Indian Head and Gold?

New member
Im stoked. Found an Indian Head penny and three gold colored pieces of jewelry in the woods today. The little button says stetson on it.I dont know if I have gold or not . Ill be cleaning them up soon to see what I have.

Good deal! Hurry up and clean them up so we take a closer look. What were your settings on your Vaquero and how deep were your finds?

The penny is 1900. Two pieces of jewelry are definitely not gold. The middle piece in this pic , I think is. I cant find any markings but it is very ornate and no corrosion anywhere. Ill have a jeweler check it out.

Ive been searching the woods around an old park for awhile now, hoping to find a hotspot. I found an area and thought to myself "This looks like a good place for teenagers to get it on" LOL. I hit the Indian Head shortly after. Then I started digging every signal. Id search in all metal until I hit something then switch to disc. Id turn the threshhold to about five oclock and max sensitivity until I could hear a slight but scratchy signal. The penny was about four inches down. The other pieces were two to seven inches down. I think the ring looking thing was the deep one but I dont know. Im planning on going back tomorrow afternoon. I only spent about thirty minutes at this spot.

Let's see, it was only a couple of months ago that you were concerned about the Vaquero not having a "meter". Now look at you. You're finding good stuff all the time.

The little pieces this thing unit hits are amazing. In the same hole I dug the Steson button I also dug a little clip that I think held the button on. I found the clip 1st, went back over in all metal and that tiny button was screaming.

After more careful cleaning that one piece is gold.Found a teeny 10k on it. Two gold pieces in a week. woohoo!!

Went back to the spot this morning. Found no jewelry. Did snag another I.H.cent 1901, wheat cent 1925 s, Jefferson nickle, 1964 Rosie and I think my first ever minnie ball. Gonna take a break and hit it again this afternoon.

More booty . I had to spread out some. Hunted in thicker undergrowth but it paid off. Found my 1st ever seated Liberty 1877CC. My 2nd 1912 barber of the year, a buffalo nickle, a 1942P nickle, 1942 penny, 1944S penny a memorial cent and a little telescope pendant. Today I found the trifecta. A Rosie, Barber, and a Seated liberty. Just needed a mercury for the Grand Slam.I tried hard for that Mercury but it was not to be.

You're wearing it out. Your Vaquero must be smoking hot from all those finds.:hot:

WOW! Awesome! Are you checking for key dates??
You got yourself a glory hole. Now I really want to get back to my spot before spring hits and it's impossible to hunt.
Get back out there and report back!

I hear ya man. This is perfect weather for this. Later on when everything turns green it will be difficult to hunt.

Those are some amazing finds. The vaquero is spoiling you. Congratulations. I love my Compadre and wish that I would have chosen Tesoro for my first detector, simple but powerful units. It is my favorite detector. If I had another Tesoro it would be my second favorite machine. Only the people who own Tesoros know how lucky they are to have found the best detectors at an incredibly affordable price. I am still looking for the old coins. From what I read on these forums it is all about research and persistence. You had better hunt that place out before spring as much as you can. Seems like you find a great place and the next thing you know you look over your shoulder and somebody else is detecting the same area. Awesome finds. Thanks for sharing. HH

Went back this afternoon. The finds are getting harder. Ive been hunting thicker brushy areas, sticking the coil in every little opening. Even getting on my hands and knees and running it up under cedar trees. Found my 2nd silver ring of the year, a 1907 indian head, Buffalo nickle, 57 Jefferson, two memorial cents , and a 1969 track medal that goes on a letterman jacket. What is a good way to get the dirt off a penny like this?

I think thats it folks. Went back this morning moved dead wood, kicked piles of leaves and came up empty. Time to move on.

Terrific finds, glad the vaquero is doing so well for you.

I went back today with a rake and a saw. Cleared a lot of debris out of the way. Spent more time cleaning than hunting. Found a 1905 indian head cent and a junk ring. Its time to try and find another spot.

I am definitely going to be getting a Vaquero! Are you guys using headphones with your Vaqueros?
