How Many Half Dollars Have You Found ?

Started detecting in June 2009 so I am two years in, did not find any with my Ace 250 but with the E-Trac I have found two both of them silver. The first comes with a little story. I took a friend to a old home site and I did ok with a Merc and a Rosey then don't you know he found a Walker. Now he was glad to find it but not super excited as he has found quite a few silver halves in his many years of detecting I think I was more excited to see it as that was the first half I had ever saw dug. I told him "I can't wait to find one of those they are such beautiful coins". Six days later I found one a 1941 Walker that was August 2010, two months later I found a 1912-D Barber. My wife has been detecting for about 8 months and she just found a 1954 Franklin....she was beside herself with that one.

It always has made me wonder when I found a silver half... especially real old ones... the circumstances of that person losing it. A half dollar nowdays is chump change but back in the day it could have been a days pay. And if that were true that person had to be sick about it!

And to go a step further finding silver dollars. Whenever I found one I'd just set right where I found it and wonder how someone could lose something so big. And how they must have been upset losing it.

ill never for get the moment of finding my first one with my Dad, it was 25 years ago, it was a walker, (43?) and i can still see the silver rim poking from the edge of the dirt clump that it was in. it was only about 2" deep. we kept taking turns looking at it as we continued detecting...it was great, a snapshot, never to be forgotten moment.

You never forget the first one, well to tell you the truth I haven't found many so I remember them all :|. My first was a 1942 walker in Riverside Calif. Got invited to detect an empty lot that some forum members had been detecting for awhile. I almost left when I got there and saw that the lot was bone dry and the dirt was like concrete. The place was loaded with trash. Kept digging baby jar lids and I had to chip away the dirt to get at them. After getting nothing for about an hour I was getting ready to go to a nearby park when I got a good hit. Came in like the other baby jar lids I had dug. Got down about 4 inches and broke loose a chunk of dirt that flipped out of the hole along with the walker. Couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it. You should have seen the look on the other two guys faces when they came over to look. They couldn't believe that I found a walker. It was almost black in color. Like you and your dad I kept taking it out of my pocket to look at it through out the rest of the day. That was my first lot dig and from that day on I never pass up a chance to dig a lot. :detecting: it was super nice of Thomas (belongs to the Riverside club) and Mike to invite a stranger out to one of there spots. They found a ton of oldies on that lot. Thomas and Mike if you're out there thanks again :super: this post brought back some good memories!

Wow! A seated half. I'm still looking for my 1st seated anything :detecting: . I'd have a stroke if I found a seated half. Bet that made your day!

One Kennedy.... you guys already found all the others.

I've been detecting since 1971. 24 years old then, always worked night shifts, and countless 6 to 8 hour days of hunting all week long. Oh my, all the untouched ground back then. And even into the mid 1980s. Things were much different then. I used to get mad if I didn't find 15 silver coins and at least 1 ring a day. Keep in mind there were no discriminators on the detectors then and the gold ring ratio finds compared to nowdays gold rings finds was HUGE. Quantity of finds per day? It's been so long ago but my best 3 days ever (that I DO remember)...Miller Park in Omaha, NE 650+ coins Compass 77b. North High School in Omaha, NE 600+ coins and 4 class rings Garrett ADS 2 (or mybe it was a an ADS 3). Brownell Talbot Catholic School 500+ coins White's Goldmaster 66TR.
Forgot to mention, another 4 Clad Kennedy halfs but I don't remember how many I found and how many the husband found.
I guess if it isn't silver,we just don't keep track as well.

So as far as half dollars go: 250 or so. 3 Seateds that I remember. I'd guess maybe 50 or so Barbers. Walkers/Franklins/Kennedys make up the rest.

Keep in mind, like I said, 40 years ago things were much different.

I found a clad half last year. So far this year I've found a 1900 Barber and 1918 and 1945 Walkers. I'm pretty happy with them since this is only my second year detecting.

I started hunting in the early 60's. If I had to guess, I'd say about 500! 5 years ago I got over 150 at one site, all silver also got about 100 silver dollars, 200 silver dimes, over 200 silver quarters all at same site about 2 weeks hunting.........NGE

I would love to see a group shot of some of your silver, is that a possibility?

Me too. The kind of work I used to do, (auto body repair) was so unpredictable, that when the paychecks were small, I would sell my gold and silver to pay bills or buy hunting equipment. The bulk of my silver was found at a construction site. A friend of mine told me about the site 2 weeks after his mother in law told him what the bulldozer had unearthed. I have that printed on paper somewhere, I had posted the story on http://www. Greatlakesmetaldetecting.com several years ago. Their site crashed and lost most previous posts. The person I sold all the silver to, I think she still has it all, at least that's what she told me, all the silver I and my friend had dug in those two weeks had rust on them. Because I was never a rich man, I made my hobby pay for itself! I sold my finds to pay my way through life. I still do. I know this makes me look like I am lying about what I have found through the years. But remember, I started hunting with a Radio Shack BFO, and Fisher (FRL) Machines. And coming home with less than 15 to 20 pieces of silver per day WAS a bad day. I will look for what I printed from the aforementioned detecting site, when I find it, I will scan it and put it on here. I know people that were successful business people that have nevr gotten rid of anything they have ever found, believe me, it is a very impressive sight to see, have you ever seen over 500 gold rings at one time, besides at a smelter's business? I have. They don't need to cash in their finds. I have known people that were so eccentric with their finds, that they let their homes go into foreclosure instead of selling their stuff to stay afloat. So I am sorry about not having pictures of all my silver and gold, there are smaller bunches posted on several other sites all over the net, but those are more recent finds...say within the past 20 years. I am NOT accusing you of calling me a fibber! I have great respedt for MOST of the people on this forum, and you are one of them:beers: I have many, many great stories ,But they are slowly fading away, like my memory. Did you know that early BFO's only had a depth average of ony 2 to 4 inches? They had no dedicated discriminators? Were large and bulky? I started hunting when military mine detectors were what people were using for beach machines:yikes:............NGE

LOL...I never meant I didn't believe you at all. I just LOVE pictures of huge piles of dug coins, especially SILVER. I was just thinking how impressive it would look! I believe you, I have no reason to NOT believe you.

I have had people in the past doubt that I find what I do, that is one reason I started posting pictures of my coins still dirty. I cannot even fathom the thought of posting a single coin I did not dig!....... and honestly if someone wants to doubt you or I, then let them! Doesn't affect my finds total one bit :clapping:
