How Many Half Dollars Have You Found ?

Good grief - 250 Half's - that's truly amazing !!! :clapping:

I've been detecting since 1971. 24 years old then, always worked night shifts, and countless 6 to 8 hour days of hunting all week long. Oh my, all the untouched ground back then. And even into the mid 1980s. Things were much different then. I used to get mad if I didn't find 15 silver coins and at least 1 ring a day. Keep in mind there were no discriminators on the detectors then and the gold ring ratio finds compared to nowdays gold rings finds was HUGE. Quantity of finds per day? It's been so long ago but my best 3 days ever (that I DO remember)...Miller Park in Omaha, NE 650+ coins Compass 77b. North High School in Omaha, NE 600+ coins and 4 class rings Garrett ADS 2 (or mybe it was a an ADS 3). Brownell Talbot Catholic School 500+ coins White's Goldmaster 66TR.

So as far as half dollars go: 250 or so. 3 Seateds that I remember. I'd guess maybe 50 or so Barbers. Walkers/Franklins/Kennedys make up the rest.

Keep in mind, like I said, 40 years ago things were much different.

id like to update that to "7/3/2011, a 1941 walker":clapping:

i cant beleive it!

Like NGE I have sold a lot of mine over the years also. I had saved all my silver and in March of 1980 when silver went crazy I told my wife when it hits $20oz I was cashing in. It did. One morning it was $21oz. I packed it all up (no... not the rare ones!) along with two coathangers full of junk gold rings and a couple coffee cans full of silver rings/medals/etc. and headed for Sol's Jewelry and Loan in Omaha. I got there at 7AM and couldn't believe it... the line to sell stuff was two blocks long! To make a long story short I got a new detector, a Chevy Blazer, and my wife got a new Honda Civic out of that deal! The fact is there were a lot of folks in the 70s making a living with metal detectors in the US. Not to mention the gold they were finding with detectors in Austrailia... guys were geting rich there!

I've been at it a year now and in the past four months I've got two halves- a '56 and a '58 franklin.

About 3 clad halves. Oddly enough, the only silver half I've found in 23 years of detecting was a 1877-s seated. Found it the same day as my first and only seated quarter, an1875.

Not that many and I've been detecting since 92' , 3 Walkers , 5 Franklins and 1- 64'Kennedy . Although I've found many clad Kennedy's (at the least a dozen) I've never found a 40%er. I just clean the clad Kennedy's and spend them ( just like I do the newer dollar coins ) .

Aw shucks guys, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have been so greedy in the 60's and 70's. On one day in 1985 one of my hunting friends and I got 22 halves in an area in a park called Rouge Park in detroit, the area was called " Scout Hollow" cubs and Boy scouts camped there from the 40's through the late 60's. It still is loaded with silver, But because of its out of the way location in the park, you would need someone with a sawed off to stand guard, whilst you hunted.......NGE

I have found 6 in my 5 or so years of hunting.

2 Walkers 1918S, 1940
2 Franklins 1953 (first ever half) 1960
2 Kennedy 1973, 1982

3 of my halves were found in the same area this spring over three months (1940, 1960, 1973) with the two silver found a week apart.

Finding a half always makes my smile REALLY big!

24 total, three silvers.
Silvers are 1876-CC, 1899-O and 1971.
I scratched (perhaps I should use the term "engraved") the reverse of the Barber while digging it up. Somewhat ironically, the Seated Liberty and Barber were both found within the last two months and neither were more than 5" deep.

34 in 40+ years and not a single one older than a walker (1916-1947).

When i found and read this thread I was somewhat embarrassed to say...none. But amazingly just a couple of hours after reading this thread BAM...I found my first half...a 1898 Barber half in nice condition! More info and pics in Today's Finds...

25 years worth.....not included below are approx. 8-10 clad kens (?)

1 seated (1853)
6 walkers
2 bens
2 barbers
2 kens

I average 6-7 per year and most are walkers. Been hunting 9 years now, I can go count em, but I'd guess around 50+ I dont count clad ones, only silver

So far this year I have found 21. 1 Barber, 18 Walkers and 2 Franklin. I could never count all the ones I have found on land and underwater

I have a total of 8
5 walkers { found 2 1943 walkers in the same hole at a closed up golf course in 2012)
3 Kens

I have found 3 slivers ones. 1822 half, 1909 half, and 1941 half.
