I Know Dogs Aren't People But My Best Friend Could Use A Few Prayers Right Now

My husky Sky has been healthy as a horse for her ten years so far of life. Never a problem with her, other than her getting a little mopey when she's in heat. Anyway, for the last 4 or 5 days we could tell she was in heat again and she was a little under the weather. About 3 days ago she threw up once but didn't seem too sick or anything. Then yesterday she seemed better and her nose was moist and cold finally like it should be. I woke up this morning to find she had threw up about 8 times in the house, and then I was really concerned when I found her in the basement as she never goes down there. She could hardly hold her head up and keep her eyes open. I found a animal clinic that opens at 8AM on Sundays and had to carry her to the car she was so weak.

The vet came back about an hour later and said the x-rays were clear of cancer, but that she was suffering from kidney failure. He said probably from old age. I protested and said she's only ten, because I know of huskys that are 15 or 16 years old and she seems like she's in her prime. He said there is a possibility she is suffering from a bacterial or virus infection that is shutting her kidneys down, but that it would take 2 or 3 days in the hospital and over a $1000 to find things out. I said if there is a possibility of it being something curable other than old age then it's worth trying. So he said he'll put her on an IV because she's dehyrdated, give her antibiotic shots for any virus or bacterial infection, and run some blood tests to see whats going on. Funny, but on the way there I heard on the radio about a bacterial infection dogs can get from animal urine. Usually from raccoons, but it can come from other animals. I've been seeing 3 rabbits in my yard a lot over the past month so maybe it's that? He said he'd screen for that too.

My biggest hope is that she's got some kind of bacterial bladder infection because I've heard female dogs that aren't fixed can get that when in heat pretty often, and I know urine infections can make a human pretty out of it and such too, so maybe it's just something simple like that? I'm just hoping it's some form of virus or bacterial disease as that should be fixable with antibiotics and so her kidneys should be just fine after that. I know my grandmother has had several kidney failures cause by an infection and she has sprung back every time they've treated her for that and her kidneys became fine again.

Anyway, I know dog's aren't people but she's my best friend. Never have I met such a gentle and loving dog, and never have I met a dog that had so much to say. She doesn't howl like most huskys, but rather talks in her own special way and hardly ever barks. Smartest dog I've ever met too. If she doesn't make it I just wish I would have taken videos of her talking up a storm, because that's what I'm going to miss the most about her if she doesn't pull through.

So if you have a spare moment and your saying a prayer anyway, please put a word in for the most special creature I've ever met, human or not.

sorry you are going thru what you are going thru......our yellow lab-12 yr old female- had simular symptoms about 3 months ago...turned out to be infection in her female parts.....we got her there late but not too late as she was very infected inside....they did emergency historectomy .....she recovered fine, which to tell you the truth i was not really expecting as sick as she was..$1300 later she is a little bit slower but she is ok... i know its tough ....but dont give up hope and know that either way youv done all that you could....

Boy. Dogs just need to be fed and taken care of and they'll be loyal all their lives.

i know how you feel too, our house dog of 7 years , a rat terrier, was attacked by a big black lab looking dog last week in our yard! thought for shure she'd die. almost did too. over a week later and a couple hundred dollars later , she's getting better slowly. the cops wouldn't do anything, said they knew whos dog it was, but that he works for the city, and they weren't going to get involved. so i'm sure the guy who owns the dog will probably get out of paying for the bill. no justice!. but that's ok. i no longer expect justice here, i will get revenge the next time i see that dog though!:veryangry:

I want to thank you all for the prayers and support. I called the vet this morning and she passed away in the middle of the night. She was such a healthy dog and seemed to me to be in her prime. That's why this was such a shock. I only wish we would have taken her to the vet earlier this week and maybe she would have had a chance. It's just that we thought she was just a bit under the weather due to being in heat again.

There is a dog park I've taken her to in the past and a lady who runs a husky shelter would show up with about 20 of them. I am already missing her roaming around the house, so I think...In a few days...I might pay that lady a vist and rescue one of those huskys. The house just feels too empty. I know you can't replace a dog with another, but I think if I do that I'm going to try to find the same breed which I think is called long haired. They are smaller huskies, or at least she was, and beautiful in that they look like they have border collie in them. At the very least I want to try to find another husky that likes to talk as much as she did.

