I was living....er....existing mainly in SO Cal. doing whatever I could to make a buck and survive. Working two, sometimes three low paying jobs, you know the drill. My sister wrote me to let me know she had delivered a bouncing baby boy, my first nephew. I just had to share in that so I scraped enough money for a standby ticket out of LAX to Boston figuring I could hitch a ride home as it was only three hours away. Well, I got off the plane in Boston to total darkness, forgetting how quick it gets dark in the North East after the first of October. I grabbed a quick bite then took stock om my funds and realized I was a few bucks short of a bus ticket all the way. I went to the clerk and asked how far I could get on what I had and was told Keene NH. Man, I was in heaven! That got me two hours closer on a rainy October night. I arrived there at O'dark thirty and started walking towards Vermont, some 24 miles away. Of course there was NO traffic at that hour. By mornings light, I managed a ride to the Interstate and got a lift in a truck going well past my house.

I walked in to my dad's store totally unannounced and almost gave my mother a heart attack as I had not been home for two years. After the usual hugs and tears, she told me to head upstairs to get something to eat and to see my other sister who was there planning her upcoming wedding. I stepped into the living room and went through another round of family reacquainting. I noticed a young lady sitting at mom's piano who was putting the music together for my sister's wedding. I introduced myself and went about my business. My sister later encouraged me to escort her friend Debbie to the wedding which I promptly did. We dated after that and in April, on her birthday, I asked her to be my wife. Now, I gotta tell ya, that was probably the second most smart thing I have ever done, the smartest was to come later. She accepted and we were married on August 26th, 1973.

We had the usual ups and downs as any new couple have but we managed and in December 76' She presented me with our daughter. In July of 79 our son arrived. Our daughter is now married with two lovely daughters of her own and our son is engaged to a wonderful young lady he met while in college. I would not be writing this were it not for the fact that Debbie and I are headed to Hawaii this month to celebrate Thanksgiving with them. We are hoping to spend some quality time with them before Ryan is re-deployed. He's not sure where yet nor when, only that it'll be sooner than any of us expected.

So that's how I met the love of my life, raised a family with her and have had her friendship for 32 years. By the way, the smartest thing I ever did was to accept Jesus as my Lord and Savior with her encouragement. I am blessed by her presence in my life!

I told her that there was "no way" that I would EVER marry again. She just smiled at me and went back to work.

Less than a year later we married. A smile is so powerful!
