Got a question about digging Pennie’s.

TRIPLE-SSS

Well-known member
Hi everyone, I was just thinking about all the Pennie’s that I dig every time I go out detecting. The majority of all my finds are Pennie’s. It takes me over an hour to dig about 25 Pennie’s versus about a minute to dig up a quarter. I’m thinking about passing up all the Penny VDI #s 40-42 and just focus on nickels, dimes and quarters for coins only. I know that I might miss some jewelry by doing this but I’m just tired of all the Pennie’s and allot of them are not spendable anyways. Just curious if it would be a good idea. Pull tabs are bad enough, but Pennie’s are just as bad. Those Pennie’s are kicking my butt.

I was just curious if anybody on the forum has tried that. I’m thinking that would give me more time for those silver coins instead of the dreadful copper or zinc pins that have no real value.
Thanks
P.S. if I was 20 years younger would not mind at all, in my 70’s and those Pennie’s are just taking too much out of me.😬

I will often skip Zincs if there is no potential for IHPs. I won't skip Cu Cents. They hit too close to a Dime.

I've done that on sites where there were just to many coppers. Missing the silver.
Depending on the machine you can do that to an extent.
On my Tesoros. You can turn disc to the max and only hit silver. Though pure copper will still come thru loud and clear.
The Manticore you should be able to tune out zinc cents. Though I want those old Wheaties, Indian heads and large cents.

I'm almost 80. I know what you mean about pennies. At our local soccer fields that I hunt, the other day, I dug a 41 on my legend, that I had passed up more then once because I figured it was just another zink penny. this time I dug it. It turned out to be a nice silver religious peace. so you never know.

Nice save. I hate the zincons too.
Though I'll Always dig the coppers.

I dig up a lot of Pennie’s as well and thought about doing the same thing until I thought I had hunted out an area and got 6 wheat Pennie’s dated from 1919 with the newest dated 1936 and all where in nice condition I guess my point is you never know and for me the exercise does me good even though I have already filled one jar full of pennies and on my second jar the jar I have with coin that are of value is almost half full

Hi, I hope I’m detecting at 80, very good point on the Pennie’s. About 15 years ago, I was digging all the pull tab signals . After digging about 30-40 pull tabs, I was going to give up and the very last signal turned out to be a gold ring with 2.5 carat diamond.

Hi. Believe me, I have to pick an choose targets I dig more closely these days. Boy if I found a ring like that, I would try to keep digging pull tabs until I couldn't dig anymore. Yes getting up an down is hard after about an hour or two. But ill keep going till I cant. H.H.

I only dig zinc readings on 1-2 old sites. If your hunting is starting to feel like work and you're enjoying it less then don't dig those zincs.

Depending on your machine. On my Deus 1, I can tell the the difference btwn zinc & copper. The difference btwn copper and a dime can be a crap shoot.
It doesnt happen too often but I recall ALMOST NOT digging a zinc on a beach. Good thing I did, it was a 22K wedding ring !!!! But I usually dig everything on the beach.
Land, thats another the story. You really need to know your machine and the numbers it spits out for each coin or pull tab. Last winter I was hunting a park and not finding too much.
It was recently redone. I got a very repeatable 70 which which is an unusual number on my Deus 1. Turned out to be a very nice 14k ring with nice size diamonds and rubies.
Moral of the story, know your machine. Then u can pick & choose

I have two four gallon containers. both over half full of pennies. one, mostly ones I'm going to throw away because they or to crusty. the others or spendable. many of the clean pennies found while water hunting.

Just finishing up cleaning 2 years worth of good pennies. I have 6 sand pails full of 'too crusty' beach pennies Im going to try and send to the mint as 'mutilated coins'

I usually pass up Zincs myself but I dig the Memorials. One day the Memorials may be worth something, now that they are not going to make more Pennies. On sites that I have hunted a few times, I will sometimes go back and dig the Zincs. I always get surprises.
