I was contacted via e-mail by a forum member that has had an experience that any detectorist's dreams are made of. This member whom we'll call "Mr. X" wishes to remain anonymous for security reasons, but also wanted to share this amazing find with fellow forum members. I agreed to post it to conserve his anonymity, yet allow other members of the forum to drool on their keyboards.:)

Mr. X was contacted by a private party to search for a cache they had reason to believe was buried on their property. Part of the agreement was that Mr. X would not take any compensation, and any finds would be turned over to the land owner. Mr. X was allowed to take some photos, but that was the extent of his reward except for reuniting the owner with the cache.

As it turned out there was not ONE cache, but SIX separate caches. And as Mr. X had developed a plan of attack beforehand, his meticulous execution of it using an X-Terra delivered the goods you see before you. I will describe photo number one of the two pictures that you see, there are 1,000...... that's right ONE THOUSAND Walking Liberty Halves from one of the caches!!!!!!!!!! With Silver at $15USD/Oz and each Half weighing 1/3 Oz, that's $5000USD in scrap value alone, to say nothing of the numismatic value. Photo two, take a breath, a portion of the 200 Morgans found!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Excuse me, I have to go get some air before I type any more.

Mr. X deserves a hearty congratulations for not only the find, but his ethical behavior in turning over this incredible find to the land owner. Though yours truly thinks the land owner should have forked over a little sumthin' to Mr. X."

Damn, you didn't say anything about cherry pits!!!!! Holy moley. They could at least given him something. Reminds me. A friend of my brother-in-law bought an old mustang from an estate sale in Wyoming. During the sale they spotted two large sand bags in the trunk. The seller said his grandpa used them for traction in the winter time. Later on the buyer was going to remove the sand bags and found they were bought full of silver dollars!! He called the grandson and he came over and took them and gave a reward of, "zero" to the buyer. At least your friend had an agreement. What a feeling it must be to find something like that. Good for him.

All I can say is WOW. I do believe that Mr. X should of been rewarded some how...Like a 1/3rd

I had to look at that again. Man oh man.

If the owner did not compensate Mr X, that is just plain unbelievable..........

"Mr. X was allowed to take some photos, but that was the extent of his reward except"...........are you serious???

This land owner simply cannot go without giving him something, that is just NOT RIGHT, w/o the help, work, and time Mr X gave him the owner would NOT have this thousands of dollars of silver he now has in his possession.

I cannot believe anyone would be so selfish, that is really bad karma for him in my opinion. Hopefully the owner comes to his senses and realizes how selfish he is being and gives Mr X something for his time, I would feel that 10% would be MORE than fair for both parties

Mr. X DID agree to hunt without compensation but the homeowner should have been gracious enough to force Mr. X to take a small reward anyway. How about a pick from the litter...has to be a key date in there somewhere.

Wow that would have given me a heart attack for sure the land owner should give Mr,X some kind of reward awesome. Howard

My Oh My Oh My Oh My....Wonder how the property owner shaves....I would have a hard time looking in mirror myself...:sadwalk:

I just wonder why no compensation from the Land owner. But hey thats between them..It's a wonderful find............

That is an awesome find! The fact that the landowner did not give X man anythinf is just not right in my book?

Well I will have to wipe my keyboard off now. Too much drool, Beale.

Goes4ever and TomB have summed it up pretty well. I dont know what actual costs Mr. X might have incurred, but surely, as a human being, his time, effort and gracious intent are worth something.

I don't think I could have excepted those terms. What did the guy think, it would take him 10 minutes to find everything? Well, that was his desision and he accepted it, it just shows how big of a heart he has. But seriously, not even 1?

Either way, that's definitely the find of a lifetime.:clapping:

JMHO, but I don't see any important difference in this deal than doing a search for any other kind of lost or mislaid personal property --- provided the present owner is the one who mislaid it or is the reasonable heir thereof. Anyone else can do their own damn searching or cut a deal. Mr. X was likely doing his thing on behalf of a relative or friend. Most of us would gladly hunt for a friend's lost ring worth a few bucks or several thousand. He done good, whatever. I wish I was the guy who bought the car with the 'sandbags' in it, though ... ALL MINE!!

Agreement or not, the homeowner should compensate "Mr.X". If for nothing else, his time. Pictures to me just don't cut it considering the "unexpected" additional finds. JMHO

Amazing find! I have two Silver Morgan Dollars like those in the pictures and they are a large and beautiful silver coin...much bigger than those in circulation today. Even a worn coin from this family often sells for in excess of $45 apiece. With these coins in such beautiful condition, some may be worth several hundred dollars each - or more. I've even seen some individual coins sell for over $2000 each!

I too feel that the "owner" wouldn't have found a thing without the assistance of a good detector. I was surprised to see that the finder was given no finder's fee... or even a token coin. Perhaps he should have arranged something in advance. Even in Australia, there's usually some arrangement to compensate the use of a detectorist to find a lost cache.

Nice find though! Very nice indeed. Doesn't get much better than this. Unless they were gold coins.
