, some sort of whistle and what looks like a toy cannon. I wish these nickles were not so corroded. So far all the finds in this thread were found within 100 yards of each other. Theres a lot more area to hunt.

WOOHOOO 1914 D is a rare one.Its not in bad condition. Its the green one in the pic.

Good advice, especially about the tight overlaps. Notice how even in AM non-ferrous targets will not give a signal until the edge of the coil is over the target, some non-ferrous targets, especially if deeper will not give a signal if 2/3 of the coil is over it. Ferrous targets can respond well before tha coil is over them.
If this is how non-ferrous targets respond in AM just think of how they respond in the disc mode which is noticibly less sensitive than AM mode. Tight overlaps will help bring out the deep non-ferrous.

You have made some sweet finds at that spot, keep up the good work and good luck.

Ive been gridding the best I can. When hunting in the woods with lots of saplings and vines, you need to go slow and overlap.I turnaround and hunt different directions also, trying to be thorough. I found one coin undernearth a sapling. I actually removed the tree to get it. Im not hurting the area at all by removing a small tree. They need to be thinned out.

A little info about the area. This is a city park. It is old and has been heavily hunted . A timber baron owned the land and donated it to the city after he logged it, over 100 years ago. The city just mows the easy parts and allowed the rest to grow. It is very hilly.Ive been searching wooded fingers of land that reach out into a valley and high flat spots along the creek in the valley. Searching the right topography is the key.Its possible to find coins haphazardly going through the woods but if you concentrate on areas that looks like people can rest and enjoy, picnic, camp... then you might hit a good spot. The finds come in bunches.

I havent found much my last couple of trips, but there is still some old stuff being dug. Im now working my way up the creek, looking for any flat spots that may have been a gathering point. When i find a good looking spot , I take my time to cover it the best I can. I have found that super tuning the unit by moving the threshold to the three oclock position really helps to bring out signals when hunting over a few inches of leaves and compost. Heres the latest finds.

A badge that appears to be made out of zinc and it has my hometown name on it. Thats all I can make out.Military button. Union made button.1943S war nickle and 1906 I.H. cent.

My latest finds along the creek. an old pocket knife, two 1919's and a 1945 lincoln.1897 V nickle, buffalo nickle and an interesting button. The face is gold colored , wrapped around a copper base with a stone in the middle. Its probably all fake but came out of the ground in remarkable condition. im going to have to get someone to check it out.The next spot up the creek looks real good. I hope to get there tomorrow if possible.

I dug every signal but 1 today , and did I get fooled a couple of times. The century old coins keep coming. On one of the indian heads I thought I had a rusty bottle cap . It was saying bedeepbedeepbedeep. I thought maybe it was a coin close to a rusty cap but no, just a hundred year old penny. From left to right starting at the top

.A decorative something . It has a crown at the top.A little pendulum type thing, Im guessing an earring. Piece of lead that Reads PHILADA ICE. An old silver plated earring that looks like a spinner from a bass lure.1903 Indian head, Mark Twain street car token [double cool] , 1906 indian head,1906 v 5 center, and a 1914 Lincoln. The 2nd photo shows the reverse of the Mark Twain token.

Wow, you are doing great, nice finds you continue to make there!
I have done really well picking out some old deep finds by scrubbing that coil right on the ground,
it really does add that much more depth when you really need it.

Sometimes I have to slow myself down and go back over areas because Im swinging to quickly and the coil gets to high. I went over one stretch today in full discriminate because I forgot to turn it back down. Had to resweep it.

Heres a running count of stuff found in this area. Not counting newer coins , buttons and other misc. stuff. I have found 48 old coins and not 1 quarter.

20 wheat cents including a 1914D
8 Indian head pennies
1 Shield nickle
7 V nickles
3 Buaffalo nickles
3 War nickles
1 Roosevelt dime
1 Mercury dime
2 Barber dimes
1 silver ring
1 gold earring
1 silver charm
1 trade token 1 cent
1 street car token.

Wow I sure hope I have your problems soon! My V should show up by next weekend and I can't wait to MD! I have a large area at my 100 year plus home that to my knowledge has never seen a coil so I am stoked about it!

Those are some Awesome finds! keep it up!