Once again, thank you all for the support. The only thing I might add is that if you love your dog and it just looks a bit under the weather or out of it, do yourself a favor and take it to the vet that day. Look into it's eyes, as they will tell you all you need to know about how well it's feeling. I *knew* a few days ago something just didn't look right when I looked at her eyes, and in the back of my head I thought there might be something else going on rather than being in heat. I just wish I would have listened to my gut instinct and acted on that. Maybe things would be different if I did. You'll *know* by the look she is giving you. If something doesn't feel right about that look then act on it.

Maybe one day, if I play my cards right, I'll be able to play with Sky again and listen to all she has to talk about in her own special way. She just loved to talk.

OMG! Critter I am so sorry to hear about Sky. Just remember the good times and the great life you provided for her. I know how much I love my canine companion and I know I'll cry like a baby when she leaves me. Your Sky is no longer sick or in pain- she is free. Be strong. Matt

Thanks. Yes, I guess she really didn't suffer long so that's a good thing. The night before we took her to the vet she was feeling better and playing with a new squeaky toy we bought her. We thought the squeaky toy would cheer her up. That's why it's such a shock. I would never have expected that the next morning I'd find her on death's door in the basement.

My pet name for her was Wolf Pup. When she was feeling ornery she'd flop her head sideways onto the ground and show me her teeth. Never has she ever brought blood, even when she was p*ssed because I was trying to take something away from her. Sure, some times she'd bite when I probably deserved it anyway...But only hard enough to tell me she meant business, and again it was probably always deserved because I was pestering her a little too much.

Sometimes when she refused to eat something I'd tell her that she's pretty uppity for somebody who likes to eat ants. I sure am going to miss that dog, or I should say that soul...

Thanks again for the kind words.

I don't have a picture of her to post, but I did some searching on the net and it turns out long haired huskies are also called "wooly" huskies. Here's a picture of a dog that looks a lot like her, but this dog looks bigger than her. She only weighed either 45 or 54 pounds. I forget which, but it's one of the two.

So sorry for your loss critter. In ways, dogs are better than people. My buddy will be 10 next month and still acts like a puppy. He's 110 lbs so I know every day with him is a gift.

Thanks. I should say that I am a hunter and have harvested my share of animals over the years. However, this dog touched my soul in a way I can't even begin to describe to people. There is a big difference between hunting for food and not loving animals. I guess PETA and others just can't see that difference, but I can understand that people do have problems with understanding that.

You have my deepest sympathy for your profound loss Sir !!

Critterhunter,

Dog people understand.

There is an old black and white movie set in the rural south, I wish I could remember its title. The part of the movie I remember most is the trial of and old man for murder. Seems he murdered a man for killing his dog. When he was on the witness stand, he explained why the dog meant so much to him and why its needless killing enraged him so much as to commit the murder. I do remember it was very touching.. When you see the cruelty some endure and how so many suffer, you should be proud you gave your dog such a good life.

These thugs that fight pit bulls are more inhuman than the dogs they kill for sport. I saw one report where the little creeps where picking up strays off the street and thowing the poor things in with their pit bulls for practice killing.

Makes me think the old man in the movie has it right!

So sorry to hear about your dog. I've seen some of the biggest, strongest, toughest guys I ever knew just breakdown and cry like a child when they lost their dog. They have a way of carving out a big chunk of your heart all for themselves. Good luck in getting a replacement. I went the same route and got another one right away.

I'm sorry to hear of your loss Critter - my wife and I have said goodbye to 3 dogs and 2 cats in the last 25 years and it seems to get harder and harder. Some people can't get a new "best friend" that soon after a loss while for others, it's the absolute best thing you can do. I'm sure your heart will tell you what's best.

In your original post you said something to the effect that "I know dogs aren't people, but ..." - you're right, dogs aren't people, in many cases they are BETTER than alot of people! I'm sure when you do decide to bring a new "buddy" into your house (and I applaud you for looking at a rescue animal!!), he/she will be a very fortunate dog to have such a great owner.

Paul

Real sorry for your loss Critter. It brings tears to my eyes because I remember losing Freckle, a short hair Spaniel, a few years ago. She was about 13. May have been snakebite. Found her in a canyon about half a mile from the house where she had stopped to rest under some small trees with her head facing home. Buried her on Valentine's day, 2007. For days after that, every time I heard a love song I would think of her. But she died doing what she loved and had a life any dog could envy. I don't think you can kill a spirit like that and I still call her sometime. Sometimes a young coyote will come hang out near the house and I'm thinking it would be just like her to be enjoying a new life chasing around in this desert. I believe I will see her again.

Critter sorry for your lose i know what it is like i raised dogs since i was a kid and still do . Time heals . Jim
